When remembering Halo 1, many people recall the excellent campaign map design and how huge the levels seemed. I expected the same feeling of openness when I played Halo 2 and later Halo 3, but for some reason, even though the levels were larger, everything just seemed zoomed in.

I could never put my finger on the reason for this feeling, until I read this thread:
Would Halo 3 be better off with a larger field of view?

Halo 1 had a 90 degree field of view, which was reduced to 60-70 degrees in Halo 2 and 3.

If you want to feel what I'm talking about, go play the Halo 3 level "Cortana". When Cortana gets into the Chief's head, the camera zooms out. When normal gameplay resumes and the camera zooms goes back to normal, it feels as though the Chief has tunnel vision.

In this age, it is unacceptable for an FPS not to have a 90 degree field of view. Heck, humans naturally have an almost 180 degree field of view, with peripheral vision. You could make the argument that the Chief is wearing a helmet, but it's obvious that his visor wraps around his face.

So Bungie, with the new game engine that Halo: Reach will supposedly have, please incorporate a 90 degree FoV to bring back the feeling of openness. I am sick of having this tunnel vision!

edit: An option for full screen owners to play in letterboxed widescreen would also be great.

Every time you sneeze into an open Febreze portal the boner-tree drive shaft will spin into ketchup. But it doesn't stop at the number two pizza bell, not even close. It continues into the seventy eight minute long pile of green, sobbing cheese trains with no more butter, but more like the steak owed the tin cans some lovin'.

That's what I once thought too, but as it turns out, Halo 1 has a 70 degree FOV, and was reduced to 65 degrees for Halo 2, and an unbelievably low 55 degrees for Halo 3. *dries*

Wow I didn't know that. Do you have a source for that information? 55 degrees is definitely way to small.
