Subject: Halo: Reach requirements - a sensible wishlist

I know there has been a plethora of wish lists for Halo: Reach, but this is the one for serious suggestions and not fantasies of needler super-guns or flame-painted Warthogs.

Only the realistic need apply

1. Outstanding graphics.
I know all of the other Halo games have been great in graphical appearance but I expect this one to be at the pinnicle and limit of 360 performance.

2. CGI Cut Scenes.
I know some with not agree with this one but the scenes from Halo Wars were visually striking and graphically better than the ones from the other Halo games. Although the cut scenes in Halo Wars were less fluidic than the other Halo games it did allow you to see the Halo universe in pristine clarity and detail.

3. Loosen the linear constraints.
Halo CE gave me a feeling of being able to explore anywhere on the Halo construct but I think the other two Halo games were less explorative in nature. Halo 3, in particular, was very restrictive in the route that you could take to your next location, but this may have been a pay off due to the inclusion of the theatre mode.
If Bungie have to sacrifice the theatre mode from Halo: Reach in order to gives us a more realistic and less restrictive environment then I won't be complaining. Although, I think some may not agree.

4. Give us character.
I know a few folk will say this suggestion is bordering on heresy but i think that if John is indeed in Halo: Reach and so are the other Spartans that we are familiar with from the novels then I'd like to see more charcter interaction between the Spartans. In otherwords, I'd like to see evidence of the bond between the Spartans.

Suggestions...

Tank beats Ghost!
Tank beats Hunters!
Tank beats Everything!!!

Fair shout.
The cut-scenes from Halo Wars were much better than the ones from Halo 1, 2 & 3, though people will probably say "It's not Bungie blah blah" but they have seen to give us better cutscenes as seen with the opening to ODST.
Seems that ODST is paving the way for what we could see in Reach, better graphical cutscenes, a relatively large map to explore, and the relationships between the ODST's (also seen in the intro).

I am of an open mind and I am willing to hear criticism. Also: That's stupid and you're stupid.

They can't make the cut-scenes look graphically better than the game play for a game like Halo: Reach.

HaloWars was an RTS with no real connection from the game play to the cut-scenes other than its story. Halo 3 was a direct connection as you, yourself were there to make the cutscene. It just wouldn't make sense to go from one look to a better look then back to the earlier look.

Look at Halo: ODST cut scenes in that are CGI.

finally someone with a decent wishlist and no convoluted crap. but i dont get it. arnt the cutscenes already cgi?

I believe it uses the game to make the cut-scenes in ODST as Halo 3 did with it's cut-scenes.

Technically they are but the one's from Halo 1,2 & 3 use the same character models that are used in gameplay instead of a specifically crafted scene. Basically, in Halo 3 Bungie were using a varient of the theatre mode.

This may seem a little outlandish but bare with me.
customizable weapons/different variants of the same weapons for example like the standard smg and the silenced odst smg. as you have probably noticed the halo games have been getting more mature and more realistic as time goes on so it would be understandable if they had a larger variety of weapons and equipment at there disposal. plus the unsc is supposed to be a huge military force so it only stands to reason they would have a large and expansive and highly specialized arsenal. plus more variants of vehicles and perhaps some boats and oh please god a pelican! tell me what you think.

What do you mean by mature ? Halo 3 felt like it could have been given the T rating.

I think he means the type and nature of weapons that have been introduced.

I think the boat idea could be dropped and although a lot of us, me included, want to fly a Pelican i'm not sure how this could be introduced into the gameplay.

it totally disagree, even though halo wars has brilliant cinematics it is not in game, i love it how in halo 3 when i have caused tons of carnage and death that when the cinematic starts i can see all that, i mean it would be cool to have some cgi ones in non-play areas such as space showing the covenant fleet attacking earth for example but for the game i would much rather the original halo cinematics, and on the subject of making it feel more open like halo one i agree but i would also like them to keep the like small passage ways and stuff so sometimes u can feel closed in and alone like the original halo!!

I hope the campaign has a way like it did in CE. You could approach the enemy from different angles and stuff. You could get behind them and start picking them off with a sniper, then go from another angle and finish them with the magnum.

I don't really care about improved graphics, i'd rather have a more interesting game, a faster load time, and less lag; but if they bring up the graphics a lot I don't know if these will be possible (except maybe a more interesting game).

  • 07.21.2009 8:12 AM PDT

I feel naked with this open, quick, close the damn thing before I get a cold...

I found the campaign missions throughout the three games to be repeated versions of each other, especially the flood filled missions. Hopefully the flood is completely done away with in Reach. Just a little variation would be nice.

While CGI would be nice, I'm personally not fussed and CGI cutscenes don't make or break a game. (then again I watched the Halo Wars ones *lots* of times:P)

Like your list, good to see some sensible discussion when it comes to wishlists.

