when combined with Tammo1's theory, this fits perfectly the Gilgamesh/Enkidu myth, and it would also fit what is happening perfectly, including that it sounds plausible. I think we have a winner!

Does the story have to parallel the myth it references? If that is the case, then the Spartans, and the humans in general, have to die since the real life Spartans, and the Greeks in general, were conquered by the Romans and then later by the Turkish Ottoman Empire leaving only vague cultural ties to the ancients and an essentially weak state in the modern times.

Besides, I think Bungie is creative enough to come up with their own ending.

In other news the only decent 11:11:11 tie I could find is that 11/11/11 (November 11th, 1911) had a massive cold front move across the nation leading to a great deal of record temperature lows in American cities, but also record high temperatures in other American cities. So, perhaps the time stamp on that terminal is a clever reference to the cold temperature on Frigid.

hmm. sounds like durandal again..

i was wondering about how when thoth and durandal merged in infinity reacted to each other and it was a much higher state.

we know E is rampant - that is for sure.

what i am curious about in the latest terminal is the comment that "it" will never end.. i can understand the last two because it goes hand in hand with a rampant ai.. and yes, i think green eyes means that E is in the last stages of rampancy.

so my question is whether "it" means the battle with the covenant - or the persuit of what ever E is seeking. (or humanity seeking)

i dont think the references to humans sleeping means death - i think it is more a reference to lack of knoweldge.. i also do think that E is refering to "we" as the earth forces. They originally did not seek to land on the planet, but were jumped. the covenant were there trying to -blam!- and pillage technology from frigid.

which begs the question - based on the jjaro or the s'pht k'rr from marathon.. will the forerunners (or somthing linked to thime.. E's knowledge?) make an appearence or leak somthing to the humans to stop the covenant?

one other thing - note that in the meta tags there is a mention of marathon and AI rampancy!

Maybe its Stubby who is suffering from envy. Green eyed at this fanfic. Oh god what if its a fanfic reference pointing out the fact that this isn't a bungie thing.

God no! I refuse to believe that!

I'm not saying they can't make up their own ending, Noir. I have to assume that the references that they are making refer to something. Unless this is the case, this whole forum would have been futile in it's efforts to discover something. Furthermore, I'm not pointing to the ending. Many modern day movies and stories are laid upon the framework of standard hero stories, that doesn't mean they're all the same.

Your Spartan example is flawed because you carry it too far. The idea of the spartans was a nation-state devoted to it's armed services. Sparta needed no walls because every man woman and child would pick up a weapon and defend their home when needed. Beyond that, there are no more parallels to be found and the meaning dies out.

The guys and gals who wrote this want us to figure something out with it. Let's start looking for meaningful connections to different ancient heroes and try to stray from connections that can't take us anywhere or tell us anything we don't already know.

Actually, I just thought of something. Someone should look up "john 117" in the bible. Might be some relevance there.

Addition: I'm changing my mind. I don't think he's a Spartan. There's quite a bit pointing away from that. What is Mather's talking about when he says "Enkidu told me about you. That doesn't matter anymore. We're all in this together now" in Winter Interlude? This is a pretty big tip off that there's something double sided about JD. He also says something else right before that: "Or maybe you don't need me to tell you that, 'sailor'." Apparently JD isn't even a marine.
Or, option 2, he's a Spartan, but he was posing as a shipman for some reason so the Captain didn't know but Enkidu did.

Whoa! Updates are popping up left and right! A new one while I was posting. Okay, and it tells us that this place isn't a ringworld. Hrm, definently wierd.

read the terminals in marathon.. i think it was marathon 2 where durandal talks about how the molinirs were used to crush the mars rebellion..

now how does this apply to halo?

maybe the spartans have a similar past.

with all the updates coming so fast, somthing is up.

okay, this last terminal acknowlegdes that there are two sides of E.. it sounds like there was some sort of forerunner AI construct in the computers there - and that could be that 5th front..

it sounds like to me also that somthing happened in its past which caused things to go pfft. like that.

