Righty, I like Noir's theory a lot, looks to be the most promising so far, but Tartarus has a good point. Are we just to disreguard all the other references? Of course not! Have we ever known Bungie to be so simple in a story line as to only reference one thing? NO!

Thank you very much, and I agree that all I did was get the basic outline of the story. The details need to be fleshed out still. Details like what happened to Enkidu, who is John Doe, why are they there, what is the anomaly, etc.
Frigid fitting a Halo around it... interesting. Yes, the pasma shots do sound like a way to transfer something, perhaps energy? Frigid could supply power for one of the Forerunner' Ring Fortresses to do something, after all this anomaly is putting out huge amounts of power acording to Enkidu, and it would finally be an explanation for the plasma gun shot thingies on Halo.
On Halo, the level of the game, we see the blue beam towers. What's special about the level Halo when compared to all the other levels of the game? First is that the blue beam towers don't seem to be connected, in any useful way, to any other facilities. The core things that are destroyed by Master Chief to keep Halo from being able to fire were near the Control Room, the facility that studied the Flood was nearby the Library that held the Index (at least, that's the feeling I got), etc. But the blue beam towers on Halo are independent, leading me to believe they are meant for something completely else. On Halo, Cortana makes the remark about how much flora there is. On Frigid, Enkidu mentions that around the tower, oxygen levels are higher. Because of the independent nature of the facility, the tie in to plant life and oxygen, it is my belief that the blue beam towers are how the Forerunner maintained ecosystems so that they could survive. Halo is artificial and would need to have an artificially controlled environment, Frigid is inhospitable and would thus require an artificially maintained environment for the Forerunner to live there. But I could be wrong.

Unrelated to the above, does anyone else find the timing of the Enkidu terminals odd? The ending of the story seems to coincide with E3, roughly. We've all waited patiently for Halo 2, maybe Bungie was concerned the waiting would make us stray and used the terminals to draw us back in. Many of the terminals have fanfiction in the meta tags, and people have suggested that was meant to draw in fans, so maybe this story doesn't have much of anything to do with the storyline of the Haloverse but is just there to bring people into it (new fans finding a compelling mystery or old fans returning to that mode of thought after playing too much other stuff). Just an idea.

i just noticed something: In the terminal "Oh Manny, Pad Me, Hunh?" the first letters in each line spell "Is thErE aNOTHEr?" What the heck does that mean/signify?

Great idea Halo Addict, that would be quite a good plot twist - Dr. Halsey shows up and we finally know whare she and Kelly when. Also, is there another could be refering to all of Enkidu's personalities? Perhaps hinting at the third we just now see in this most recent terminal? (Timber)

A thought on how JD is going to have something stolen from him... mabe when the junction box is connected, Enkidu sends JD and friends off the planet to somewhare, then gets rid of the covenant, leaving the anomaly to himself. That would explain how it could be stolen, and on top of that, E could use it to obtain complete freedom, ie go to heaven or whatever. Don't forget that in one of the posts, it is mentioned by one of E's alternate personalities 'they attempt to follow on our coat tails to heaven' of the Covenant. So mabe this is why the Forerunner dissapeared? they obtained complete freedom, which they refer to as heaven? Just another thought.

See folks, I can use colors too...Ooh pretty colors...I likes them...Ooh, pretty colors...

....

Wait, what was I saying? Forget it. [/End Transmission]

That's a cool theory. And it's almost exactly like in Morrowind. DIVINE METAPHYSICS, it's called. Basically, the Dwemer race used Kernigs Tools on the Heart of Loklan. (No you fools, I'm not talking about that. It's the word word Lok-lan. Although I understand why it would need to be blocked...) The idea was to turn them into divine beings. But of course, they underestimated the power of the Heart, and ended up phasing into a different plane of existence (heaven, or hell, or something in between). The point is that something simillar could of happened to the forerunners. They could have stumbled on an anonomly at the center of Frigid. And so they reaserch it, study it, and so on and so forth. Then finally, one say, they think they have enough know-how to use it to their advantage, become living gods (worked for Vivec, Almalexia, and Sotha Sil, just not the Dwemer). However, something goes terribly wrong and POOF! The forerunners are gone. I mean, evidence does suggest that they just dissapeared. Forerunner structures we have enountered have been totally intact. I figure if they had been killed off any other way, all those buildings would have had been ransacked and destroyed. And the flood killing them doesn't exactly make any sense, since they probably had thousands of worlds. Even coming close to killing everything would be extremely unlikely.

