I don't think they need to add anything else to this category. In Halo 3 they tried the Gravity Hammer which in my opinion didn't work out at all.

Well I think that the Gravity Hammer and Energy Sword are enough. No human blades would work. Its already two melees to kill so all a human blade would do is leave you unable to shoot with similar melee strength.

fast reflexes for defense and shields and indestructible armor and I'm pretty sure the under armor is knife resistant (nowadays, bulletproof vests are... so 500 years later, I'm sure it'll be too) < strength + reflexes.

The only way i can see a combat knife is in campaign mode to use against grunts and jackals... In the books the spartans do use knifes and such, but against shields and a half ton armor it can only do so much, but then again in multiplayer you hit each other over the head with a pistol and that kills them too.

UNSC using Covenant plasma blade technology

doesn't make sense.
Reach is before H3. there was nothing like this in H3. so why would there be a human blade thing in Reach?

Well they need people to say 'why not do this' in order to come up with magnificent ideas. so....

Why not have bayonets on some guns like the covenant carbine kinda thing, (i know they're not if H:CE but ... WHY NOT!?)

Actually the Gravity Hammer was introduced in Halo 2. Because Brutes would be the center of attention in Halo 3, and that we would see other chieftains then Tarterus, adding the gravity was a must-have.

I think the shotgun, hammer, and energy sword is good balance right now. Can't really imagine how any other melee range weapons would work out without being redundant.

Melee range weapons all kill with one hit at melee range and have some mechanic that allows the user to catch up to people at close range.

Sword lunges.
Hammer has a short lunge and creates a gravity well.
Shotgun fires non-lethal shots at close range.
