If yall love Halo and Bungie so MUCH. THEN Y IS THE ONLY THING YALL DOING IS ITCHIN!!!!
I've been playin Bungie games on my Mac even before the days of Pathways, Abuse, Marathon, marathon: Durandal, Marathon: Infinity, Soulblighting on MYTH 1 & 2 (even myth3 that they didn't do),Oni and I WAITED 2 YEARS for halo to come out THEN Bungie was bought by Microsoft and I waited another 2 years for HALO to be totally remade in to HALO:CE for this new stinkin console called an XBOX (which we love so much). FOR HALO I left the computer gaming world and was the only one in my town that had an Xbox and halo during the Launch shortage....for HALO. EVER sence day one Bungie has been breakin down the doors with somthin new and is one of the few only companies like Blizzard Entertainment that refuse to put out a crappie product. I may suck at Halo but I LOVE (I repeat) I LOVE BUNGIE & HALO. Be appreciative of the products they have brought us OR DON'T BUY THEM!! Bungie will put out their product when its good and ready they will also tell us how and what its made of when they are good and ready to say so. If all we do is pressure them........It's good to give suggestions but don't be hypocritical by sayin you love halo, then Itch/moan and groan about Bungie makin halo.
BUNGIE DO WHAT YOU DO! Take your time and break new ground like you always have. FELLOW Xboxers have faith....BUNGIE always delivers.

every halo, except for odst (since that was supposed to be an expansion), uses a new engine...

What he said. So I'm not to worried about a new game engine changing Halo to much.

Actually, the all three Halo games each used the old game engine. Each one improving the old one. So basically, Halo 1, 2, 3, and ODST all use the same game engines. They're just heaviliy modified for each game. Halo: Reach is supposed to have an entirely new game engine. The likes of which no one has ever seen before.

No.

It was a modified unfinished Halo 2 engine. Did you notice the bump maps on the characters? The Halo1 engine can't do that.

Not to mention the blood particle effects were a bit above the H1 engine...

Idk... All sources I've read or seen EXCEPT ONE say it's the Halo 2 engine. :/

I could be wrong, and it's just an advanced H1 engine. It's a damn shame what happened to wideload though.

In my opinion, it would be an advanced Halo 1 Engine because a lot of the dying animations are the same as Halo 1 and when you drive vehicles, then tend to move just like Halo 1 vehicles, especially the hover vehicles. On top of that, if you flip out of a vehicle, you might get splattered by it. This situation on happened in Halo 1, in Halo 2, you would merely just take a little bit of damage.

Also, I'm not sure if this is related to the game engine, but the main menu for Stubbs The Zombie is almost the same as the main menu for Halo. Plus, on the Xbox version, there was an Easter Egg in Halo 1 where when you created a profile, if you type .fortune for that profile name, the game will tell you your fortune. That same Easter Egg exists in Stubbs The Zombie but it doesn't exist in Halo 2.

So that's what I believe for now. And what did happen to wideload? As far as I know, they kind of downsized or something and are working on smaller games for Xbox Live Arcade.

Last I saw from them was....damn....

I don't even remember the game's name. All I remember was that people didn't like it. :/

Poor guys.

Oh well....That makes me think though...Could there be a total conversion mod for STZ to Halo 1? That way all the characters/ weapons could have bumpmapping? Maybe even gore? That'd be cool.

This is untrue. They do not modify old versions, they build entirely new ones, which is precisely why multiplayer map ports are impossible. They have to build everything from the ground up.

I really want to look amazing and breathtaking just to rub it in SONY's face, but only if it doesn't affect the gameplay.

I hope that they focus a little more time on lighting effects. They were OK in halo 3 but not really believable, because the objects forged never blocked light to cast shadows when floating.