Umm, two things GS Destroy.

First, your theory that JD is one of the newer chiefs fits in nicely, except for the fact that the next generation Spartans aren't mentioned anywhere in the books, save where they said that they're training them. At the end of FoR, when the Spartans are being briefed, the MC mentions that he had never met a next gen Spartan. It doesn't quite seem likely that the MC, during all his missions, would never have encountered a next gen Spartan.

Second, the Timber! terminal looked to me more like a mushroom cloud. It could be a tree, I'm not discounting or arguing that (after all, the name of the terminal is Timber!).

one last note from previous cortanata letters.. again she speaks of sharing room with another AI.. and more importantly, perhaps, about finding tech.

That was surprisingly easy. Pretty lax security around here, for all the talk. They will
be helplessly chasing me around their nodes for the next millenium at least. At least
there will be some joy in tormenting this other entity that seems quite "trapped" in
their excuse for a network. Although, for some reason, it does seem to have an obsessive
preoccupation with my mother. Strange.

I think that the AI that Cortana is refering to is the Disembodied Soul that used to answer questions about Bungie and its games on the old site. It would often insult your mother if it didn't like your question. I'm sure that some of you people that have been around the Bungie site for a while remember the soul. They really should bring him back to life.

GREAT job Tammo1! Some extra connections now:

Gilgamesh, after Enkidu died, goes on a search for a mortal dude who attained immortality by worshipping and listening to the gods and following their instructions.

Does this in any way sound like... hold your breath...

you intrude in my domain. the nether realms are not for you.
...
nor are the heavens. the power is great down there. almost limitless.
...
parvenus! latecomers! they seek to ride to heaven on my coat-tails.
...
mortals can't be trusted. i don't trust them. they all want what i have.

A connection anyone? Perhaps the Foreruners are this 'immortal man' or have an artifact that grants immortality? I'll leave it to you.

Furthermore, if this is the case, then perhaps this is in fact a trap, as someone suggested earlier, and the sane side of Enkidu will save JD just before death, so he can continue on, and low and behold, what should then stand ahead of him but..... you guessed it! This artifact of unimaginable power!!! First off, when combined with Tammo1's theory, this fits perfectly the Gilgamesh/Enkidu myth, and it would also fit what is happening perfectly, including that it sounds plausible. I think we have a winner!

YAY! A WINNER! as long as this was really written by bungie.......

EDIT-

We like references. We like embedded hints.

Notice that there aren't just a series of terminal, that they've been broken up into sections. Why? Some have speculated that the three non-prologue sections mark the progression of rampancy. We then dig through meta-tags and obscure literary references to find hidden meanings to the terminals. It's more simple than we dared to think.

The Epic of Gilgamesh is broken up into tablets. No real reason. Arbitrary chapter breaks. I thought it was strange how if the sections of the Enkidu Terminals were descriptions of the stages of rampancy that different stages would take different lengths of time. It should be a steady progression. The trickiness of the author was right there. The number of terminals of each section refer to a different tablet of the Epic of Gilgamesh.

The prologue should have only three terminals by the end of the story, so refers to Tablet 3. Section 1 has 7, Section 2 has 6 and by the end of the story Section 3 should have 11. You can go here http://www.wsu.edu/~dee/MESO/GILG.HTM to read the same summaries I did.
Even briefer than that site, I will describe the action as it relates to the Enkidu Terminals.
Gilgamesh (John Doe) feels like sitting around Uruk (Reach) is making him soft and wants to go out and do something. So, he decides to travel to the Cedar Forest to kill Humbaba the demon (travel to different starsystems to assassinate a Prophet, maybe). The city elders try to talk him down but reluctantly agree and demand that Enkidu protect him (the UNSC command reluctantly decide to allow John Doe's mission and pair him with Enkidu for better tactical chances). {Tablet 3/Prologue} Enkidu contracts a nasty illness and slowly dies while having dreams and visions of Hell (Enkidu patches himself with Forerunner code, contracts a virus and is slowly 'killed.') {Tablet 7/"Waking Up Is Hard To Do"} Gilgamesh angers the gods, whom vow to release the dead from Hell, cause great tremors, etc. but Gilgamesh still fights on (The Flood are released, the Covenant ships crash when they try to leave causing tremors, John Doe survives it all and pushes on). {Tablet 6/Appettitie For Destruction} Then, Gilgamesh realizes he's talking with Utnapishtim, the man-immortal, and asks for the "knowledge hidden from humanity." Utnapishtim puts him through trials and then sends him to the bottom of the ocean to find a plant, which is then eaten by a snake while Gilgamesh rested, and Gilgamesh goes home (John Doe had to climb to the surface, fight through countless enemies, survive the cold, etc. Now, Enkidu is sending him to the bottom of the Forerunner facility to find an object of limitless power. JD will lose this object to somebody, perhaps the Covenant, and then go home.). {Tablet 11/Credo In Un Dio Crudel}