  • 07.21.2009 8:16 AM PDT

I disagree with number two. Totally. Cut scenes in the game engine make you feel like you're experiencing the cut scene rather than watching it. Halo Wars looked pretty, but didn't inspire the same feelings as the trilogy.

  • 07.21.2009 8:20 AM PDT

I prefer in game cut scenes. BTW it saves more memory, it looks more like the actual game, and the background objects that you moved during gameplay and the weapon your we're wielding in-game is what will be in the cut scene.

The beginning ODST cut-scene is in the game engine...

Announcement trailers don't count.

About me: I am a vicious wolf of a man.

But really am sweet at heart. =)

Here is my wishlist.

1: Take away the BR and bring back the H1 Magnum but keep the H3 AR

2:Make Infinity Ward and their CoD fanboys cry.

I'd love to be a 10 year old and tell my mom I'm going on an adventure out into the world catching Pokemon, with her full support. Never mind the fact that there are rapists, criminals, and murders out there, or the fact that I may get killed by a Pokemon.

Luckily I have Pikachu.

We don't need CGI Cutscenes, let alone they would take up too much space on the disc. Halo Wars used CGI cutscenes only becuase the ingame graphics engine doesn't look good for any of those scenes.

by mature i mean a bit more gore but not over the top like gow. and with weapons i was thinking different types of rifles and snipers and maybe some customizable weapons to a degree. and a combat knife would be a good thing ,also has anyone thought about city gameplay as in maybe driving some civilian vehicles or using some civilian weapons?

if you watch this about half way in they show some animations of brutes that i assume were cut due to the graphical nature as they seem a bit to much for a bbfc cert 15 so maybe bungie will lash out and give this a more serious twist as this would take the edge of the new gameplay if you dont wanna watch it it basically shows a brute pull a marines arms off and then a marine getting totaled by a hammer and then a marine being crushed onto a wall as well as a brute kicking the crap out of a human then it shows an elite chop a brutes legs of and stab him in the face. m for mature anyone? plus i would totally love to stab a brute grunt or jackal in the face

Some valid and interesting points by all.

With the CGI cut scenes I was simply putting out the idea to enhance the visual aspect of the game. The character model sequences do keep you involved more than the specifically created version, but as long as the graphics have improved, as they always should in game development, then I'll be more than happy with the result.

The gameplay is one of the major strong points of Halo along with the storyline so I don't really think that these need to be improved all that much. Perhaps less mystery and enigma this time, though, and more hard facts. The gameplay is great but as long as Bungie try to reduce the glitches and the lag aspect then all should be well.

I'm not really too fussed about the demands for weapons. Chances are that Bungie will return to the old favourites from CE, such as the original assault rifle and the scoped magnum.
As it will be earlier in the war than CE, but only just, I would imagine Halo: Reach will feature a greater variety of vehicles. Some of the one's that featured in Halo Wars could be considered. After all, we'll be doing most of the fighting on Reach, a military strong point for the UNSC. So I would imagine there would be much to choose from in terms of weapons and vehicles.

So, from this I think we can draw a number of popular choices:

A variety of weapons, possibly with more focus on the assault rifle.

Well crafted cut scenes by all standards.

A greater variety of vehicles

A more realistic, grim and desperate atmosphere in the game.

A good variation between close quarter and open field combat. fighting in built up areas, open plains, trenches etc... without being repetative or restrictive in the choice of route.

I'm sure more of you out there have even more to say. If you can find a valid reason for including the Pelican or Spirit dropship then put it in here.

The reason Combat Evolved had a small variety of weapons was due to the fact that part of the Pillar of Autumn got blasted away before they jumped, leaving standard "Infantryman" weapons. Battle Rifles, Flamethrowers, SMGs, all of them were present at Reach.

As for my wishlist, I would love to see the game from a Covenant aspect again. However, seeing as how this time the two aspects will not tie together as they did in Halo 2, I think there should be two different campaigns, a UNSC one and a Covenant one.

Some levels in Low, or possibly Zero G would be great. The way the Zero G one could work is that you're inside, but there's been a pressure leak so everything is floating around; you have to fire your weapon or melee to move around.

Halo 3 was effectively about revenge. The Covenant were running with their metaphoric tail between their legs, and you went to hunt them down. In other words, it sucked. Sure, it was nice being on the winning team, but I missed the way in Combat Evolved that it seemed Humanity was losing badly, and we, as the last, greatest hope for humanity, had to turn the tide of the battle. And we did, we destroyed Halo, and at the end of the game, we felt like we'd overcome the odds and made a difference. This needs to be in Reach, somehow, someway.

They shouldn't just ditch the idea of playing as an ODST after Halo 3: ODST. It's a great idea they have; we're weaker, but we have specialised equipment to make up for that. In Reach, we should play as both Spartans and ODSTs. Perhaps this was Bungie's plan all along. Halo 3: ODST could just be a test to see if it works.

Those are just a few of my ideas, I'll contribute a bit more to this thread later.
