Well we don't know if its newer. They were at Alpha Halo, we just never saw them (one picks up Halfjaw in the Halo Graphic Novel). And... because we associate Phantoms with Brutes since they are the primary enemy in H2 and H3. And Spirits with Elites since they are the primary enemy in H1.

That shouldn't matter. In halo reach they're still on the same side.

I'd say randomizing it would be best, seeing as you wouldn't know what you were about to fight. Also, some Elites and Brutes coming out of the same dropship would be awesome.

Randomizing it doesn't make sense. It doesn't take into account where either type of ship came from or how it's being used. It also forgets one major fact, which is that the Covenant has always made a point of keeping the Brutes and Elites separated.

The Covenant, a faction well known for breaking everything down into hierarchies, wouldn't just make two variations of troop transport ships without a purpose. While I'm not saying that either the Spirit or the Phantom were designed to be used by specific races, I am saying that both ships were designed with very different tasks in mind.

Phantoms, for instance, are clearly equipped with more firepower and larger accommodations, while the design of the Spirit makes it far more challenging of a target for larger ships out in space; however, it also has little to no breathing room on the inside. Phantoms also have multiple entrances, while Spirits are limited to the two folding hatches on either arm of the "U". That would lead me to believe that Spirits were designed for the quick transport of units through the vacuum of space, while Phantoms were tailored for ground deployment.

That isn't to say that the two are interchangeable, but the fact still remains that there has to have been a purpose for designing the two in the way that they were designed. I would rather see them used in specific instances which better inform the player of their intended functionality as opposed to seeing them used interchangeably.

id say both. elites=phantom, brutes=spirit. elites often got the more luxurious and advanced technology at this time.but if it is a mix of elite and brute, then phantom.

Besides both dropships existing, the of type infantry deployed should be by rank, depending on the dropship.

Spirits deploy low to mid ranked covenant infantry, both elites and brutes can be transported/deployed on one Spirit, but seperated into one of the two wings of the spirit dropship.

The Phantom on the other hand, deploys high ranking covenant, and is well known for dropping off Hunters aswell, unlike the Spirit dropship however, it does not transport both, elites and brutes.

Both are capable of transporting any vehicle, but the Spirit has a better advantage at deploying both, armor and infantry at the same time, but the Phantom has better speed, and can quickly transport one wraith, or two ghosts on Reach.

first I think phantoms give a better look to the game than spirits second brute and elite phantoms are diferent colors, so there is separation with phantoms as well as spirits have you ever seen an elite in a blue phantom , besides phatoms are more challenging to fight

Elites only used the green phantoms after they became allies with the Humans. In Halo 2 they used the purple phantom.

I guess I forgot about halo 2...... but still I prefer fighting a phantom over a spirit

This would be a good time to point out that the US Government seriously did consider nuking the moon during the Cold War as a show of force. Project A119.

"A large explosion on the Terminator line would put the sun behind the mushroom cloud, making the explosion visible with the naked eye from Earth."

Then the US decided they'd just send in Neil Armstrong to land on it. Neil Armstrong - the one man on the earth that was considered a suitable replacement for a nuclear missile.

The Phantom wasn't even in use by the Covenant during the Battle of Reach. They replaced the Spirit soon after the destruction of Alpha Halo. If Bungie did that, they would mess a lot of things up. They would have to throw in Spartan lasers, the newer versions of the guns and vehicles, same HUD and shielding system, etc.

At the time of the Battle of Reach the Spartans were still using the Mark V, and the weapons were what would now be outdated. Bungie will have to bring back these older weapons, vehicles, and other things to satisfy the hardcore fans.

I didn't know that in a massive war spanning across a galaxy that a few months time made weapons "outdated."

Both the Phantom and the Spirit were being employed in battle by the Covenant during their assault on Reach. While there's nothing to say that both were in use on Reach itself, both vehicles had been developed and deployed by the Covenant by that point in history.

The only reason you don't see any Phantoms in Halo: Combat Evolved is because there were none on board any of the Covenant ships located near Alpha Halo. That's the same reason there were no Brutes, Drones, Carbines, Battle Rifles, SMGs, etc.

Woot Woot Woot
Sangheili FTW!

imo i always prefered Phantoms over Spirits.
Phantoms looks better and more Covenant.
For instance it can fly in both space vacuum and atmosphere. (at least the Halo2 version)
And it has more firepower for hot zone troop drop, and imo i hate Spirits, they're ugly and that "U" shape is horrible.
So i hope in Reach Phantoms will be there as in H2 and H3.

No they weren't, they were outfitted on Reach with Mark VI litteraly hours before the Covenant arrive, which is why they were in the system at the time of the assult.

No, they were in the Mk V. They got the Mk VI right before the Covenant invaded Earth in Halo 2. They had the Mk IV from 2525 until right before Reach was invaded.
