It seems that we're divided on whether or not the
marathon and halo stories can really mesh. I've
been pondering this question for some time now,
and a small amount of info from the book "First
Strike" helped me cook up a theory.
*SPOILERS AHEAD*
in FS, the epilougue says that the Covenant are in
the ninth age of reclamation. Also, I belive it was the
documentary that mentions something about a great
battle that took place 900,000 years ago. The covies
"age" may be a period of 100,000 years, and
coincedentally, 343GS was left alone for 101,217
years. The Chief was called "reclaimer" by 343, and
the "ages of reclamation" could relate to this.
Think about this. What if the Halo is fired every
100,000 years, wiping everything out in the galaxy.
Now you're probably thinking, "But that would kill
everything, including them and us!" However, Earth
is on the very edge of the galaxy, and the effect of
the ring may be diminished. The same may be true
with the covenant.
The end result of the firing would blast humans and
covenant to the stone age, forcing them to wait another
100,000 years to race for "Reclaimation of the index."
With the power of the prophets and all, why wouldn't the
covenant just go to a halo and grab the index? Simple.
They're absolutely terrified of the flood. The prophets
most likely intentions were to stop the humans from
reaching the halo, because they would assume we know
nothing about them. This begs the question, "who made
the halos 900,000 years ago, and who was involved in
this great war?"
This where the halo and marathon stories collide. Okay,
so lets track all the way back to marathon. In Marathon,
Durandal calls on the pfhor to attack the Marathon ship.
The effect of this confrontation could have brought a
massive war with the pfhor and humans. As this war
raged, the humans became desperate, and built the
halos and engineered the flood as a last ditch effort to
halt the pfhor assault. This is when things get hairy. The
humans begin to lose, and fire the halo, destroying life in
the galaxy, but ironically, remnants of humans and remnants
of the pfhor live on. The cycle of reclamation and mutual
destruction continues, and the pfhor evolve into the
covenant over time.
As for evidence to support this theory, there was a little
hint on one of the myth CDs that was written by Cortana.
"In a relatively brief period of time, the achievements of
SolCore had resulted in an economically stable, techno
logically mature, rapidly expanding empire of eight human
worlds. Advancements in technology arrived at a faster
pace than the most optimistic scientists could have ever
envisioned. Unexpected contact with indigenous human
populations on four "lost colony" worlds led to a frenzy of
research as archaeologists, theologians, astronomers,
and evolutionary biologists competed to offer an explanation
for the startling discovery. Many accepted the findings as
proof that their privileged civilization must surely be the
most advanced in the universe. Others eagerly
anticipated future interaction with intelligent "aliens".
The fear of not being the only sentient species in the universe
was forgotten in the giddy excitement of a new era for
humanity. "
How could humans get on other worlds with "lost colonies"
if we've never been there before?
Or have we?
Sorry for the lengthy post but it was necessary to say what
I wanted. Please relply!
P.S. All the credit for discovering the hidden cortana message
and the FS spoilers belongs to the individuals who kindly
submitted their finding to the halo and marathon story pages.
