Although I'm taking this slightly out of context, I think that the simple fact that we pretty much know how the events of Reach play out, that we might be justified in expecting an experience far darker than the other games.
During Halo 3's development ViDocs and its marketing months before release, it was constantly stated that Halo 3 was going to be darker than the previous two games. Some interpreted this as significantly more gore and blood. Others interpreted this as a more gritty experience that might highlight the brutality of the Covenant (or contrarily Humanity). At one point, we watched an Elite carve a Brute's feet off with an Energy sword, leap at its chest and plunge it deeply into its ribcage. We saw a Brute lift a human into the air and smash him on the spikes of his Spiker, etc.
I don't recall ever really seeing these brutal moments in the Halo games, and it was somewhat disappointing.
I think that the simple atmosphere of devastation that Reach tends to hold may possibly foreshadow the kinds of things we might be seeing. I honestly believe that this will be a darker atmosphere in which we watch Humanity not just fall against the Covenant, but be slaughtered and murdered brutally by its enemies.
The gore I don't much care about, so long as entrails aren't painting my television screen. More so, I'm hoping that we see the viciousness and hate come through into the Covenant's actions this time around... and the same for Humanity.
