Subject: Why's Bungie bouncing around the Halo plot line?

The name's Ian, Game Designer at Whisper Game Studios, very off-and-on Bungie.net visitor and avid Bungie fan overall. Message me if you wish.

Alright, just to warn you, this thread contains complaints and issues concerning Halo 4 so if you're severely annoyed with the recent surge of Halo 4 threads going around and the utter retardation of their authors than by all means, you can go now... If you're still reading this, I would like to let you know that I've been very confused as to why Bungie is "Jumping around the plot" with the games. I mean, ODST, sure, whatever it's an expansion, many companies do that. Then this game is announced. Now I'd be okay with it if they just didn't flat out say that "Recon is the last Halo game in our Halo package folks".

BAM! Halo Reach is announced, my reaction, dumbfounded, happy, but frustrated and angry that Bungie would lie. Now I'm not 100% sure that Bungie lied, maybe they just added another project onto their belt recently. The only ordeal in that is, how do you make a fully playable multiplayer portion of the game in 5 months. ODST was fully playable in campaign after a period of about a year and a third or so. Anyhow, I doubt that Bungie just randomly added another game onto their belt in any recent amount of time and have a fully playable multiplayer game. Why would they lie to the community?

So, either Halo 4 is in development now, or Bungie's gotta have some sort of trick going on up their sleeve. Maybe Frankie wasn't assigned to Chronicles, maybe Frankie was assigned to Halo 4 but it was codenamed chronicles to hide the true purposed of the game. Like how Halo 3 was just going to be called "Forerunners" in early speculation. It wasn't supposed to be Halo 3 at all, it was just going to be some game about the Forerunners. Although Bungie didn't "Seriously" approve of that rumor, they did nod to it, just acknowledging it. Joe did confirm though that it's codenamed chronicles. Not codenamed Halo 4.

Now, since Bungie's already lied to us once, I think they might have lied also about there not being a Halo 4. Trust me, I was among most of the community in full belief that Halo 4 will never happen. To this day, this moment, I still even think that Halo 4 can't and won't be made in a video game form. But this recent lie has lead me to think otherwise. I doubt that Frankie was sent to Microsoft to help as a rep from Bungie to work cooperatively to attempt to build a Halo game for NATAL but Frankie was sent at around the time NATAL was being put to the test for the first time ever and ONLY Frankie, the guy involved with Halo 3's story.

Maybe Frankie was sent to see a quick demo from an engine developed by an internal MSGS team for Halo 4 for NATAL. But then, why was Peter Jackson involved? He did mention that this game would "Blur the line between games and movies" which is what NATAL is trying to do in sorts. Now that Bungie has announced they've got 3 projects in the works and they originally said that ODST was the last in the halo package but then they announced Reach, this leads me to believe that tests have gone well with Halo 4. Wether or not it's going to be for NATAL is not in question, the question is, is Bungie developing Halo 4 behind hidden lines? Did Microsoft give them a quick boost by giving them a proposed engine for the new game and Frankie and Pete just helped build on that engine with new ideas for gameplay and story? Is Bungie making Halo 4?

I'm telling you, for the longest time, I thought Halo 4 would never happen... But Bungie's recent lie has somewhat disrupted my trust in their words. Not that I don't love you guys anymore, I still do, it's just that my trust has been shaken, and I have an appropriate right to question unless there is full blown proof of what's really going on. Which, I doubt, we will ever get to see for another few years.

EDIT: I found the enter key.

PEANUT-BUTTER SLAP!

There is an 'enter' key on your keyboard. Use it to break that into paragraphs if you actually expect people to read it.
Now, after reading that unbearably huge paragraph twice, I'm still not entirely sure what you're trying to say.

I wish I was still legendary.

MC, they only ever said they were done with the story arc. Not Halo.

Basically, they said 'we'll keep making Halo games, but none will revolve around the Halos themselves'.

Frankie wasn't assigned to the cancelled chronicles, he was assigned to the Microsoft Halo franchise team. he was going to be involved with ALL future halo games, books and anything else.

Halo: Chronicles has NOTHING to do with bungie beyond being a Halo game. It was going to be produced by Wingnut Studios, Weta (maybe digital) and peter jackson, then published by microsoft.

"If you push this button. Someone. Somewhere will die.

BUT.

