To the two posts above this one, thank you.

It wouldn't work.
Not if you want to keep traditional Halo gameplay.
Traditional Halo gameplay can be found in 4 games. Play those.
All the weapons' functions would have to be redesigned from the ground up, in order to create even a usable balance between all the weapons.
No not really. Mostly just firing rate, and accuracy.
The maps would have to get larger in order for this to work (as you've already stated), and with the traditional 4v4, the games would be incredibly slow for the larger maps.
People already complain about gameplay and movement speed having been lowered noticeably from the previous incarnations of Halo.
I never said that maps would have to be bigger. I just said they would have to be balanced. A balanced map allows for a (good) sniper to dominate, while allowing other players to move around, and counter-act the enemy snipers with other weapons.
Not many people enjoy the bigger team games, as evidenced by the drastically smaller populations of Social BTB, and Squad Battle, so increasing player count per game to compensate for the larger maps (which compensates for slower overall gameplay) would be the exact opposite of the Halo games we've all come to love.
5v5 is a great team size. That is what social slayer has, it has the largest population.
Smaller team games can work too. Classes =/= larger teams.
I'm opposed to the a class-system, simply because the way I see it, the changes required to make it work, would change the classic Halo gameplay much too drastically for it to really feel like a Halo FPS game by Bungie.
Mostly what will have to change will be the weapons. And when you think about it, changes have already occurred to most weapons.
For example, the snipers should be altered so that it is hard to no-scope, AKA a large hip fire spread. That way, they are only really effective when scoped in (or if a lucky shot lands on the enemy player). Just by increasing the spread of the sniper when hip-firing, it is already more balanced because you can't no-scope effectively anymore.
The assault rifle:
40 round clip
10 rounds a second
15 rounds to kill
2x damage bonus if a shot is a head shot*
Aiming reticule size of the BR, with random spread inside that reticule when in full auto. But much more accurate when pulsed.
SMG:
Same as in Halo 3, but with the spread of the Halo 3 Assault rifle.
BR:
Semi automatic
30 round clip
12 body shots to kill
8 head shots to kill
Rocket launcher:
2 shots only
Veers off target slightly at a distance
Slight vehicle lock-on
I just came up with this off the top of my head, so it obviously isn't perfect.
*The 2x damage bonus applies to all weapons besides the BR, and those that have a 1-shot capability.
