I theorize that if we are to play spartan's in Halo: Reach, that you will play as a spartan 3, not a spartan 2 like the master chief.
There were only 150 candidates for the spartan 2 project, though only 75 were trained, and only 45 survived (12 being unfit for combat), and their IFF code's were simply "SPARTAN-117" or "SPARTAN-051", with a maximum of "SPARTAN-150".
The spartan 3 project's on the other hand had approximatley 400 candidates for each project(company's ALPHA, BETA and GAMMA), though only 300 were trained for each (except gamma with 330). Also their IFF code's were: eg:
SPARTAN-A044= An example, i could not find an IFF code for ALPHA company
SPARTAN-B292= Tom from BETA company
SPARTAN-G188= Dante from GAMMA company
With a maximum of approximatley 400 for each
So perhaps there is another spartan 3 company that was trained in secret (by ONI for example), and you play as a spartan from this company.
There were plenty of spartan 2's on reach, but their IFF code's did not rise above 150, but the spartan 3's did, also the spartan 3's had letters in their code's.
"SIERRA-259 SPARTAN'S ON THE GROUND"
"SPARTAN-S259 ON THE GROUND" perhap's?
Sorry about the wall, and like i said.... its just a theory.

one slight snag in this.

The spartan 3's didnt come along until about Halo 2.

Other snags that people may pick up on.

the Spartan III program training ground where on Onyx, not Reach.

I think it will probably be based on what everyone else thinks it is and the books about reach.

Although your theory would make for interesting game play, in my opinion anyway. Playing as a spartan III in their unique armour variant would be kind of cool.

yes those are valid points, but Kurt started training spartan 3's in the year 2531 and reach fell in 2552, so there was plenty of time to get a spartan company to reach. although i doubt it would have been kurt training them, that would have been in the books.EDIT* also the spartan 3's were doing missions BEFORE fred, linda, will, kelly and Dr halsey arrived on onyx.

yeah but your also forgetting that the spartan 3 where trained for tactical suicide missions.

reach would have been a suicide mission but there was probably a more strategic target somewhere else.

I think it would be good if Bungie included a training mission as a spartan 3 at the end of reach, setting up for Halo:onyx, may sund lame and i will probably get flamed on the forum boards along the lines of "OMG!!!! BUNGIEZ WoULD nT mke a new gme Seires based On ll da Bks", bu if they where to make Halo: Onyx they could focus on a different style of combat as you would learn how to deal with Guerilla warfare in fighting the sentinels, then how to ration Ammo fighting the covenant near the ark entrance then it would set up for something along the Lines of Halo 4: The Ark where you deal with a rouge section of a forerunner society terrified by the possibility of a new flood infection who now want to fire the remaining Halo's, you'd some how have to stop/convince them not to fire the halo's ad would star master chief.

^im expecting angry angry comments flooding to my inbox soon.

lol i won't flame you, but.. if this company was being trained on Reach in that underground forerunner facility perhap's it would make it a possibilty, and bungie could use some of the things they are using in Halo3: ODST, because of the difference in the armour.

yeah it does sound interesting.

I would like to see what Dr. Hasley was doing on reach beside training spartan 2's. Plus i wouldnt mind exploring the forerunners a bit more.

definitly, it would be cool to explore the forerunners facility, and there has been a forerunner facility in every halo game so far.. so hopefully it'll be in reach, i'm really looking forward to whatever bungie come up with, i'm sure i'll be playing it for month's!! like i have been with all halo games!

sorry for the double post but.. everyone seems to think that you will control the master chief, maybe you do, but in the books his mission at reach was in space with sam and linda.. the other spartans were on the ground defending the generators for the mac guns.. to make an entire game you're going to need more.. and there is the issue of SIERRA-259 (above post).. the story could be told ODST style, jumping from one spartan to the next, doing different missions. but i just can't help but think there will be a twist that bungie have up they're sleave.

I do not appreciate B.Net Group solicitation. If you ignore this and send me an invitation anyway, I will block communications with you.

This is a hugely incorrect misconception that people seem to have about the Spartan-III program. They were not trained in any different fashion than the Spartan-IIs were trained in. It was in fact mentioned that Kurt vastly improved upon the training regimes that the S-IIs had gone through, and on top of that, Kurt, a true blue Spartan with 30 years of actual experience would be able to share his own knowledge with them directly.

The Spartan-IIIs eventually fell on high-strategic opportunity, low survival rate missions, but they were not trained for it. They were trained in the exact same way, minus some improvements, that the original Spartans were.
