Okay just to clear a few things up,
I don't want Halo: Reach to be Halo 3.5, but I just don't want Reach to drift to far toward Call of Duty 6. I agree, as I said at the top of the thread that classes can work, but only if done correctly. If there is a create a class feature it will ruin gameplay, Classes will only work if preset and every class has an advantage over the other. There should be no superior class as this will be the only one that is ever used. If your Class has a Sniper it should be disadvantaged by by low shield recharge, weak secondary weapon and maybe decreased health. The reason Halo may not work with classes is because its weaponry is split into two groups. Small arms, and Power weapons. The power weapons are the ones you have to fight for.
And think about it, how many custom game variants would fall if there was no remains of the old Halo style. Cop's and Robbers, Infection, Team Rockets. I play Halo for it's Player Created content. I play it for Forge and it's map variants, for Theater and it's screenshots and film clips, and for Custom Games and it's gametype variants. I play Halo because it isn't the ultra realistic FPS Call of Duty is. Your right, Change is good, unless it's a Change for the worst. I would love it if it had preset classes and an option to turn off classes in Custom Games so we can remake the gametypes from we all play from Halo 3
