Here is a ranking system:
There are 3 parts to the rank:
-Your symbol
-Your current rank.
-Your true skill.
Your symbol is on Bungie.net. It is just your highest level. It cannot go down. So technically, everyone can be a general if they play.
Your current rank is just like you're symbol, but it goes up and down, based on your performance. It does not reflect upon your actual skill.
Then there is your true skill. This is only visible by you. Nobody else can see it.
EXP:
In a game, you can earn either negative, or positive EXP. How much you earn is determined by your K/D. This affects your current rank, and your symbol, however the symbol either goes up, or stays where it is:
The following explains what your K/D earns in terms EXP:
Any lower = -5 EXP
-6 to -10 Kills = -1 EXP
-1 to -5 Kills = 0 EXP
0-Same amount of kills and deaths = 1 EXP.
+1 to +5 Kills = 5 EXP
+6 to +10 Kills = 10 EXP
+11 to +20 Kills = 20 EXP
Any higher = 50 EXP
I am not going to go into detail about how much EXP you need to get this rank, but I think that this is a good starting point.
True skill:
True skill is determined by several factors, all of which are only visible to you, unless you wish to display it on your account:
-Accuracy
-Kill time (This factors in accuracy, from the time your first shot lands on your target, a timer determines how long it takes you to kill the player. It works kind of like how the game can tell whether you got a kill with the sword.)
-Over all K/D
-Current rank
All these factors affect your true skill. When searching for a match, the game searches for a maximum difference of 5 in true skill. When searching with a party, the game does one of two things:
The first thing is search for another party of similar size with players that have within 5 true skill.
It that fails, the game finds the average true skill, and the same 5 factor applies:
Say in your party there are 5 players with the following true skills:
40
20
35
39
18
You add them all up you get 152, divide it by 5, you get 30.4. That rounds to a true skill of 30. So your party will play against players with a true skill ranging from 25 to 35.
