The road that halo has traveled

It scares me to think about what Halo Reach will be when considering the past couple games. With each new game there came an increased amount of "cornyness" and overall childish aspects to the features and dialogue - just to name a few.

It downright frustrates me to even look at the mood of each game. With each new game the story of human survival becomes more dire but I have yet to see the gameplay fallow suit. Time and time again I hear marines say lame one liners and crack jokes as their buddies are being killed. Seemed to me like Halo CE did a better job at creating an atmosphere that matched what was going on in the story. Halo 3 did ok with this aspect, but only when it was scripted.

I guess the main point that I want to get across is that I feel Bungie has created the following...

A Serious mature game, and then, over time, turned it into childish adventure. This is one of the reasons it seems like the majority of players are kids. Anyways, my question for you is which one do you want Halo Reach to be. A game with comic relief around every corner or something a tab bit believable.

Either way, our voice wont matter whichever way it goes. It's not like Bungie will switch direction after two and a half years into production.

The plasma burning through bodies and stuff wouldn't balance right because one shot and you pretty much die. Where is the fun in that? Also, it's been 2years of production this September, roughly. They started this at the end of Halo 3 production.

Corn, Oil, and Wine... We need more wine...

Well if keeps going to childishness, I'm not going to even buy it, a hell its made by bungie, its gonna be good.

This isn't call of duty.

Who cares if the marines are extremely positive? you aren't even listening to them half the time.

listen to the scripted cinematics for the real atmosphere.

How boring would the game be if all marines and stuff said was things 100% serious and crying for a fallen comrade. It just adds to the atmosphere to have them say funny stuff.

Halo is Halo, I understand. But what we call "Halo" has changed, and I think it would be a negative if it were to continue in that direction. Trust me, it would be horrible if the game turned out to be something close to COD...

Its the last halo bungie will make. Do you really think they will change what halo is at the last game? It will continue in that direction, expect changes at the next big halo that does not come from bungie. Its their last halo game and they will make it a halo similuar to halo 1-3.

You're wrong. The atmosphere of a video game depends on absolutely everything. From the cinematics right down to the colour palette. While the atmosphere of Halo 3 is excellent for multiplayer games, but for a serious story detailing an enormous war where billions are slaughtered, it doesn't quite cut the ice.

And what's Call of Duty got to do with anything? The OP is saying that he believes the atmosphere of Reach should be darker and more fitting to the story. As soon as somebody voices their opinions on things they reckon should change, somebody pops up and says "This is Call of Duty".

What I was saying is that Halo has never really had a dark atmosphere. It's just that more dialogue has been added in the later games, and you never had any marines with you at any point in Halo:CE. When you do though, it is one of the silliest parts of the game.

I bet you based your arguments entirely on the one marine who was scared -blam!-less.

I think the atmosphere hasn't changed as much as the levels. We just haven't had any more scary levels like 343 Guilty Spark since Halo CE.

In essense, Halo has never been Call of Duty, which is the exact "atmosphere" he seems to be describing here.

Yarr, I'm a pirate.

Whatever man, shooting the crap out of aliens is and always will be fun. We should be worrying about the fun factor more so than the dialogue that will set up some sort of arbitrary atmosphere.

  • 07.26.2009 12:15 PM PDT

Actually I always found it inspiring how marines kept positive despite the overwhelming odds against 'em. I would much prefer a huge battle in Halo for a change. Sure, some battles were big but I want to feel a "massive" battle.

  • 07.26.2009 12:16 PM PDT

what is it with all these people that want to change everything that makes halo games amazing?... just because other games are like that doesn't mean this one should be.
