There really is no explaination in any of the games that I'm aware of. It's just a simple game feature that allows you to play the campaign with your friends. I don't think it's intended to fit in with the single player campaign story.

The basic explanation is:

It's a game. Not everything has to make sense. It would have taken far too long for Bungie to come up with backstory for there being 2 Spartans.

The way I see it, we both lost anyway.

Well...I guess it could have been Linda from the novels. Although she was technically cryo frozen for the entire Halo encounter.

Chill out - dude, you really need to

Bring back Final Run!

yea they brought the Arbiter in to change that in Halo 2 but you couldn't have someone running around as an Elite in the first edition

Why do people in ship mutinies always ask for "better treatment"? I'd ask for a pinball machine, because with all that rocking back and forth, you'd get a lot of free games.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

I like to think of it as, one spartan is real and one is imaginary, but each spartan thinks they are real.
