Ich bin Reptar!

If you've played Grand Theft Auto, then this game should be similar...

When you play as the Rookie, you are trying to find clues and evidence of what has happened to your squad members. That is the free roam environment. In this free roam, you find different items that trigger a flashback of what happened. You play through the flashback and these are the specific missions. Once the flashback is over, it's back to free roam. An example of a flashback is shown at E3 where Dutch arms some detonators on a bridge and blows it up. The actual flashback is longer but they cut it down for E3. This flashback is triggered by finding what's left of a detonator. And there you go.

Judging by his username, I think we can safely assume that this guy has played GTA IV.

My troll sense is tingling.

You play as the rookie, going around the city in an open hub-world. Some bits are cut off at first but then you gain access to everything. It doesn't matter which order you do the missions in, it's kind of like the Super Mario games.

How? Because Arthas says so.
