Subject: Whats up with the price tag for ODST?

It has bin some time since I have bin on the forums on Bungie's site. So don't be posting stupid comments alright. Ok good now that we cleared that up we can talk about ODST. I was searching gamestop's site a few moments ago when I found out that the price tag for ODST was 60 dollars U.S. Whats up with that? I remember last year when Halo 3 ODST was announced in the Gameinformer with The ODST guy on the cover. IT had an entire section regarding ODST. It also had a small section about the price tag. Now this is were things get interesting. The good folks at Bungie gave us a different price point for ODST which was around 30 to 40 dollars U.S. standard. My question is simple if Halo 3 ODST is an expansion to Halo 3 and will only have around 3 to 4 hours of game play and one new mode called firefight and 3 new maps then should the game should cost around 30 dollars U.S. and not the full price point since Halo 3 ODST is not a new title its still Halo 3.

The fight has been complete.... now get the cookies!

While we certainly share your enthusiasm for the return, we here at the Bungie.net community are mostly made up of snarky asses and jerks who will ridicule you for making a thread about something revealed months ago. We regret that your innocent intentions will almost certainly be replied with anger and sarcasm, and politely invite you to don your Flame-suit, because you just did the internet equivalent of jumping up the Construct lifts.

Actually it is what Bungie WANTED to make it but Microsoft thinks otherwise and did that. Plus there was way to many fricken price tags so you just brought them back up.

the game is actually worth MORE than 60 bucks content wise. brand new campaign (Much longer than 4 hours btw) Fire fight, and ALL of halo 3's multiplayer, with every map.

“Oh, it’s a little bit of everything, it’s the mountains, it’s the fog, it’s the news at six o’clock, it’s the death of my first dog, it’s the angels up above me, it’s the song that they don’t sing, It’s a little bit of everything.”
- Dawes, A little bit of everything

Okay, the way I see it, it's $20 dollars more (around that). I don't really see this game as an expansion to Halo 3 but more as it's own title...if you don't want to pay the $20 more, then don't. No one's holding a knife to your throat making you buy it.

  • 07.18.2009 10:51 AM PDT

I completely reject your reality and substitute it with my own.

What started off as a simple expansion. Bungle had made this game to the point where it is now a full fledged game of its own. It's no big deal really tho. It just means it better be worth the extra money right?

this has been discussed far to many times.

1st off Bungie doesn't change the prices Microsoft does.
2nd the campaign is more tht 3-4 hours, since it's open environment and can make it up to 10 if you want.
and 3rd, you get fireflight, all halo 3's maps and matchmaking, and 3 new maps, so its very fair to me.

If you still think this is a rip off, don't buy it.

forgetting about the rookie end of the campaign bungie said each flashback will be about an hour long there are six of them....

The game is called Halo 3 ODST need I say more. If it was a standalone title then the game would be just be called ODST instead of Halo 3 ODST. So yes Halo 3 ODST is an expansion pack to Halo 3 and it should now be priced at 60 dollars.

  • 07.18.2009 11:07 AM PDT

30-40?

Every new xbox 360 game is 99.99% of the time 60 bucks. Unless it sucks or its the burger king game it will be 60. I wouldn't call it an expansion. Its a new game with a new storyline and co-op game mode but it has a different disk for the halo 3 multiplayer with new maps. The campaign of Halo 3 isnt on the 2nd disk so I dont see how this game could be considered an expansion and be worth 30-40 bucks. Its a new game with halo 3 multiplayer not Halo 3 with added stuff to it.

edit#1:Its called Halo 3: ODST because it takes place near the same time as Halo 3. Instead of playing through masterchief's story around that time, you play the story of a group of ODSTs.

edit#3: With your logic your saying Halo 2 is an expansion to Halo1, and halo 3 is an expansion to halo 2. There just different parts of the series, just like odst.

An example of an expansion would be Point Lookout for Fallout three, it adds more gameplay to an exsiting game(via game marketplace download) and is not a new game by itself. ODST is not an expansion since you didnt download anything to add to the Halo 3 disk's storyline.