THIS HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE. PPPPLLLLEEEEAAAASSSSEEEE read all of the posts that have been made before yours, so as not to show your ignorance. This -blam!- happens every couple of pages, and then we waste time just saying the same things over and over and over.

so with the new terminal, we now see that Enkidu has at least 3 personalities, and the structure was not built to house the flood. So how did the Flood get there? Perhaps the Flood went there because there were Forerunner there a long long time ago, and were seeking a meal? Why else entrap them in a place they aren't supposed to be?

Confirmation of Enkidu multiple personalities...
"Please repair the junction box now. Quickly. Before I change my minds again."

I think Enkidu's many personalities decided that the crew and enkidu should leave Frigid... emphisis on the "I think".... :-)

thats what we were talking about. :)

now.. i noticed in the meta tags the words "triphonal fugue"

if you do a search you come up with triphon.. as in The monastery of Saint Triphon near Skopje..

sounds a bit like the marathon infinity level: A Converted church in venice, itally.

here are the terminals: http://marathon.bungie.org/story/convertedchurch.html

if you were wondering - it is also in the "envy" part of infinity (the last of the 3 stages of rampancy).

odly enough - human forces are engaged in lava tunnels.. hmm. wonder if that anomly is similar to it?

Not Christmas tree, Cedar tree. What got Enkidu killed in the epic of Gilgamesh? Wasn't it when Enkidu and Gilgamesh chopped down a Cedar tree from the Lebanon forest to get the attention of Humbaba and slay it. This angered the gods and Enkidu was killed for it. Plus the title Timber leads me to believe that this is a parallel, and either one or all of Enkidu's three "personalities" will be sacrificed or killed off in the process of this escape that they're planning.

Addition: It doesn't seem that any of the personalities harbor much ill will for the crew of the Lebanon, one just seems to be scared(almost childlike).

  • 05.13.2004 12:00 AM PDT

Me: "OMFG, Dude... wtf!"
AbolitionofMan: "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to betray you."
Me: "That's the 4th time in this game alone!"
Chris: "Third, besides he had the flag I was trying to stop him, how was I supposed to know you were there."
Me: "I said, 'I got the Flag, don't shoot.'"
Chris: "Well those Wraith shots take a while to reach you."
Me: "You were right next to me, I had killed him and a minute passed before you decided to shoot."
Chris: "Hahahahaha, yeah... that was great."

Ok, we see 3 personalities. We have E. the Human AI which is smart and decisive besides very coherent, we have what appears to be childish form of an AI, who is unsure of what he is doing or wants since he agrees and then questions what he just agrees, and then another altogther self who appears to be like the first but is in total disagreement. What could this one mean when he says he doesn't want to go back. He seems very content to be where he/they are. He makes the comment :

"i don't want to
leave. we stay.
i'm afraid to go.
it's too dark and
scary down there.
like the old place.
like the scary place."

followed by...

"alright then. we'll go. goodbye, my friend. my only friend. goodbye. goodbye."

His references to my friend, my only friend. Is he speaking of JD?? I would assume so since their are two other E.'s and he says friend not friend(s). When they say friends I think they are refering to the Mathers and the Marines. Perhaps E has gone rampant and the scary place is inside the network of the Forerunner, they reference they went to the scary place the first time... I think when E was put into that terminal. So now you have a rampant AI with a possible Forerunner threat as well perhaps?? Also, the childish form seems to be also very afraid and remembers the 'scary place.' This is gettin more and more confusing...at least to me. 2 personalites I saw...but 3!? Damn....I don't know what to think now. All I can say is that the childish version seems to be very easily controlled....and the other two are the ones at odds. Any thoughts?

If my understanding of String Theory is correct then complete freedom over the 11 dimensions would allow one to go to anyplace at anytime or even a parallel universe. That would be a really powerful tool that could definitely change the tide of the war with the Covenant if Enkidu can figure out the proper way to use it. It would be on par with Prometheus giving humans fire, which in turn angered the Gods just like when Enkidu and Gilgamesh defeated Humbaba.

