I feel like Squad Based Combat is something that's been all but forgotten in video games and it was simply a phenomenal concept when implemented correctly. To start I'd like to point to Star Wars: Republic Commando. While the game's plot center and ilk are questionable (it has to fit into Lucas' universe, so we won't get into criticizing that), it did have one feature that set it apart from other Xbox shooters; it's squadbased features. You had a button that threw you into a tactical mode where you could tell your teammates what cover to go behind, where to shoot, etc. You could tell them to focus their fire on one enemy. You had different squad formations for opening doors, and you could either hack the door open or simply blow it with a grenade.

All of these things seem like they'd fit well into a Halo game. Tell your squad to focus fire on the Hunter pair? Sounds good. Decide between hacking through a covenant door and simply blowing it open? I like choices, check that one off. Tactical Control of where your squadmates are? Saddle me up Sally, this sounds like a game.

It fits even moreso with the setting of the game. We know that all the SPARTAN's went groundside save 3 at the battle of reach, and we know that the pelican taking them down failed mid-air and they were all forced to jump out and freefall to the ground. From there on we know what happens to a fair bit of the spartans, including that they're put into squads with different objectives. Granted, this game doesn't seem to have anything to do with Fred and ilk yet, but it's the first opportunity we have for a game where the Spartan's are operating in teams, and it seems like it'd be a wasted opportunity to implement squad controls that could take the game from great to excellent.

So...share your thoughts?

I can definitely see the potential in having a squad based Halo game. It would fit in canonically and would be a welcome addition to the Halo universe (in my opinion).

Exactly, and that kind of gameplay would fit perfectly with doing the multiplayer campaign route as well. If each guy in your squad had an assigned job, then when you're doing co-op everyone could pick a job and suddenly you have a functioning squad with your friends.

I mean I really don't see a downside to them doing this, unless it's extremely poorly executed.
