Alright guys. here is my attempt at making sense of all these theroies.
I hope this makes some sense.

To start off, in the trailer it never mentions Reach itself, not at all really. This is what begins to make me think, maybe the plannet is not Reach. I think this planet is just another planet that the Covenant we're glassing, sometime before Reach. Now, the way I make sense of this, is the combination of other's theories, first off, TheCyberFreak posted (most known) Spartan 259? He explains that there was never more than 150 Spartans orginally created, so maybe this stands for Spartan 2nd class, 059. This can make sense, but then it gets to the point that this would be Spartan Malcolm who died due to the rough landing on Reach, even though the trailer says "This is Sierra 259, we have Spartans on the ground". This had made many believe this was a flaw in the story and I had thought weird of it aswell, but Bungie seems like the last who would do this. I have gave it thought and the idea that has now just came to my head, is maybe this planet you see in the trailer, is not the one Malcolm died on (Reach), but rather just another planet where glassing did occur. As for the supposed Spartan 3 that may be in this trailer I don't know.
But I think the trailer makes sense with it being another planet, it's almost as a prelude to the actual Fall of Reach. Bungie also does not want to give out much about thid game either, so doing something a bit sneaky like this makes sense to me.
Now also, this planet may rise questions and begin to be important in the Halo universe, for there is obviously similarities with \this planet and the one in the Ledgendary ending of Halo 3. Bungie wanted that us to see that. Not saying they are the same planet, maybe closely related though. But if they were the same planet, this could mean either, John-117 has ended up near the ruins of this planet, or perhaps a definite maybe (wouldn't be the first time in the Halo universe) that some space-time continuim did occur, but the thing is, why does from the Legendary view not show the glassing? The only evidence there is the strange blue "eclipse'?
I'm hoping this can give you guys more idea or thought about the trailer and this planet, as well as it's connections to Halo 3. Please add ideas, thoughts, and go ahead, prove me wrong, I don't know the Halo universe too well, but I thought it was an alright observation.

Assguards are only important to people who run away from danger. Personally, I like to throw myself into danger facefirst, in a beautiful swan dive.

Y-your serious aren't you?

If Sierra-259 = SPARTAN-II 059, then Sierra-117 = SPARTAN-I 017. And John is most definitely not a SPARTAN-I.

Yea, that is quite the flaw in the theory, but there being a Spartan-259 wouldn't make much more sense, maybe because it was a battle where more than one type of Spartan class was taking place? So they were to adress there class? I really don't know I just went for the more reasonable answer in my eyes.

If Sierra-259 = SPARTAN-II 059, then Sierra-117 = SPARTAN-I 017. And John is most definitely not a SPARTAN-I.

Well yeah, but then you know, it would be Halo: Some other planet.

I just don't see why they would call it Reach when your fighting on another planet. Of course it could be you and your squad protecting reach to the actually fall. But i don't see it being some other planet. Plus inst gamma station on reach..

Now, I did say the trailer, or this event in the game could be a prelude.
Please read carefully.

I'm not sure which planet it may be, perhaps Ballast? Not much is known about the battle, giving Bungie an oppourtunity to expand on it, they never did mention the planet in the trailer, and I do find it suspicious.
Sorry if i'm kinda bumping this, I just try to expand on the idea, and I think it's an idea to see.

This is not a flaming response or a retard question ok? Have you read the novel the Fall of Reach?

Have you noticed in the trailer that the UNSC frigate in the smoke you can see a body floating in space, that must be Spartan James, if you read the novels this is the only part where the Spartans drop in a quick response after they leave the Pillar of autumn.

Also the voice in the trailer is Vice Admiral Danforth Whitcomb.

Nah, only First Strike and Ghosts of Onyx, both really great. Just never really got around to it I guess. And yes I have seen what seems to be the Spartan, thanks for bringing this up, it is a good point. I really don't know how to debate this, either then saying it could be debris or something and maybe the frigate is too far away for the body to be that big, but those are pretty loose, stupid arguements. And for the voice, how do you know it is Whitcomb? Is that dialogue in the book? If not, but you're still pretty convinced this is him, maybe he was involved in this other planet glassing I am talking about?
Thank you for bringing these points and not being just a jackass about it.

While the trailer doesn't mention Reach, it does mention the Fermion scanning outpost, which was designed to detect possible incoming threats to Reach.

Reach was not the first Covenant ecounter. I am in belief that the Sierra stuff are Pelicans like Echo 419.

It does? I'd have to check that out, but i'm sure you're right, and that is a very good point, good job man. Wouldn't have known about that anyway, but thanks.

EDIT: Could it be possible that other UNSC planets had simillar/same systems?

Didn't read the main post - But I'm surprise NOBODY knows why they called Master Chief Sierra-117 it wasn't because of Spartan-I 017 that can't even make sense, the reason it was used because both sides are watching each others outgoing messages, so if the covenant heard Spartan 117 or Master Chief, they will know where the "Demon" is and attack that location.

I'm sure they don't use the same phonetic alphabet as we do today, if you ever researched the phonetic alphabet you will notice that it changes quite often. So "S" is Sierra in there phonetic alphabet.
