yes you can smart one, its called xbc (xbox connect)
infact, ive made some instructions (easy to follow)
1: make sure you have broadband internet (dsl, cable, T1 line, etc), no 50k dial up or anything like that
2: have the necessary equipment which should consist of an xbox, long ethernet cables, a router (or if you dont have a router, a long crossover cable), an ethernet port on you computer, and a current version of windows (or for you losers, a current version of a mac)
3: go to http://www.xbconnect.com and download the latest version of XBC
4: set up your cables as shown on http://www.xbchelp.com/network/ (if you need additional router setup help, go to http://www.xbchelp.com/router/ and select the router you use) also for additional help go to http://www.xbchelp.com/
or if you have a crossover cable, just put it directly from your box into your ethernet port
5: after you have all of your cables set up and have finished downloading xbc, install xbc (very basic) and then create an account (also before you load xbc, make sure you have all firewalls turned off to configured to allow xbc)
6: after you have created your account and have xbc started up, its time to find your xbox, turn on your xbox and assuming you have halo 2, load it up, log on, and go into system link, and go to the page where it says "create game" dont click that, but stay on that screen (or for halo 1, go to system link, and go to the page that says "looking for games")then go to xbc and go to tools>find>my console, if you have everything set up correctly, it should find your console pretty fast, otherwise, try other configurations and consult http://www.xbchelp.com/ for more help
7: JOINING A GAME: make sure you have found your console before you join a game, take your xbox screen to the same page it was to find your console, and then on xbc click on the left bar (assuming you are in xbc classic) on halo 2 or whatever game you are playing, then look through the choices in the middle and when you find one you like, double click it and you should be set, and when it finds a game on your xbox, press A and you should be in
8: HOSTING A GAME: on your xbox console, go to the screen where you found your console earlier, and press A on "create game" and set up a game that you want to play, then go to xbc, on the bottom left there should be a button that says "host", click it and put in all of the correct information (excluding passowords), and click start and then wait for people to join (which might take some time)
