a halo movie would flop big time for 2 reasons:
1. those not in the know wouldnt have a clue about the rich and detailed back story which sucked us all in, and a lot of the finer more subtle story arcs would be completly lost on them. After all there are three books worth of information, not to mention 2 games, and its only the most hardcore fans who went out of their way to get hold of the literature.
2. story telling aside, what forced us to love halo was the immersion, the feeling that you were almost there, despite the whole space opera glitz, it was one of the most convincing game universes, and thus the most realistic. taking into account your involvement of actually being there, a movie will distance the audience from that participation, so vital to making us love the game, and would leave us with someone elses vision of what the experience should be, not the specially tailored, customised personal ride that game was always meant to be.
this weighs heavily on my heart as i'd love to see a halo movie that does the game justice. its just that my ideal movie would be different to dave's, dave's different to john's, john's different to bill's and so forth.
