Lets just say IF Reach happens to have some kind of squad oriented gameplay, would it be too much to ask that it be implemented somehow into multiplayer? This would obviously be given it's own mode, and own play-style.
The premise would be simple, give each player two smart AI controlled spartan squadmates (or elite, whichever you choose). You would go about doing battle with squads of the opposing side.
The squad controls would also be kept simple:
Up on the D-pad: Change the way they seek out opponents. Whenever you press up on the D-pad, the squadmates say something to you, like Weapons free, and search-and-destroy, and Holding until you fire, sir!
Left on the D-pad: Squad member 1, go here, or attack this.
Right on the D-pad: Squad member 2, go here, or attack this.
Down on the D-pad: Regroup on you.
These controls could also be combo-ed. For example: Comboing Holding fire and movement. Tell one of your squadmates to go to a higher vantage point on your enemy. Since he is set to holding fire, he won't shoot at the enemies that he now has a vantage point on, and can plainly see. You and your remaining Squadmate move closer, hopefully not seen yet.
You suddenly spot an enemy moving away from the rest of his group. You tell you squadmate in the vantage point to attack him, but he still holds fire, and instead says something like,"yes sir, ready sir." You and you remaining teamate burst out of cover making all hell break loose. The lone enemy is quickly taken out by your vantage man, and you and your other squadmate are taking people out left and right from the suprise attack.
But you suddenly take note of your vantage squadmate's shields being quickly sapped away by something. You look over in his direction and see him being killed by two of the enemy player's AI teamates, coordinating their fire on a single opponent. Your vantage man is killed, and has a nice cinematic death, sliding off of the rock face, and falling to the ground.
You look at you own shields, and half of them are immediately, permanantly (for that life) taken from you. This is a result from your teammate dying.
Alright, enough of that, I got a bit carried away. Your shields may not be hindered so much, but something has to be implemented to give you and incentitive to keep your squadmates alive.
You could also customize the look of your squadmates, and give them service tags, and names. Bungie.net could also keep track of each squadmate's kills and random stuff too!
All in all, I think that this could be a good and ambitious step for the Halo franchise.
