I almost missed the first Halo.
My friends all got into it about a year after it came out, in 2002, and were trying to convince me to buy it. However, up to that point, I had never found FPS games that exciting, so I passed on their advice and kept right on playing my RPGs and fighting games.
September 2004: Halo 2 is about to come out. Everyone's going bananas over it. My friends have gotten me interested in the series with the promise of an engaging sci-fi story and I'm impressed with the E3 demo. I decide, "What the hell?" and buy the first Halo for my Xbox. Almost immediately, I become hooked. I remember taking over two hours to complete Pillar of Autumn while I got used to the controls, as well as playing what was essentially my first FPS ever, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and promised myself I would complete the entire campaign by the end of the week. Unfortunately, I chose to play on Heroic difficulty, so it took me about two weeks to get through the game, but the experience was very rewarding and, after downloading Halo Trial for the PC, I got hooked on the game's multiplayer as well.
When Halo 2 finally came out two months later, I actually stood in line at a Toys-R-Us to purchase the game. (Yes, really.) Ever since that day, I've felt quite secure in considering myself a Halo uber-fan, despite the fact that I do not think Halo 3 lived up to the standards of its predecessors.
