Alright guys. here is my attempt at making sense of all these theroies.
I hope this makes some sense.
To start off, in the trailer it never mentions Reach itself, not at all really. This is what begins to make me think, maybe the plannet is not Reach. I think this planet is just another planet that the Covenant we're glassing, sometime before Reach. Now, the way I make sense of this, is the combination of other's theories, first off, TheCyberFreak posted (most known) Spartan 259? He explains that there was never more than 150 Spartans orginally created, so maybe this stands for Spartan 2nd class, 059. This can make sense, but then it gets to the point that this would be Spartan Malcolm who died due to the rough landing on Reach, even though the trailer says "This is Sierra 259, we have Spartans on the ground". This had made many believe this was a flaw in the story and I had thought weird of it aswell, but Bungie seems like the last who would do this. I have gave it thought and the idea that has now just came to my head, is maybe this planet you see in the trailer, is not the one Malcolm died on (Reach), but rather just another planet where glassing did occur. As for the supposed Spartan 3 that may be in this trailer I don't know.
But I think the trailer makes sense with it being another planet, it's almost as a prelude to the actual Fall of Reach. Bungie also does not want to give out much about thid game either, so doing something a bit sneaky like this makes sense to me.
Now also, this planet may rise questions and begin to be important in the Halo universe, for there is obviously similarities with \this planet and the one in the Ledgendary ending of Halo 3. Bungie wanted that us to see that. Not saying they are the same planet, maybe closely related though. But if they were the same planet, this could mean either, John-117 has ended up near the ruins of this planet, or perhaps a definite maybe (wouldn't be the first time in the Halo universe) that some space-time continuim did occur, but the thing is, why does from the Legendary view not show the glassing? The only evidence there is the strange blue "eclipse'?
I'm hoping this can give you guys more idea or thought about the trailer and this planet, as well as it's connections to Halo 3. Please add ideas, thoughts, and go ahead, prove me wrong, I don't know the Halo universe too well, but I thought it was an alright observation.
This is not a flaming response or a retard question ok? Have you read the novel the Fall of Reach?
Have you noticed in the trailer that the UNSC frigate in the smoke you can see a body floating in space, that must be Spartan James, if you read the novels this is the only part where the Spartans drop in a quick response after they leave the Pillar of autumn.
Also the voice in the trailer is Vice Admiral Danforth Whitcomb.
