Most people think that this would turn into a "camping fest." I disagree. How could it turn into a "camping fest" when games that already have classes, are not like that? Players still need to get points. Players still need to acquire strategical positions.

who are you kidding??????
all that Call of duty 4 & WaW are, are campfests!

COD isn't a real class based game.

Um no. I play a lot of CoD, and there is no more camping than in Halo. Less even.

And please read this:

Maps/guns can be designed to prevent any one type of weapon from dominating. Just for the sake of example, lets look at the map Ambush from CoD 4:

On that map, I can spawn with a sniper. And I normally do. Now when I get into a sniper position, I have a good field of view, and can dominate the other team.

Now you may be thinking that this is just proving your point, but wait! There's more.

While a few other guys and I spawn with snipers, a lot more people spawn with assault rifles, battle rifles, SMGs, and light machine guns.

Now the map is designed so that a good sniper can dominate. But at the same time, it doesn't mean that a guy with an uzi can't come and get me.

Each sniper position has its pros and cons. The blue walled building that is a typical spot is good because it is hard to see the sniper in there. But it is also bad because there is only one way out. Which also happens to be the only way in. So you can be fragged out, gunned out, etc.

So what normally happens is that the few snipers on each team fight each other to prevent the enemy snipers from destroying our guys that are not sniping.

For those you that say that there will be camping. Yes, there is camping in EVERY game. But at least in games with classes, if a guy is camping with a shotgun, you can get your own shotgun and stop him from camping instead of failing your BR around trying to make him run out of ammo.

No, it just wouldnt be Halo anymore

I agree it just wouldn't be the same, everything should be left just as it is.

"why fix something that isn't broken?"

I live by that statement. But at the same time, I see that change is a good thing. Think about it. For over 9 years, we have had the same basic Halo. Why shouldn't we try something new?

One does not simply walk into Halo.

How much ignorance is in this thread?

We are on a forum, where you can discuss opinions and have arguments. The point of this thread is to discuss having classes in Halo Reach. People are proposing ideas that they believe should at least be considered while the game is being made. Instead of people giving logical reasons as to why Halo would fail if it has a class system introduced in Reach, they are giving reasons as to why they don't want Halo to have a class system at all. There's no logical argument with facts to support their statements, only half-assed assumptions that it would ruin gameplay due to the standard of Quake-style gameplay, when Halo Reach could possibly branch off from that aspect.

I'd like to see proof that having a class based system makes a game fail. I'd like to see an actual argument about the pros and cons of a class system, not your personal preference of how you want your games to be played. I couldn't care less whether or not a class system is placed into the game because I would be glad to play a prequel to Halo CE.

If Reach is class based and we don't get a classic mode I will not buy it. I will rent it for the campaign. The only way I would buy it if it were class based is if Firefight were heavily expanded and I would just play that instead.

And that's your opinion of why you want it to stay with Quake-style gameplay, because you prefer it that way, but does it really contribute to the discussion as to why a class based system won't work?

What do you mean?

In a class based game everything has to be too balanced. Power weapons on map is a superior system.

TW your trying to say that Halo: Reach multiplayer should be like CoD, and Halo multiplayer is nothing like it. There are power ups and power weapons on the map so it would be pointless to start now.

I could say the same thing about the changes from Halo 1 to Halo 2.

Agreed. Halo 2 added new aspects, but yet people still enjoyed it.

No to classes. It just wouldn't be Halo anymore. But I do think it would be a good idea to choose which area you spawn in when respawning, so you still have the mad 'Rocket Race', 'Sniper Race' etc. but you can choose to spawn in set areas, either at base or in the thick of it. StarWars: Battlefront did spawn choosing very well, take out the classes, and Voila!
A better spawn system for maps big and small!

Are you sure it wouldn't be Halo anymore? I thought Halo was defined by its story, not by its gameplay. Without Halo's story, it just becomes another Quake-style game, but its story makes it unique. Are you telling me that just because the gameplay changes, you wouldn't be able to distinguish the game as Halo anymore?

The only difference between what you said and classes, is that now you can spawn with the weapons.

And we have had a Quake system since 2000. Why not change the system after 10 years? Why not try something new.

No matter how many times I forget about this place, I always get dragged back.

I'm more than okay with that.

I wouldn't want classes because of the reputation the Halo series has as a good arcadey shooter. With so many games trying to shoot for perfect realism, Halo is a nice break from the realistic nature of so many shooters out there. I've always lauded Halo for never being akin to the Battlefield-style games. Bungie just needs to keep improving on the formula they have.

  • 08.04.2009 8:38 PM PDT

They have been working on it for 9 years. If they don't have it right yet, then it is time to try something else.

And just because you have classes, doesn't mean that a game is realistic.

The gameplay will never be perfect or "right," there will always be room for improvement, even in the smallest way.

Also, having classes may not make a game realistic (see Team Fortress 2) but the majority of class-based games, or games that allow you to choose your starting weapon tend to try to take the realistic approach (see Battlefield where you have classes, Rainbow Six where you have modifiable loadouts, Call of Duty, etc.)

I can see classes being more trouble than they are worth in Halo. Perhaps classes will be implemented into the Campaign, but I hope Multiplayer retains its static gameplay. Everyone starts the same, everyone dies the same.
