I watched, and unless I'm mistaken, the only time a player dies quickly from fuel rod blast is when the player was already out of stamina, and was mid-air, being bombarded with a continuous blast of the cannon that most certainly didn't kill him upon contact.
We don't even know what difficulty these guys are playing on. I'm sure there is a difference, but I sincerely doubt it's going to be as big as everyone here is making it out to be.
If I am not wrong, the dude's stamina was full and his health was slight around half.
At 0:40 in the first video, the bottom player has lost all of his stamina and his health was slightly lowered. He is hit by the projectile and his health is significantly reduced, but he does not die until he is hit a second time by the beam. The next time someone is hit with the cannon is in the next video at 0:15, where the lower player also has no stamina left, and his health is cut in half upon impact, but not killed as he quickly escapes the rest of the beam.
If this is on normal, then it is a big enough change for my taste, and I'll be all for it... but something tells me that they were playing on Heroic. I can't cite a source on that, but I could have sworn the details of the Firefight booths being explained, perhaps in a podcast.
From your first paragraph, those last few lines, already highlights the change between how the health models for both the Chief and the ODSTs have changed but you're right. Dude definitely has no stamina. Sorry bout that.
And, I don't believe they mentioned what difficulty they played anywhere. Though, I do recall a forum post of someone complaining they weren't letting people play above Normal.