ANOTHER WINNER SOMEONE GIVE US THE LAST FEW TERMINALS SO WE KNOW FOR SURE PLS

Okay, I just found something very interesting about the epic of Gilgamesh. Someone posted about the eleven tablets of the epic, Noir I think, anyway it was a very good post but made me curious. I found a lesser known twelfth tablet that is not typically included with the other eleven because it is viewed as a sequel to the actual story, but it is very relevant to this story. The twelfth tablet tells a story about Enkidu travelling to the depths of Hell(the scary, dark place) and being trapped there. He is allowed by Nergal to come back to earth to briefly speak with Gilgamesh and tell him how to descend halfway into Hell, in the bowels of the earth(Frigid). Something really crazy at the center of Frigid I think because it is equivalent to Hell, it's definitely a parallel between the epic and the Enkidu transmissions because Enkidu is leading JD down to the junction box(halfway to Hell baby).

Just in case you wanted to know. Gilgamesh wanted to know how to descend into Hell because there is some item there that he wants to recover. Maybe something to do with immortality.

I found this story at http://www.piney.com/Gil12.html

What do you guys/gals think?

Edit - maybe what Gilgamesh/JD wants to recover is the power of the anomaly(possibly what ONI sent him to find out about) and he has to travel through the void in Frigid(Hell) to get it, and Enkidu(in his rampant glory) is his guide just like the epic. That just might fit.

This twelfth tablet could explain why one of the personalities refers to "the last time" being the last time they journeyed down in the bowels of Frigid(HELL) and have come back, now leading Gilgamesh/JD down there to recover the artifact. Which is why that personality also says they will have more equipment and power to make the move and a better idea of where they're going. JD is walking into some crazy stuff and don't even know it.

Bobtomatoe - You're a Marathoner so correct me if any of this is wrong. When Durandal and Tycho? or Thoth?(I can't remember the exact name) merged in Infinity did he refer to himself as Durandal anymore? I thought that he did not, which leads me to believe there is no other A.I. here other than Enkidu because he stills calls himself that. I was thinking this was just fragmented "personalities" speaking not seperate A.I.s. Also, wasn't there a century intentionally left blank in the Marathon timeline where the events of Halo conveniently fit. I know they said that it was seperate universes but if this artifact is as powerful as it seems could the two universes be linked at this point inside Frigid. Some kind of black hole/white hole deal. Let me know what you think.

Okay! That was what Enkidu was rambling about. All three of him? *lol* Since he's still an AI under all that skitzo, he (the original AI one) is probably afraid of that "dark place" because he thinks he's the Enkidu. For example: Wellsley thought he was Wellington. So, because of that, I don't think he was really in any type of dark place.

Also, I've noticed, perhaps wrongly, that when an AI chooses their personality/name, it seems they receive the memories, too. Maybe it's just the history, but it does seem, to me at least, that the AI gets their "candidate's" emotions, too. Any thoughts? ;D

that would be interesting it if it was true.. i simply think that JD is another spartan.. but hey, maybe your right. that would be nice.

and when durandal merged with thoth (The ancient s'pht AI) in infinity, yeah, it sorta refered its self as durandal.. check out the final terms on the story page.

http://marathon.bungie.org/story/

also, technically, you could fit the marathon arriving at tau ceti/ first events at the time (i think - ill need to re-read the time line on the story page).