You will, hey wait! Didn't you wanna hear what you'd get first!"

What do you mean five months, reach isn't coming out for a few years. If you mean what I think, then to let you know the reach beta won't open up for a few years.

The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher regard those who think alike than those who think differently.

كل نفس ذائقة الموت

There's the Halo Universe, which involves billions of characters and billions of possible stories and there's the Halo Trilogy story arc, which involved the story of Master Chief's fight against the covenant and the stories surrounding those events.

Bungie didn't lie when they said that ODST was the last game in the current story arc. Reach follows a different timeline and characters.

I think you assume too much and don't read carefully enough.

your entire premise is based on something that isn't even true.

Bungie said Halo 3 was the last in the Halo Story Arc. That means there will either not be a true sequel to the story that involves you playing as MC, or there will never be a Halo game with a 4 after it.

Halo 3 ODST is an expansion to Halo 3, and Halo Reach is it's own new game, not an expansion to Halo 3.

  • 07.15.2009 8:43 PM PDT

Halo: Reach =/= Halo 4

The Halo story arc about Master Chief and the Halos is over, it's done. But not the Halo series in general. In several interviews post-Halo 3, bungie members stated they were still interested in exploring side-stories of the Halo universe not directly related to the main storyline and characters. Halo Wars, Halo 3: ODST, and Halo: Reach are examples.

P.S. - For the love of my eyes, break that massive post into paragraphs. Slogging through that wall gave me a headache.

Well yes, it is...but betas do not happen when the game is finished. They happen near completion in order to find out what improvements need to be made. Also it is scheduled for a fall release 2010 which is still more than a year away.

I also remember that Bungie has been talking about their 3 new projects since Halo 3's launch, which means Reach just like ODST has been in development for atleast 2 years. If you are worried that Reach is going to suffer in quality because it is being rushed, don't worry, it isn't being rushed.

You guys are enterpereting this all wrong! First of all, Liam is the only one I can understand, I'm not talking about the beta, and this is NOT a new timeline! Don't even say that it is because FOR was the first book to come out and it INVOLVED the chief! So now that my views are cleared somewhat I can understand that Bungie may NOT have lied but still... Okay, maybe there isn't a halo 4 going to be published, maybe it's just a load of shenanigans. Maybe I'm wrong but either way, I need to know what happened to the chief. Book, movie, game, whatever.

Bungie said there would be no more games based around the halo arrays, not no more halo games. Big difference.

The Halo Trilogy is done.
But that doesn't mean Bungie can't continue Halo whenever they want, and please learn more English if you want to be cool.

Exactly.

Some people forget that being a game developer is still a job. Some people also forget about surprises and secrets. Just because it was recently announced, doesn't mean that it was only recently created. It takes a hell of a lot to make a game, and it's not like they thought about what would make a cool announcement teaser, then they start figuring out the plot and such.

Reach was not recently 'added to their belt' - it's been in the works since before Halo 3 was finished (in terms of preproduction)

Fight for Freedom

Reach is copy and paste :P they already had the build now they have to template it and fix all the bugs. so thats about a years worth of work.

Exactly, the Halo Trilogy involving the rings and the Covenants quest to fire them and start the Sacred Journey is done. Ark is gone, Prophets are gone, Convenant is disbanded.

But that doesn't mean everyone in the Halo universe suddenly died and there are no more games. Halo: Reach isn't exactly a different timeline, but it takes place before the humans had any idea of the rings and therefore falls before the original story line and THEREFORE Bungie did not lie to us.

As for "Halo 4", there is a huge possibilty (and I'm really hoping) that they will continue the story of MC after the events of Halo 3 but that doesn't mean it has to have anything to to do with the convenant. He could end up crashing on that planet and finding a whole new enemy to fight. OR he could find a huge convenant stronghold and the remaining convenant species regroup and make a New Covenant to get back at the humans. Doesn't have to involve the rings and therefore is not part of the original trilogy. possibilities are endless.

Reach MMO. Here's to hoping.

And the people that believe "the hardcore playlists would be more popular if the rules were strictly MLG" can come off it, now. If you're not willing to support something close to your own setup, there's no reason for us to believe that cloning our own lists and stripping the variety down will attract more people. -- Shishka, Bungie.net

I can't even begin to read that wall.
