Here’s what Luke had to say about the differences in treatment between the Spartans and Elites in Reach:
“Instead of piece-by-piece customization like the Spartans, Elite customization is a full model swap with models selected from the various Elite classes appearing throughout the Campaign. There are all kinds of reasons for this, not the least of which is our continued emphasis on the Spartan as your identity in Reach.”
They have specifically avoided race based multiplayer or generic characters.
In terms of a battle damage system,
when shields are up, wherever the round hits your model, a scorch mark is placed on your armor. The size is relative to the damage of the shot to shields. So a big scorch mark from a plasma pistol overcharge, a medium one from a Plasma Rifle, and a small one from an SMG bullet.
When shields are down, damage for your hitpoints chip the paint away, leaving patches of armor without paint. The size of the chip would be relative to the damage of the shot to health. So a large chip from a brute shot blast, a smaller one from a plasma pistol shot.
But when you get shot without shields, a blood texture is placed on top of wherever you got hit.
The more powerful the shot, the larger the blood texture.
So, you would end up with scorched, bloody chipped armor.