I am not going to buy an expansion pack for 60 dollars. If it was a standalone title then maybe I would consider it. But since the it is an expansion pack for Halo 3 then it should not be priced at 60 dollars. If that was the case for all games like Fallout 3 than your telling me that Microsoft has the right to place the same rules for that games expansion pack's. Don't give me that crap kid. If Microsoft made Fallout 3 look out point 60 dollars who do you think will buy it? Will you? I don't think so Microsoft thinks if Halo 3 has many fans all around the world then they can put a price tag as high as they want. Let me ask you something would you pay for Halo 3 Odst the same price point as Halo 3 and let me tell you something right now a new copy of Halo 3 is around 40 dollars so your going to be paying 20 dollars more for 3 new maps and 4 hours of game play. I am sorry if your going to be buying that but that's one -blam!- deal if you ask any one else that works for their money.

there is much more than 4 hour of game play. when they first speculated about the price, the game was only about 4 hour long. it now has 6 flashbacks at an hour a pies and according to bungie, it's about half an hour to an hour between the flashbacks. that means you have about 9-10 hours of gameplay. Bungie has said it developed into a full game, and they no longer view it as an expansion.

it does say Halo 3 in the title, but it's speculated that the only reason they don't change the name to halo: ODST is the cost of changing the name again and updating all the marketing material would cost quite a bit of money.

actually by the fact you don't need halo 3 or any knowledge of the events of halo 3 to play it... it is standalone. this could be the first halo game you buy and it is built so you would be able to understand it.

the fact you don't need halo 3 to play it means it is in fact standalone

I never said they made the expansion 60 dollars for fallout and expansions would never be priced that high...

Halo 3:ODST is not a freaking expansion

It has a completely different campaign and there is no Halo 3 campaign so they didnt add to it(which is what expansions do)

Halo 3 is priced 40 now because its an old game that came out in 2007 and thats why its cheaper. Halo 3 ODST is priced higher because it is newer. It has more than 4 hours of gameplay so stop saying that and ignoring the comments about it being longer than that. Halo 3 ODST should be more money know than halo 3 is currently because-

Halo 3 use to be 60 bucks when it first came out and it had

*A campaign(main game)
*and multiplayer

ODST is priced the same as when Halo 3 first came out and it has
*A NEW AND COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CAMPAIGN(main game)
*Multiplayer with 9 maps the halo 3 didnt originally have when it first came out(3 of which are new).

If you payed for each map pack when they first came out for halo 3 you have spent like 90 bucks on it and odst has the same maps in it and its cheaper.
I dont know why your complaining halo 3 was actually more expansive and I think your getting a great deal if you didnt buy any of the map packs for halo 3(its still a good deal if you bought them all though).

The actual price of halo 3 (if you bought all the map packs for it when they first came out) is 90 bucks
ODST is 60 and it has more maps than it even if you bought all the map packs. So ODST is actually cheaper.

If you still think its unfair dont buy it. What was the point of putting this thread if want to know why its 60 bucks if your not going to listen why.

to do this would be very expensive and not very cost effective. there is lots of marketing materials to change, and so they are leaving the title alone, however the guy who posted above you is correct

It says halo 3 on the cover because it happens near the time of halo 3.

An expansion pack, expansion set, or supplement is an addition to an existing role-playing game, tabletop game or video game. These add-ons usually add new game areas, weapons, objects, and/or an extended storyline to a complete and already released game. While board game expansions are typically designed by the original creator, video game developers sometimes contract out development of the expansion pack to third-party company, or it may choose to develop the expansion itself (see Hellfire for Diablo). Board games and RPGs have been marketing expansions since at least the early 1970s. he price of an expansion pack is usually much less than that of the original game. As expansion packs consist solely of additional content, most expansion packs require the original game in order to play. Games with many expansions often begin selling the original game with prior expansions, such as The Sims Deluxe Edition (The Sims with The Sims: Livin' Large). These bundles make the game more accessible to new players. When games reach the end of their lifespan, the publisher often releases a 'complete' or 'gold' collection which includes the game and all its subsequent expansions. Expansion packs are most commonly released for computer games, but are becoming increasingly prevalent for video game consoles, particularly due to the popularity of online console services such as Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network. One such console expansion pack would be the Halo 2 Multiplayer Map Pack which contain 9 new maps and updates for the game that were only available for Xbox Live users

Bungie's Halo 3 expansion, Halo 3 Recon? The scoop addicts at Game Informer are sporting it as their December cover story which, far from being spartan, is chock full o' details on the unusual offering. As we saw in Tokyo, the boys at Bungie are downplaying the game's length, insisting it's not "a $60 game" and is more like "a three to five-hour expansion pack."

First i'm not a kid by any measure. 25 is well into adult hood.

Second, i have told you over and over, they already changed the name once. to do it again now that ll of the marketing materials are out there would cost quite likely nearing the millions. at the very least the hundred of thousands of dollars to re do to just remove a number. It's not cost effective enough for them to do it.

My facts are fine. All that has been stated by Bungie on the matter is that they no longer consider it an expansion that it has evolved into a full retail game
