I know many AR and BR threads have been put on on theHalo: Reach forum, but I just have this to suggest. Basically, why not just mix the AR with the BR? The middle Spartan's gun sems like its an AR, but has the extended muzzle of a BR. I would imagine it would work like this. While un-scoped, it would be automation, but while scoped, it would switched to a three round burst or maybe even remain automation. Thought I might throw this in to give another option to this whole debate.

If they were to make such a gun, they would need to destroy the system in Halo 3 and build it back from the ground up.

Otherwise you would have a sentinel beam. Its both a medium and close range weapon. Its broken, and its why it doesn't appear in normal matchmaking save for a single community made map variant.

By the looks of it, the new SMG looks pretty good. And Hylebos, I guess you have a point. But its only an idea.

I realize this, and my observation doesn't kill it. We all might be making a horribly wrong assumption when we guess that Halo 3 is to Halo Reach as Halo 2 was to Halo 3. They could be built off of two entirely different sandboxes.

You do realise that you can't go further than the 60th minute in an hour right?

Yeah ok, maybe not in Canada...

It would have to be weak or that would just be unfair.

Oh of course. I wonder what an acceptable about of damage would be? Any takers?

Look... I'm on bungiepedia!

It would be overpowered if it could get headshots... I think that the AR should be upgraded to include one of the BR's functions (long-range supression).

If you hold the trigger, it fires in full auto, and is as inaccurate as the Halo 1 AR. You can fire slower by pulsing the triggers, and the accuracy will be somewhere between the H3 AR and BR. You could also tap the trigger for single shots, which would be as accurate as the H2 BR.

This AR would have a scope (like the SMG in H3 ODST), 45 rounds/magazine, and fires 10 rounds/second in automatic. If you land bodyshots, its weak (about as strong as the Halo 1 AR) but if you can manage headshots, there is a 200% damage bonus, so that we can out-AR people now.

We would still need a midrange weapon capable of headshots, so give us a "scaled up 117%" Spartan model Pistol (M6D?) with a scope, which would operate similar to the H1 or H3 ODST Pistol.

Live and Learn!

They should increase the damage of the first five bullets fired from an AR(not the first five of a clip but the first five after you press the trigger). That way burst firing is more effective and essentially the AR becomes more "skill required" for all of the MLG players...

I love this idea, one rifle with 2 firing modes.

Maybe it could have a design like this also: Rifle(The Rifle the first 2 Spartans are holding)

I like the compact, bullpup assault rifle like design to it and I believe Reach should introduce a new rifle as it's trademark weapon like Halo CE had the AR(although the pistol is more famous) ,Halo 2 introduced the BR and then Halo 3 had both.

You are lame...

This idea would totally work if you:

-make it single shot fire only
-added a 12 round clip
-made it a 3 shot kill as long as the last shot is a headshot

get out of here stalker

If only that weren't true...

I think they should just in the name alone. I mean think about it they could name it the B.A.R. - Blasting Automatic Rifle or Badas Automatic Rifle or Buy Another Round. Just throwing those out there.

Halo weapons almost entirely have a single function. Multi-function guns rarely exist in Halo (Plasma Pistol and H2 Rocket are the only ones I can think of).

I pseronally think they are fine and should be kept seperate. A gun that dominates or is extremely strong in literally every single field is not good.

I actually imagine the SMG on Halo: ODST will be very much like a mix of the BR and AR. It's longer range, scoped, automatic, and just as a bonus, the suppressor.

I'm quite excited to use it.

Or... Browning Automatic Rifle... come on be more creative than that.

Multi function guns would be a bit hard to balance and may be a bit overpowered. Look at the SOCOM series and the number of weapons banned by the players as overpowered. Halo is an arcade shooter; not a realistic tactical shooter with different firing modes. It would be cool if I could switch between auto and semi-auto with a button, but then that would just make the AR+BR the dominant gun in the game and give it a big advantage over carrying two different guns like a short range Plasma Rifle and a Carbine.

Cheewawa gets how to balance such an arcade shooter like Halo.

Glad that Halo 3 garbage is dead, thanks to Reach.
Unfreakenbelievable!!

I usually always agree with you. But, I think if designed correctly, unlike the OP's suggestion, it could replace the BR's fuctionality.

The OP's suggestion where when scoped it fires semi and auto when unscoped I thought was dumb, and would require a completely different damage set for unscope and scoped.

The way it would need to work would be like this...
Similar to how the RFG AR functions and similar to how the M6D functioned.
It is more accurate, alot actually, when burst fired and gets a wider of a spread when auto'd. It would be completely an automatic that the accuracy and RoF is controlled by the user. The damage points for body and headshots could be adjusted for balance to be as effective as what other mid-range weapon there is.

Which brings me to this...A single-shot weapon, as in the M6D, would still be in the mix if this was to happen. There is in no way that they would noobify the BR even more than it already is and not bring in another workhorse weapon with range.

But, there are ways to make every weapon deal headshots and still be balanced. Look at Red Faction:Guerrilla for example, which by the way has powerful single-shot weapons with the AR being the primary weapon (though a very easy weapon to use, yet still less powerful than the Pistol).

simple... it would screw the game and make all other anti - infantry weapons obsolete.
