I'm sure many of you true fans of the Halo Universe remember back when it was advertised to us numerous times that we'd be able to have Public Custom games after Halo 2, seeing the success it had on the entire community.

Just imagine it... Being able to SEARCH for other people's games through a specific search criteria. The people who say, "NO! It can't happen because searching would take FOREVER due to Forge creations!" Well, there's a simple solution for that...

---Have a simple search criteria to narrow down what you're looking for.

For example:

---Search for Default Maps
-----------------------(on these default maps) Search for TS/FFA/CTF, etc.

---Search for creations based on edited maps
-----------------------limit to certain gametypes
-------------------------------------------limit to number of players
---------------------------------------------------------------------l imit to level

AND... within those lists of maps that pop up on the player list, possibly a little default description on what has been edited so you can know before you join, such as weapon swap, vehicle swap, etc. In fact, I hate to mention it but think a little bit of Gears of War 1's player search and how you can see if people enabled weapons swaps.

Forcing the community to be limited to friends only for the intricacies of Custom Games is an overall negative to the gaming atmosphere, so I completely disagree with having ONLY a Matchmaking system to play with/against random people instead of choosing our if that's what we want.

Let's face it... Imagine what could have been if we were able to actually search for Public Custom games through Player Matches? I'll tell you one positive that could have came from that... Halo 3 would have NEVER been off the number 1 spot on the Xbox LIVE chart.

I can go on and on about this, but I'll continue to share thoughts throughout this thread. Thoughts? Do you want this feature to finally be implemented? I for one think it would mean that Halo would NEVER drop below the number 1 spot on Xbox LIVE... :B

Click here for proof of this from the past

***Edit***
---Yes. Matchmaking would NOT be taken away with this as its replacement. Both can easily coexist. Also, I don't think this should give you XP seeing as how this is basically just player matches, but public for anyone to join instead of just your friends.

Agreed.

I would want more criteria such as general types of customs including MLG customs, Playtests, spam maps, br starts or just normal starts

Yes. Gears of War had it and it was great. I see no reason not to. Who cares about matchmaking.

That's exatly what was floating in my mid for this idea. Agreed.

Here is an idea for the format on the list:

(random word or sentence to describe the game)|(default map/variant name)|(default gametype/variant name)|(number of players/number of players available)|(friendly fire)|(ping)

Info--------------Map-----------------------------Gametype--------------------P layers---FF--Ping
MLG | Guardian/MLG Guardian | Team Slayer/MLG Team Slayer | (14/16) | Yes | 125

Finally making custom games public would make for so many great possibilities and put Halo even that more far ahead of other games. Also, for the people disagreeing... Why?

Why would you disagree to having custom games being able to be played publicly? If you don't to play it, then you CAN just do private like how it is now... This is what this series is in DIRE need of!

Why do you disagree? Explain. Those who disagree, would you mind explaining why you would oppose?

Everytime someone sacks my groceries, I think of Loaf.

Depends, would these games give you XP? And could there be both this and Matchmaking?

Yes being able to play anything you want at anytime makes no sense.

I know there are some amazing gametypes out there that need to be played and exposed to the public, but the limitations of custom games, whether it be people joining custom games or actually making the rules for custom games, need to be expanded upon.

  • 07.26.2009 12:14 PM PDT

i personally like my idea better, it kind of adds to yours

so heres my idea, which i posted on a similar thread

maybe just add a new option in the menus?

you could put in "open to all" you must then designate a type of style your custom game is from a list, you must also specify the number of players and the amount of teams(for multi team matches).

styles would be

casual (zombies and stuff)
competitive slayer
competitive objective
MLG
Campaign? (player amount set from 2 to 4)
Firefight? (player amount set from 2 to 4)

now when someone searches they will choose a style and the game will match you with any game of that style (the same with the # of players)

now if you dislike the set-up you get just quit (no penalty) but the map maker/gametype maker can rate someone, if they rate a person bad, they are not going to have to play with the quitter/unsportsman again, but if they rate good they will still be able to play with the map/gametype maker (rating is optional)

with campaign and firefight you could choose the campaign or firefight "style" and the addition of a difficulty setting and a skulls on/off setting. the host will set up the map, difficulty, skulls, meta-game on/off. then change party to "open to all" and wait for players.

so basically it's just an addition to the Custom Game, Campaign, and Firefight menus (possibly forge menu too?)

so for host
[ ] designates campaign/firefight options

open custom game menu [or campaign or firefight]
choose map
choose gametype(flag, vip, slayer, etc) [difficulty, skulls, meta-game]
press open to all
*menu comes up*
choose style (casual, competitive objective, competitive slayer, MLG) [automatic for campaign]
choose player amount (1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, 5v5, 6v6, 7v7, 8v8, free for all) [2, 3, 4]
press confirm
*wait for players*

or for non host

open custom games [or campaign or firefight]
choose search for custom game [choose search for campaign, or firefight]
*menu opens*
choose style (casual, competitive objective, competitive slayer, MLG) [set already]
choose player amount (1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, 5v5, 6v6, 7v7, 8v8, free for all) [2, 3, 4]
Press confirm
*wait for game*

EDIT: if you want a certain map just host the game with that map, it works perfectly.

the more i think about it the more i like my idea

lol My idea wasn't the ONLY idea that could be implemented... I was simply just giving a suggestion. The main point is that public custom games NEEDS to be included.

It seems that you made another thread just to get attention :x and divide the community on this big issue. Way to go kid -thumbs up-

no, sorry =)

in my opinion i like mine better

also, what? that thread was made before this one if anything yours is dividing the community

you think i typed that whole thing for attention?

  • 07.26.2009 12:37 PM PDT

agreed. I think a system like that needs to be in reach. And you two above, instead of arguing, you could work together to make the idea even better and it might convince bungie to implement it, if they haven't thought of it already. XD

oh it is months old?... sorry

anyway, this is the best part of mine

this would answer peoples need for a firefight matchmaking, and could be cool cause it would make a campaign and forge "matchmaking" also

Yeh good idea. I don't see why they wouldn't make this a reality because even arcade games have this when it comes to co op online as well. Matchmaking is cool and all (for lazy people), but personally I believe this game needs public games for all of co op campaign, firefight AND the multiplayer.

Firefight + this setup would be AMAZING! Horde in Gears of War 2 was O K, but I didn't care much for the Gears universe and killing the locusts. However, in Halo I feel much more connected to their universe and I love killing Grunts, Hunters, whatever.

Off topic - I'd much rather face off against the intelligent Elites than those dumb Brutes. The Halo 1 Elites' AI seemed much more intelligent and difficult to kill than both the Brute in Halo 2/3.

MechanicalHorizn:
You must lay a sacrifice on the almighty altar of FRAG. It demands you get 4 kills with 1 laser shot.
Only then will the gods be appeased.

Me: Im going to hell...

I probably wouldn't have much a need for this seeing as how I normally have many friends online to play customs, but it would be a great idea for people who have no one online at a time.

Just imagine you're bored with the matchmaking playlists and you're like hmm, I want to play something different.

You search for gametypes to your liking in public custom games.
