The music in Halo 2 was too foreign with all the 3rd party rock bands, and the music in Halo 3 was too soft. I swear I didn't remember hearing a single piece of music in Halo 3 until the last level during the Warthog run.

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

Halo 2 only featured 2 songs from 3rd party bands (although the soundtrack included the Complete Incubus track, and an extra song by I cant even remember the band.

If you want to see the MC die, play Legendary. If you want to see MC finish the fight, play Halo 3. If you want to see MC finish the fight by dieing, why did you waste six years when you could have done it yourself right now?

Actually I found when listening to Halo Reach's trailer, that the music in the trailer was scarily similar to Lament for pvt. Jenkins

God, this is exactly what I'm trying to explain. There's just nothing else quite like this after the original. Sure, the later games have beautiful tracks to illustrate the majesty of the scenery, but this. This EXTREMELY heavy tone, just isn't showing anymore.

Lament for Pvt Jenkins' feeling of Death and Despair is only rivaled by the song that symbolized Master Chief's death in Halo 2 (When he escaped the Energy Projector only to fall into water, and into the clutches of a grave he is welcome in. At the time when you could only assume he was dead, when the game cut to the Arbiter.)

The song is called Dust and Bones

I liked Halo 2's soundtrack, even with the guitar parts. Fortunately, nobody sings. Halo 3 was too much... epic, too much it's the closing chapter of the trilogy, let's put all of it. But there were some really nice moments. I just LOVED that part with the cinematic, which was way too short unfortunately. That something that irks me with Halo 3, all the cinematics and everything feel too... disconnected, too movie like. I mean the view was awesome, the music was awesome, but it was finished before we knew it, it took seconds to attain the ground... Seriously, that one of the moments of the game that deceived me the more, just because I loved so much the mood the whole music and landscape brought, it brought a kind of feeling a lot more akin to Halo CE, some part of its mysteriousness and such was brought back. One of the reasons I loved so much the mission the Ark is that it reminded me of the Silent Cartographer. And now that I listen to the song in its entirety, the melody near the end is taken from Halo CE as far as my memory serves,

I feel like it's been quite consistent.
Roll Call and Final Effort are nice tracks. For that tone your talking about, well, it's in the flood levels.

ODST has some very, very unique tracks. Sort of jazzy.

You know those "ODST" soundtracks on youtube are fan-made right?

I think you're on to something Jonny. It's easy to overlook though, because most of the game seems to go a different direction.

I really loved the music like Impend and The Last Spartan and The Sacred Icon and whatnot. I enjoyed the WHOLE Halo CE soundtrack. That music is riveting. I just think Halo 3 tried to be TOO epic. It almost seemed like Chief was in NO danger because the music made him sound invincible and dramatically awesome. he is supposed to be in constant struggle and just barely overcome, not pummel everything with a flick of his finger!

The opening of the song that occurs during the Cutscene.

I agree. Drums, bass, and monks. That's what makes Halo... well, Halo. Not some guitar, piano, or a -blam!-y nu-metal band.

I believe whatever they make it is Halo. As they are the creators. I trust them with their own creation, even if they decide Hannah Montana does a track. If it works and it sounds good, go for it. It's their games. I have enjoyed all the music in all 3 games. Even the so called "nu-metal crap". And so did many others. That said, it's music, and we all have our different opinions.

Granted, I did enjoy Halo CE's soundtrack the best. Reach should use some remixes/re-imaginings of that music, or something else reminiscent of it.

However, I don't think the game will have the proper tone to have an extremely similar soundtrack. Halo:Reach will document the battles on a planet under full-scale invasion and eventual annihilation. I doubt it will have much of the mystery and suspense Halo CE had in it's theme.

The emphasis on percussive instruments. It suits Halo great and I just believe its been toned down dramatically after the first game.

Ok, yeah. Makes me think, I do hope that side of Halo will be even more present, if not more present than Halo CE in Reach. I mean it's a prequel, that whole war over Halo and existence in the universe is not quite there. It will have a more... militaristic feel than the others, at least that's what I think, and I think such music along with more quiet, almost ambient ones would do the job best.

Actually, I feel vocal chants are what make Halo music so unique. Marty goes a whole different way with vocals than other game (a way that Epic tried to copy in Gears of War)

Ok, in my next post, Im going to compile a list of Halo 2 Percussion heavy tracks I think you may have missed out on...

Second acct: RC Zerg Rushes

Halo CE, overall, has the best soundtrack. However, the Halo 2 soundtrack contains the single best piece of work by Marty O'Donnell, Unyielding. I would play this mission over and over again, simply to hear this music.

I doubt it will have much of the mystery and suspense Halo CE had in it's theme.

Sorry, somewhat getting off subject for a second, but I'm not too sure about that statement. I think there's still a lot we don't know and that's why Bungie wants to go back. There are surviving spartans in the book series but in the game series, it's like they just forgot about it, or were keeping it from us until now. Think about it this way. You start off the latest chapter in Halo and you suddenly have regrouped with surviving spartans on Reach. Most people would be confused. They were always led to believe Master Chief was the last Spartan alive.

ON SUBJECT, the opportunity you speak of for the mystery and suspense is still there.

Ok, here we go, Halo 2 percussion heavy tracks include:

Ghosts of Reach
Heretic, Hero
Flawed Legacy(this one is an improved Halo CE remake)
Impend
Mombasa Suite
Cairo Suite
Delta Halo Suite(I know it opens similar to Cairo Suite, but it is a totally different song after that.

Well then, I know when to give in. You win. I think you've just about proved me wrong. What the heck did I make this thread for? Oh well, at least I got some awesome music to listen to now.

Devils... Monsters
Covenant Dance
Alien Corridors
Brothers in Arms

These are why Halo 1 soundtrack rocked above all others. I know some of these have a few remix parts in the following games, but they are no where near as great as the originals.

I'm delicious.

I missed the squeaky wheel music (at least that's what I called it) that usually accompanied the flood. That made the flood experience much more tense.

This is what I'm referring to.

The music in Halo made the Flood twice as freaky. Not to mention when they walked you could see pieces of flesh fall off of the body, and the color blending was really sick, and disgusting.
