Subject: I'm confused about Halo3:ODST's Brutes

A well-built sniper rifle is a beautiful thing. Mine has two separate levels of zoom: 'Up-close-and-personal' and 'Hello-you're-dead'.

I'm a littile bit confused about the stuff in H3:ODST, here it goes:

You are an ODST named Rookie, and goes to a mision on his HIV (HEV, oops), but crash and woke up 6 hours later in New Mombassa, and then you see a Brute with Armor!
How come the brute has armor! And why there is no elites?
What? Master Chief killed Regret, the Brutes wiped out the Elites on Earth, and design a power armor for the brutes during those 6 hours?!?! I think you need more hours to do all that.
And why the brutes in Delta Halo and High Charity have little or no armor?
And the Brutes in Delta Halo were protecting TARTARUS "The Chieftain of the Brutes" and why weren't any Brute Chieftains to protect Tartarus, or some well-armed Brutes?
And the ones on High Charity were protecting the Prophet of Truth, why didn't those brutes had armor?
An the ones in New Mombassa wear armor, but they didn't even were protecting somebody.

Lets say all of this is canonical.
I don't understand what happen there with the Brutes can someone explain me what happen?

When the Elites were in charge of the Covenant, they didn't let the Brutes use most of their weapons and technology because they didn't trust them. Once the Elites split off from the Covenant, the Brutes took charge and issued their full assortment of gear to their troops.

Jesse you Fail. This game takes place during Halo 2, the Elites haven't split off.

Anyways, the Elites were all taken from Earth to protect Regret, meanwhile the Brutes were sent to Earth to look around for The Ark, they would need armour to protect themselves from humans.

  • 07.16.2009 7:57 PM PDT

Thats a first.

Basically cous All the elites boarded regrets ship before it went into slipspace. only a small fleet of covenant went to earth as cortana says in halo 2 they didnt expect humanity to live there,

Brutes were sent by Truth to clean up and also as a bigger plan as he didnt trush the elites and wanted to push them aside.

If thats true, the Brutes are damn fast for making all that under 6 hours.

That was uncalled for.

And nay, I do not "fail". It is plainly laid out in This update that this is the EXACT reason why there are no Elites in ODST. Try to think before mindlessly flaming.

I said you failed because the Brutes have their armour before the Elites leave the Covenant, so your earlier reason was invalid.

wow nice to see that most of these people are just assuming what they think is truth. that will hurt you in the real world. anyways the story is is that bungie DID in fact do an "oopsie" right there. because at the time that all this happened elites havent separated from the covenant and the brutes still didnt have their new power armor. bungie did throw a curve ball in the story (more of a loop around go forward and backward ball) but this is THEIR story.

this takes place after halo 2 and two weeks before halo3. but the elites have already seperated from the covenant and the brutes are the now reining combat hierarchy of the covenant.

No you didn't. Your exact words are in your quote itself, you never mentioned armor as part of your post. You simply said "This game takes place during Halo 2, the Elites haven't split off." Which isn't true, since the Elites do split off during Halo 2.

Do try to pay attention, sir.

EDIT: Plus, it is clearly stated that the Brutes do have power armor in Contact Harvest, and it goes into detail about how the Elites kept the Brutes from using many of their best weapons and equipment. Just sayin'.

It's built on the Halo 3 engine, there were no enemy A.I. for the elites in Halo 3 so they really didn't have a choice other than completely reprogramming the elites.

Which would be a bit much for just an expansion.

"We are the next generation of soldiers, an A.I built for war. We battle the darkness for humanity. We are the Caedus A.I"

If you read "Halo: Contact Harvest" you find out that the brutes already have power armor.
Also Bungie didint think about power armor when they made Halo 2.

thats not true at all! if the elites didnt trust the brutes enough to have armour the brutes wouldnt be in the covenant! the reason is: the brutes you see in halo 2 are tarturas brutes. tarturas didnt believe in using power armor because he felt it was not honorable or something. and the reason tarturas isnt protected me other brute chieftans is because he is the supreme cheiftan. that should answer your questions. only the brutes under tarturas's command dont wear armor.

Do you have a source on that? It sounds interesting, I've never heard anything about Tartarus not liking power armor.

In the days of old, there were legends of a land long lost to time. This land was known as Ranna'Mor. Ranna'Mor was said to contain in its borders 7 warriors. These warriors had once unleashed a veritable hell upon the ancient world, until they were locked away. My name is Toriad, and I am one of those warriors. Our return is approaching. Do not run away, do not cower in fear; take solace in your final days, for that is all we can do. -Legend of Ranna'Mor

Okay, at the time the game takes place, Regret just escaped from new Mombasa (in Halo 2, we saw this as In Amber Clad). Also, the elites still had their place in the covenant. So, who do you leave to guard the city? Your most trusted soldiers (elites), or the expendable troops (Brutes)?

Brutes is the obvious answer. Now, if you've read the books, the brutes have had the power armor seen in Halo 3 since the attacks on Harvest, so, it makes sense.

Oh okay that , makes sense.

So basically the Brutes always had the armor, but didn't start using it (or atleast a whole lot) until that period when they were sent to New Mobassa to clear the city.

It all makes sense now.