at one time i thought that HALO was an extension of the story in a small way - but according to bungie, they are in two seperate "universes."

i mean, you have the pfhor - who would have come across the covenant sooner that humans.. i dunno..

many of us marathoners would die, though, to have marathon put onto a 3d fps game.. or at least have some marathon multiplayer maps..

personally, i would love to have a redenition of marathon (complete with terminals).. or maybe a new story within the marathon universe.

i will say this, though. i am much more happy with HALO and the cyborg returning to earth. in marathon infinity you are left on a yyaro station with a star about to nova. lol. (well, supposedly the station contained it, i think.

of course in the end - durandal was trying to achieve imortality by escaping the closure of the universe. the 11 dimensions would have allowed him to do that.

i hope to see some terms tomorrow.

That would certainly be a good way to bring back Bungie of old to the world of now, flush with fans of Halo. But, we all know that The MC would kick that guy's ass.

In reference to a 12th tablet, knowing the entire Gilgamesh epic would of couse help us, but I think that the sections of the Enkidu terminals reference specific tablets to get a basic plotline, not actually determine the details of the story. So, a 12th tablet showing Enkidu in Hell or whatever is kind of interesting and all, but I think unrelated except for in a very tangental way.

it cannot be the mark iv cyborg from marathon.

if you check the time line from marathon: http://marathon.bungie.org/story/maratime.html

you can see that the marathon was launched in 2472. Now it is possible when you look at this for the two universes to exsist in a small way - but by the time the marathon arrives at tau ceti - earth would have FTL drives..

so i guess you could merge the two in - maybe.

but the guy is definitely not the security officer on marathon.. unless somehow he was allowed to go back in time with the 11 dimensions. (does it allow for time travel/bending of the universe?)

Jason: Absolutely. Two pieces of code! There was a piece of ascii art checked in on Saturday that was mine, too.

Now, if your one of the long term residents of this thread, you will remember that around page 3 or so we found one of the meta keywords to be 'ascii art'. A coincidence? I donno, but I don know that when your dealing with Bungie, coincidences are rare. Just something for you to chew on.

Now, I'll see you tomorrow afternoon - I'm going to bed, I'm on the same time as the forum is (GMT -8) so it's gettin late for a week night. How's this post for colors??? ;-)

Edit: NICE!!! They have the color Salmon!!! Check out the first color in the post!!! AND TAN!!!

I know that this is from an old terminal. And it has probably already been said. But something someone posted reminded me of it. Some one posted about Halo fitting around Frigid. And Tatarus said that the blue energy shooting across Halo could connect with some in Frigid. That reminded me of something noted in the terminal "Whether Forecast". In the middle it says, "We are exploring the grounds of [a] large building, apparently very ol[d]. It is shaped like a very broad, split arrow head pointin[g]_ into the sky with a diamond-shaped gap in the face. It seems to ha[garbled]. When I heard that I pictured the beacons in Halo that shot the blue plasma across the middle of Halo. It very well could have something to do with that.
Agian, I am sorry if this has already been mentioned. I just had to say it.

I was rereading FS, and i remembered that someone was talking about a poem or song or something about the Spartans and thier mindset, and i found this on Pg 60, just after locklear killed the engineer. From First Strike
The Chief tended to agree with Locklear's threat analysis of the Covenant: when in doubt, kill. still, he found the young marine's actions unnecessary...... and a little sloppy

And what if JD is a Spartan 3? Aren't Ackersons Clones, and since they're an ONI/Ackerson Black Op, they never wear armor? (on page 129 in FS, it says one of the folders in Ackerson's files is labeled S-III........ Spartan 3?)

Thoughts, anyone? (Someone help me with colors pls)

My friend, you would not tell with ſuch high zeſt

Well, the name "Frigid" is short and functional, like Reach, Basis, Threshold and Harvest - all planets in the halo universe.

I'm personally leaning towards this being Bungie rather than fan-made. There is a lot of depth in each entry, and it manages to tie into what we know of Halo 1 and 2, and remain consistent. If it is a fan-fic, it is VERY well done. I'd buy the guy who made it a coffee no doubt.

Whoops... I was responding to something on page 6 saying how "Frigid" seemed a somewhat amateurish name, not realising there were almost 70 pages... Oh well, maybe this still needs to be said.
