The Type 2 anti-personel frag grenade AKA The Brute Spike Grenade is one of the many weapons scattered across Halo 3's landscapes.

...And yet it is the least used grenade in matchmaking, behind the flame grenade, which would certainetly be used more than the spike grenade if they were introduced into playlists.

Why? Why do people hate the spike grenade so? If you notice, on none of the new maps have spike grenades, possibly because people hated them so much. When they redid Epitaph to Epilogue, they replaced all the spike grenades with plasma grenades. Its a shame really, because (in my horrible opinion) some of the maps would play much better with spike grenades instead of plasma grenades.

For example, many people have problems killing warthogs on Standoff. The easiest way to do it is to stick them with a plasma, but there are a few problems with this:
1) It doesn't always kill them.
2) It doesn't always flip them or even alter the course so further grenades can kill them.

And thus, the warthog continues it's spree, and me and my team mates are very sad.

With spike grenades, it doesn't matter where you stick the other vehicle, they die instantly, making it better for infantry major-vehicle minor maps.

In Reach, I would like to see the spike grenade be used more and actually be something else than a plasma grenade that doesn't have splash damage in a radius. Whats the major reason you guys avoid them? What could be done to make it so you would use such a grenade instead of a plasma grenade? Its something I've been thinking about for a while, so I want to hear what you guys think about the spike grenade and how it could be balanced into a new role.

Also, maybe have a bigger splash for the spike grenade. Usually the shrapnel just explodes outward and away from the handle of the grenade. Make it explode in all directions maybe?

It's simply too weak. The spread of the spikes is immense, which is what makes the spike grenades kill a warthog when stuck, but nothing else, when stuck on the wall near a player.

I've once killed a player by sticking the spike grenade to the wall beside him. But he was incredibly close to it. If the spread of the spikes wasn't so damn big, you would get more kills. I frankly like the style of the grenade, but it's pretty useless for other then directly sticking a target.

I was thinking since it is supposed to fill an anti-vehicle and defensive purpous, that perhaps the spike grenade stays the same, but it's method of exploding should change?

When you throw it, it takes either three or two seconds to explode after hitting something or until something walks within the kill zone to detonate.

That way, if you had an attacker chasing you, you could turn around, stick it onto a wall, and force the attacker to shoot the grenade himself or attempt to charge through the shrapnel to continue to pursue you. Much more of a defensive role than it already is, eh?

Agreed. Make it more of a mine on a wall style, and include it in levels with the plasma grenades. It would add more variety first of all.

Personally i just don't want to see any trace of the brutes in this game. I've grown extremely tired of them at this point. The elites were much more interesting and more importantly difficult by far. The brute grenade has always been my least favorite, and despite the changes that might be made i don't think that will change.

Manual Destruction is a no-go in my opinion. Would be far too easy for someone to get a shotgun, grab the spike grenades, and set them up so that they help him weaken his opponents as he camps.

Any other thoughts?

Remove them. Four grenades is a bit much. I'd rather see two grenade types with four each or three grenade types with three each. I'd say a possible third grenade would be the firebombs made so they don't lag. The spike grenades essentially do the same job as plasma grenades so they aren't needed. The firebombs are unique.

I like the ideas you have. Either make them do more damage for anti vehicle purpose , or temporary proximity mines (But make them more like equipment than grenades. Like a duo of them have 2 spawns on a medium sized map like ghost town.)

I say remove them and the flame grenades, and let us hold 4 frags and 4 plasmas again... maybe edit the frags so that they release a little shrapnel which multiplies the damage in enclosed areas, and give the plasmas an EMP burst.

Iagree Spike grenades should be more powerful. Increase the splash damage on them. I love the spike grenades because it is a cool concept but i die a little inside everytime I throw one and realize that along with having to adjust to the different throwing arc a spike grenade needs to be succesful it also neverkills anyone unless its a stick.

The way I would want to see a new version of the spike grenade..

You would throw it onto a wall, it attaches itself and explodes after about 1.5 seconds. The cone would be larger, but less spikes are shot out. After they stop ricocheting or are stuck into a wall or are just simply going into air, they would explode for minor damage. Each would take out 1/4 of your shield maybe? Would be very useful for softening up a room, or plant a grenade to the ground to get a banshee in the air?