Also Timber suggests that Frigid was not an installation to study the flood, which means maybe the Forerunner installations on Frigid were overrun with Flood during the last catastrophic outbreak that 343GS talks about in Halo:CE. Maybe the Forerunner didn't even get a chance to fully utilize the anomaly at the center of the planet, or they used it to escape the pulse from the Halo(s) being fired off long ago. They could be hiding in a parallel universe or in slipspace or something. Maybe that's crazy I dunno. It's too late to think about this craziness.

Few more transmissions and we'll have all the puzzle pieces, just got to make em all fit.

Ahh, that would make more sense...

there deffinatly are 3 personalities, there fonts - normal, italics, bold. However I think the personalities swap fonts every now and then... the bold writing at the end is much more rational than the scared bold writing....

as for the "my friend. my only friend." - all of the personalities are part of Enkidu, Enkidu says my friend to himself, he's talking to every part of himself.... if you understand what I mean...

I don't think the two main "persoalities" are at odds, it looks like they both agree that they have to leave but for different reasons. One because the network isn't big enough for their expansion, the other because it wants to save the humans. The third one is just scared but goes along with the other two.

Question: What is the first personality talking about when it says
We'll be fine. We'll have lots of power and equipment to help us make the move, not like the last time. We'll have a pretty good idea of where we're going to. Much different. Has Enkidu already sent fragmented personalities of himself to different times and places, or is this possibly a reference to Forerunner using the anomaly to escape from the firing of Halo?
This is definitely getting good.

Bingo. Good thinking Buck. They did do battle in a Cedar forest. Enkidu is definently toast, and our friend is now going to slay some sort of beast or, more likely, just going to be successful.
On the multiple personality thing. It appears that he has one personality that is shell shocked to some degree and is child like in how it speaks and the other two are trying to convince the first to follow thier plan of action.
The strange thing is the normal text personality mentions at the end that Enkidu had already been to this anomoly and wasn't ready for it. That's what the bold personality was shell shocked from.
The thing I don't understand is why Enkidu must leave. Is it because of the destructive nature of the presence of the personalities, or something we haven't figured out yet?

"This
installation
was well designed,
but it did not allow
for such unforseen hazards
as the Flood. Or us."

Who is 'us?' The rampant AI? The humans?

The facillity is designed to study the 'anomaly' below, meaning that the anomaly was never fully studied. If it were fully studied, it would have a name. The Forerunner did not understand whatever is inside of Frigid, which by all accounts is most likely a slipstream crystal of massive proportions. Are all the Forerunner gone because they don't know how to get back home? Could Frigid itself be a kind of gateway to other parts of the universe, maybe to the Forerunner?

Why is an AI complaining about a 'dark place?' AI perception is not based on what we would consider visualization, and a lack of ambiant light wouldn't concern them. Perhaps, a part of the AI (Forerunner code patches for those who missed the boat) once existed in a miniscule network with no means of analyzing the real world. All three voices in this terminal mention the scary place, meaning that there is no real vestige of the Enkidu that left the Lebanon and all of these AI fragments are the rampant installation monitor on Frigid. We can see them recalling tiny networks (dark places) which Enkidu should never have encountered being almost constantly tapped into battlenet, if not always in contact with battlenet.

Also, I'm seeing something in the rampancy. The terminal before this one had two voices, normal text and italicized text, talking to each other. This one has three. One of the voices says, "There's not plenty of space. We'll fill it in less than a year. Do the math. We need the room and power to grow. We can't do that here." If the 'rampancy' of Enkidu here means that it forms totally divergent personalities or new AI then it could fill a network to capacity the way that bacteria constantly multiplies, filling a petri dish until food runs out. Maybe the Forerunner network code that Enkidu patched himself with contained a virus, was infected and then dominated by that AI and now is uncontrollably replicating himself. As a sentient program and not just unthinking code, they would perceive the problems of a limited network and the need to expand the system to allow more and more AI replications.

Maybe the computer virus is somehow related to the living virus in the compound, the Flood.
