Q: Are you left handed, but can't seem to find a game that ever lets you shoot left handed?
A: Maybe Halo: Reach could be that first game to let you do so!

Bungie should create an option to be able to choose which hand you hold/shoot the gun in your hand with (example: picking up say a battle rifle and shooting it with your left hand on the trigger and your body, rather than the usual right hand). I'd like to see this feature because I myself am left handed, and shoot guns in real life left handed, and very used to it that way. Now, I'm not saying that watching a spartan on my screen shoot and hold a weapon right handed is unplayable, but I just think it's more well suited to me, the player.

Also, in Halo's campaign, wasn't the aim of the game to get you to feel like you are Master Chief? Well it's sort of hard to do that when you're forced to play as a character that's right handed when you, yourself are right handed. And if there is no way this could ever be implemented into the campaign, at least try it with multiplayer? You even have a Beta test coming next year! [you could test it then with millions of peoples]

I know that this has never been done before in first person shooter video games [as far as I know] and that probably won't change with this one either, but at least give my idea a chance?

Thoughts?

I would effect game play put your cross hairs on the ground and throw a plasma grenade. It flys to to the right of the cross hairs change it around and it will fly to the left

  • 07.23.2009 4:53 PM PDT

Counter strike had it.

It would be a cool idea, I agree. But it also requires new reload/handling of the gun (lol) animations. For example, to push back the charging handle, the player would have to tilt the gun to the right, seeing as how the gun charging handle is on the left side of the gun.

Here is a mod in Halo: CE showing how a left handed reload would be like.

There is one major set back to making left handed spartans/elites. That set back is that some weapons are indeed designed for right handed use only. The first weapon that comes to mind is the Battle Rifle.

I'm sure there are work arounds to this such as simply mirroring the animations [even though this wouldn't make sense because guns can't magically change they're design] it is just a game though after all, and this could be done only exclusively in multiplayer and not campaign.

Technically, that weapon is for lefty's. The bolt is supposed to be on the same side as the person's dominant hand. That's the way real guns are, and it's something that video games have messed up and caused a lot of confusion on.

Also think about this, would it be easier to pull a bolt back with your dominant hand or your other hand? You are supposed to pull back the bolt with your hand which is on the trigger while the stock rests on your shoulder. Example.

Great point, I didn't even think about using your dominant hand to reload. Thanks for showing me this.

Reach could be a much more tactical halo, peaking around corners anyone? And how can some games have the option to switch but it would take wayyyyyyy too much space for halo? be real

How would it take way too much space exactly?

Finding and honestly deep though on The Flood is like finding an angler fish in the shallows of Lake Dumbass.

Having sex with a girl on her period is like taping a knife to your -blam!- and repeatedly slamming it into a small defenseless furry land creature. But man its good right? Just make sure you soak yourself in bleach afterwards to get out the blood stains and dead half-born child off the back of your thigh.

Unreal Tournament 2003 lets ya use guns left handed.

The thing is, guns are made for right handed people. Especially the military, since making two kind of some guns would be a hassle. Also, they train soldiers and police to hold and shoot them right handed.

I would like to see it though. I know it bugs lefties. When people hold guns in their left hand in games it makes me feel awkward. Like un-natural.

Actually, most modern firearms are designed to be left-hand friendly...just thought I'd let you know that. They train police and soldiers to shoot with their dominant hand, as well as with their non-dominant hand. Being partially ambidexterous, I prefer to shoot with my left hand instead of my right hand, simply because I find the controls on a weapon easier to manipulate with my left hand than my right.

Don't get cocky now!

Dear Lefty,
Back in the day, you would be considered a witch, or some other form of Hellspawn for being left-handed. So the norm was forcing you evil children of Satan to become right-handed.
To conclude, it is actually socially acceptable to ignore you "Lefties" and continue making shooters for us pure right-handers.
Sincerely,
a "Righty"

Dear Anonymous -blam!-,
I hope you're kidding, and if not, way2go with using the mentality of centuries ago in hopes of finding a way to write this topic off. Thank you for your oh-so inspiring and mind changing insight on this topic, I can tell you really put some thought forth before you decided to hit the "reply" button.
Sincerely,

EDIT: Btw, stop trolling.

If you want to see the MC die, play Legendary. If you want to see MC finish the fight, play Halo 3. If you want to see MC finish the fight by dieing, why did you waste six years when you could have done it yourself right now?

Why stop at there? Why hasn't there EVER, in the history of video games, ever been a left handed controller? With A, B, X, Y on the left side of the controller? A controller specifically designed for a lefty? I'm a lefty, very converted righty, and I've tried as hard as I can to adapt to Southpaw controls, and I just can't bring myself to do it. I don't ever want to let go of the movement stick. With Southpaw, you're forced to do this, unless you want to use your left thumb to move and your right to use functions, but then you'd have to let go of the left thumbstick. VERY uncomfortable.

better to be stuck then fragged

I'd love to see Halo to go down this ally, but at the same time it dosent mean crap to me.
Reason is that I am left handed, but it also matter which is your good eye, and i shoot just fine and maybe a little bit better then the people I shot with in ROTC for Rifle Training and i shot comps.

so yea, depends more on your eyes then what hand you shot.

Yeah I agree, I call discrimination of the Lefty's! The only reason I can think of that they haven't done anything is because left handed people are only what, 10%-15% of the world's population?

Sucks. :[

I'm with you on how they should make a left handed controller, I'd totally buy that.

I'm the same way, I'm ambidextrous myself, but prefer my left hand in most situations such as firing a gun.

I looked over some more of the Halo 3 weapons and all of them seem to be lefty friendly, so as far as weapons go in the game, Bungie would have no reason to simply ignore this idea.

Another one of the bashes against this idea is that it's not worth the time, or that it will "take up extra data" or some other form of that argument, I don't know much about any of that, so I can't really make an argument back in favor of left handed gameplay. One more off the top of my head is the "the HUD will have to be changed" one. But! This is the future, and in the future, wouldn't you think that they would have made a HUD system that adapts to what hand you use? It wouldn't be that hard to flip things around would it? Even if it was just mirrored.

So yeah, once again the only reason I could see Bungie not doing this is because either:

A) Left handed people are in a drastic minority, and there's no point to catering to such a small audience in the first place

B) They won't even consider this idea in the first place

or

C) It's just too much extra work

Alright, alright, it's been in more games than I realized, but even so, that just adds to the fact that it's something that could be easily [actually I don't know how easily] done for Halo: Reach.

That made my day, I love that game, almost as much as Halo!
hehe
I think that is a nice idea, but me, I am ambidextrous, but slightly more dominantly right handed, so I am not fussed.
