Subject: REACHing for a gun, lefty style

Here’s what Luke had to say about the differences in treatment between the Spartans and Elites in Reach:

“Instead of piece-by-piece customization like the Spartans, Elite customization is a full model swap with models selected from the various Elite classes appearing throughout the Campaign. There are all kinds of reasons for this, not the least of which is our continued emphasis on the Spartan as your identity in Reach.”

It would be good as a customisable thing but i don't see it happening. With a different handed model you would have to recreate every different animation on the other side of the body which would take up a lot of disk space i believe. I'm no programmer so correct me if i'm wrong (i suppose they could always just flip the character model mirrorwise).

They do left sides for dual wielding.

Dear Lefty,
Back in the day, you would be considered a witch, or some other form of Hellspawn for being left-handed. So the norm was forcing you evil children of Satan to become right-handed.
To conclude, it is actually socially acceptable to ignore you "Lefties" and continue making shooters for us pure right-handers.
Sincerely,
a "Righty"

Dear Anonymous -blam!-,
I hope you're kidding, and if not, way2go with using the mentality of centuries ago in hopes of finding a way to write this topic off. Thank you for your oh-so inspiring and mind changing insight on this topic, I can tell you really put some thought forth before you decided to hit the "reply" button.
Sincerely,
a "Lefty"

EDIT: Btw, stop trolling.

Dear Arguing peoples of Bnet,
I hope you can cool down, because violence is never the way forward (except in halo), now hug and make up and SHAKE on it!
I think it would be better if nobody made fun of eachother becuase of their dominant hands.
Yours sincirely,
a "Ambidextrously"

haha, guys lets quit arguing, this guy has a good idea and you are just treading him like hes nothing, you should burn, WITCH DUDE! Infact, you are probably more of a with than any lefty was, is or ever will be.

Well this game is for mass market and for the fans, and left handed people are a minority of those people. Hate to say it but deal with it, you have for ever, why change now for something that doesnt change anything substancial?

I see your point, but don't like your mentality. "It's been that way forever, so don't question it, accept it, and go on with your lives."

Yes this doesn't change anything in the game. Yes, this isn't a priority, and yes left there are less left handed people in the world. But why not entertain this idea? Why not give it a chance? Will it hurt anything? I think not.

Yes but imagine it, ok maybe Left handed HUD. But it shouldn't be visible to other players. Because then a bug might appear or if its not visible to players. We'll have thousands of kids crying and screaming "Why can Flam1ngn1NjA7882 see me hold the gun left handed?!!!!!111!"

It simply will cause more prolems then solve.

Well if Bungie ever considered this, they should just do it 100%, as in animations and all. If it works, then they ship it with the finished game, and if not, they simply scrap it.

I don't want it to be in the final game if it's going to cause game breaking glitches [Halo 2's button combos anyone?] I'd only want to see it if worked without people finding ways to exploit it and find ways to get advantages over other players with it.

This seems novelty at best. A purely cosmetic change that few will care about.
Given the amount of work it would be to do this, I don't think it is worth it at all.

Of course it's purely cosmetic, changing from right to left or vice versa won't effect how straight your bullets will fly. It just adds more customization and more tailoring to the player. Who knows how many people will actually use it, just because you don't think it's such a good idea doesn't mean that it won't get used. [sorry if that came off on the offensive]

yes, but you have to mirror the Animation data. Which could lead to problems. And there are a few optimizations that might exist that could also be problematic if you had everything mirrored.

Such a customization could be as simple as a HUD animation change, rather than a complete switch from actual model animations viewed from third-person. It might seem silly to switch the HUD to show a left-handed view, and then have the actual third-person view be reversed, but it would serve the purpose just fine, and wouldn't cause any confusion to the person playing or any other players who happen to see, since neither see both the HUD or the third-person views at once.

In either case, it isn't a far-fetched or pointless idea. The more customization that allows people to better delve into their character, the better the experience, the better the target audience, etc. etc.

Forget about left handed guns.... Let's get more armor permutations and better maps. The magazines that write reviews don't give (if I actually wrote this, there would be so many blams that I would probably just say F that, so i'll just skip over it) about lefty guns. They care about gameplay, not about people who sign their name differently.

WTB reasonable topics... gg

I quite like this idea, even though I'm right handed. Could we have a poll at the top of the post please, just to gauge how well received this idea is?

Counter Strike, and many PC games have the option.

Did you even read through the thread? It was established that it's been done before..

I would have to redo the thread, you can't just add polls to it after it's been made, sorry.

I kind of like that idea, but would still rather see left handed animation and grenade throws. Think of this for a second, when you fired your gun, or threw a grenade, it would magically be appearing as if it was being shot from the right side, or thrown from the right side, even though you're supposed to be "throwing or firing from the left side." It wouldn't really make sense, and I don't see that being a good way of cutting corners to prevent bugs.

No matter how many times I forget about this place, I always get dragged back.

I'm more than okay with that.

Possibly. In order to avoid having to recreate animations for lefty Spartans, it could possibly be a client-side thing. You may see a gun on the left in your HUD, but all players will appear to be holding their gun righty.

Also, hidden gun. I do this for Unreal Tournament III. You still have a reticle, but your gun is invisible.

great idea

Nothing is better than gaming through the day, into the night, then back into the day. It's like when you finally push that power button you feel like you've accomplished nothing, but at the same time, you can't stop smiling.

There have been tons and tons of PC games that have this feature, but I don't think I've ever seen a console game that has it.

Btw - polls on bungie.net mean absolutely nothing, so please don't use them to try and prove some kind of point.

I've thought about this too since I am also left handed. I think it would be cool but its more of a novelty thing than a "necessary to gameplay" thing. I think at the very least though that if your dual wielding you can drop either weapon from either hand, but weapons like the BR Snipe etc are always held with right hand.

no more so than armor perms.

I personally would like to see this (probably because I'm left handed), it's not super important but it would still be nice.

Wouldn't it take slightly longer to reload from empty if the gun had to be tilted before being cocked?

It's been stated in this thread already that most if not all weapons in the military are designed to be lefty friendly.

You should probably read this:

There is one major set back to making left handed spartans/elites. That set back is that some weapons are indeed designed for right handed use only. The first weapon that comes to mind is the Battle Rifle.

I'm sure there are work arounds to this such as simply mirroring the animations [even though this wouldn't make sense because guns can't magically change they're design] it is just a game though after all, and this could be done only exclusively in multiplayer and not campaign.

Technically, that weapon is for lefty's. The bolt is supposed to be on the same side as the person's dominant hand. That's the way real guns are, and it's something that video games have messed up and caused a lot of confusion on.

Also think about this, would it be easier to pull a bolt back with your dominant hand or your other hand? You are supposed to pull back the bolt with your hand which is on the trigger while the stock rests on your shoulder. Example.

I'd imagine it could be just as fast to just point a gun like the BR downward, pull the bolt back, and continue to fire.

Yes!

But instead of actually holding the gun, you just get a cannon in your chest, enjoy.
