This is what i currently know about the new game mode, firefight.
Introduction
Firefight is the new game mode in ODST for four players over system link or Xbox live. Two players can be on the same Xbox. Firefight is similar to the Gears of War 2, horde mode. But Firefight is based on waves, rounds and set. There's five waves in a round, and three rounds in a set. Firefight can be played in Easy, Normal, Heroic and Legendary. Instead of changing appearance of a spartan or a elite, the player can change the appearance of a ODST Marine. The player can change the service tag (of four numbers or letters), armor emblem and colors. The service tag can for example be changed to: TG36, 53UG, L19A or 5BO5. The start service tag is a short version of any of main ODST characters, here's those i know: ROOK, ROME, DUCH, MCKY, BUCK and DARE. So far I've only seen that the player can change the helmet of their ODST in the armor changing. Those helmets I've seen was the regular ones and without a helmet. In the armor changing the player can also change between which ODST the player want to play as. They can play as: The Rookie, Romeo, Dutch, Mickey, Buck, Dare, and Sgt. Johnson (Johnson can only be played as if the player has pre-ordered the ODST game from a specific retailer.) In the emblem changing the player can change the emblem of their ODST. The player can change their emblem to one of the emblems from Halo 3, or some of the new emblems. The player can change the color of the ODST. It is currently unknown which colors the player can change.
The start
The player(s) start in a small room with a door in front of the player(s). Just outside the door is ammunition to both the new SMG and the pistol. In the same room there's two grenades and two health packs. All of the items in the second room respawns every wave. Slowly the Covenant will start to arrive in phantoms and attack the the player(s). When the first round begins a skull from Halo 3 will turn on. In the next round another skull will be turned on and so on. When the next set begins, all skulls will be turned off, and then the skulls will be turned on in a different combination. The player(s) will have to defend themselves as long as possible.

Game Over
A Firefight game ends when player(s) runs out of lives. The Player(s) start of with 7 lives (notice the seven). And when a round is completed the player(s) is given five more lives.
When the game is over, the screen will go black, and then the player(s) will be shown his/her/their post game reports, where he/she/they can see all of their stats and points. All kills and stats can be seen on Bungie.net
The point of Firefight
The point of Firefight is to score points, and have fun of course. The points scoring works just like meta-game in Halo 3's campaign. All through there is some new medals for extra points:
Assist: Damage an enemy, and then have a teammate kill it.
Double kill: Kill 2 enemies within 4 seconds of each other.
Triple kill: Kill 3 enemies within 4 seconds of each other.
Overkill: Kill 4 enemies within 4 seconds of each other.
Killtacular: Kill 5 enemies within 4 seconds of each other.
Killtrocity: Kill 6 enemies within 4 seconds of each other.
Killimanjaro: Kill 7 enemies within 4 seconds of each other.
Killtastrophe: Kill 8 enemies within 4 seconds of each other.
Killpocalypse: Kill 9 enemies within 4 seconds of each other.
Killionaire: Kill 10 enemies within 4 seconds of each other.
Killing Spree: Kill 5 enemies without diying.
Killing Frenzy: Kill 10 enemies without diying.
Running Riot: Kill 15 enemies without diying.
Rampage: Kill 20 enemies without diying.
Untouchable: Kill 25 enemies without diying.
Invincible: Kill 30 enemies without diying.
