Subject: Why Halo Reach COULD have 16+ multiplayer.

Ok well most people think that Xbox can only handle 16 people in a game at a time, well that is not true, its only 16 people because its a P2P Netowrking system. I mean hell if Halo 3 used Dedicated servers we could use flame grenades in Matchmaking and they could have kept the Vortex power up, but they went the P2P route again. Anyways if Reach uses a Dedicated server network system the game can very well go 16+ (though I think 32 would be the magic limit on people) with out any lag. So for those of you who think it cant be done, please learn about diffrent networking types :D

No, dedicated servers won't work like you think.

They seem to work for

Battlefield
World of War Craft
War Hammer Online
Runes of Magic
Free Realms
any MMO in general

Bungie has even admitted the reason the fuel rod and flame grenades are not in the game is because it would cause network slow down and ect, and the Vortex was removed because that caused a MASSIVE slowdown when in online

Also Halo shouldnt really go anywhere over 32 if they got the chance to get dedicated servers.

  • 07.27.2009 9:52 PM PDT

Yeah I agree. Bungie needs dedecated severs to run Halo with no lag.

None of these games require close to the intensive graphics processing that Halo 3 does. Also Halo 3 multiplayer doesn't have loading screens which most MMO's do when you enter a new area.

If you want to see the MC die, play Legendary. If you want to see MC finish the fight, play Halo 3. If you want to see MC finish the fight by dieing, why did you waste six years when you could have done it yourself right now?

I don't know enough about this to make an informed decision about this. But then again, that hasn't stopped 99.999999999999% of this forum from giving their opinions so here I go.

No. It should NOT be done. There's a reason why Halo 3 is the juggernaut it is today, and that is because of its massively efficient matchmaking system. You click start, the system searches, you find party, you vote on game, you start the game. It's fast. The absolute fastest system I've ever seen on a console. There has to be a reason for this. If anything, whatever it is they're doing should not be changed, but improved upon.

I hate when people think graphics have anything to do with networking code. Graphics have very little to nothing to do with networking at all... Its not like the pixels and polygons are jammed through ur cable modem(or what ever provider u use), the only thing that is sent is location of platers and some other small player info which are very small file packets... No graphics code is sent over the internet, therefor you can have the best looking game ever made with multiplayer use the same amount of bandwidth as the worst looking game with multiplayer. Battlefield 1943 is a pretty decent looking game and it has 24 players with no lag because of dedicated servers.

Flame/fuel rod aren't in because of framerate issues, not latency

two completely different kinds of lag

  • 07.28.2009 12:17 AM PDT

He's right. Graphics has NOTHING to do with the networking. Basically everything he said was right.

All the games you listed besides battlefield are mmo's. There is a reason mmo's have dedicated servers... think about it. MMO = Massive Multiplayer Online.

Graphics can effect online play. Would you like real great graphics with 32 people on one screen? No, the frame rate would slow down the game thus giving it lag.

Halo 3 runs through The Xbox Live Network. Xbox Live uses the best connection as its own type of Dedicated Server. If Halo Reach wanted dedicated servers than I dont think it would be able to go through the Xbox Live Network

Yeah I know, cause Battlefield 1943 goes through EAs servers and not XBL really... I really hope MS starts to make XBL support dedicated servers cause peoples home connections and set ups really arent good enough to take online multiplayer to next level, the 24 plus players online no lag.
