Talk to the Bones

you would know this would never work if you played halo 2's multyplayer

I think BR/Pistol and SMG start could work really well if the game were balanced right. This would give players a chance in all ranges of combat right off the spawn and give them the option to dual wield. The AR would be located on map.

I'm not the biggest fan of dual wielding but I guarantee it will be in Halo:Reach so it mine as well be done right. When dual wielding your weapons should retain all their fire power meaning you have 200% damage but the accuracy and range should be really bad. In Halo 3 you had 150% damage and only a slight accuracy decrease. You should also be able to holster your dual wield combo. Dual wieldable weapons should be much more effective on their own, for example the Plasma Rifle would be like in Halo CE.

In a clip (I think it was a vidoc) they said they didn't like the smg as a starting waepon because people would duel wield and not throw gernades or mele as much.

if you want the smg to be a "main" weapon then the Assault rifle should be deleted (like Halo 2)

I think a scoped SMG (like ODST's) would be a good starting weapon. It would work because with a dual wield they would lose the scope. The AR could then be made more like the halo CE version, a full on close range weapon, instead of a piece of rubbish that can't decide if it's short or mid range and fails epicly at both.