Actually it is true. I don't know about Halo 1 to 2, but I know Halo 2 to 3 was a modified engine, and everyone know 3 to ODST is a modified engine.

i agree with milky2507 beacause i also think halo 3 was good but it could have been a bit better if bungie took a little bit more time to make it. and i also think that bungie should try to make reach focus on single player and campaign because halo3 seemed to be focused on the multiplayer more than the single player and reach should be all about the story. i also agree because i think bungie should put every little detail from the book in the game because people have never seen any visuals about reach acept for the book cover and the pictures that were in theyre minds. and its possible to make everything because with cutscenes, and the fact that its a video game and not a movie and in video games anything is possible. i hope that bungie really takes theyre time on the game and makes theyre last contibution to the halo ip a good one and to go out with a bang with it. they should make the scenry and graphics the most captvating and beutiful thing ever and make every thing with plenty of detail. i also know that with vvideo games you have a issue with lag and memory so thats why bungie should push the game to its memory limits to were it will still very functional.

I think Bungie will make a engine itself or they use the Unreal Engine 3/CryEngine3.

Bungie will almost definitely make their own game engine (The AAA Engine). They probably would not want to pay licensing fees to the companies that own Unreal Engine or CryEngine. Besides, those games don't really fit for Halo. It would be just like Call of Duty 4 using the Halo Engine. It just wouldn't feel right.

Halo: Reach isn't even out yet and there is barely any info about that game. So what else is there to do besides talk about the game (itchin)?

Good to see someone who knows what they're talking about for once. The reason why they're moving on to this AAA engine now is because the Halo 3 engine has reached it's maximum peak with ODST, there is nothing more they can do with it. However, bringing out a new engine brings out many new possibilities to do stuff they could only dream of doing with Halo 2 and 3.

I read a news article that Halo: Reach will not be using the standard Halo Engine. Instead it will be using something known as the "AAA Engine". You can read the article here:

http://www.gameguru.in/first-person-shooters/2009/16/halo-rea ch-aaa-engine/

Based on the article, it seems Halo Reach is supposed to have graphics that are like 10 times better than Halo 3. Anyone else have more info on this new "AAA Engine"?

I've only picked as far as you've gotten, so more info on this would be greatly helpful... sorry I couldn't contribute anything myself lol. I really hope this game is THE Halo game of Halo games. The definitive Halo game, I mean, that will literally blow us away with its superb graphics and gameplay.

*facepalm*...It isn't going to be using an engine called the "AAA Engine" it will use the Halo: Reach engine.

You've never heard that expression before? "Triple-A" quality? As in good, not as in the name is "AAA".

So? The Halo engine never had a proper name other than "the halo engine" But now bungie's making a framework for games that aren't just Halo. They're using this engine for Reach AND more than likely their new IPs. Why would you name an engine the Halo engine if it's not destined to only make Halo games?

For now, this new engine is unnamed as far as we know. It's a AAA quality game engine. And the engine used for the previous Halo games was officially called the "Halo Engine". Although it was used in one other non-halo game (Stubbs The Zombie). But basically, the Halo Engine has been used to make Halo only games with the exception of one game. The new Engine for Halo: Reach doesn't have an official name yet, but you can rest assured that it is not using the same engine that the previous Halo games used.

Bungie never used the same engine for Halo: CE, Halo 2 and and Halo 3. The engines were all different.

Furthermore, people need to calm down a bit. The graphics in this game will be good no doubt. The graphics however won't be anything eye-popping since the Xbox 360 has limited processing abilities. Unless the levels in Halo Reach are small and claustrophobic, the graphics aren't gonna be anything spectacular than what we've already seen on the Xbox 360.

Well, there is still that DirectX 11 coming out which should be able to milk a bit more power out of the 360. And the game engines in all three games are basically the same. They were just heavily modified in each other. Haven't you noticed that in all 3 games there were several similarities? An example would be the physics in Halo 2 and Halo 3 where when you die from an explosion your body tends to land in the same position as it does in Halo 1. This can also be observed in Stubbs The Zombie which uses the Halo Engine.

  • 08.06.2009 9:14 PM PDT

Bring Back Rocket Race!!!

You know, now that I think about it. The Halo 3 Engine actually does push the Xbox 360 close to its limits. Even though it's a heavily modified version of the Halo 2 Engine, it still does use a lot of power from the 360. In fact, I think that Halo 3 actually pushes the 360 so much that it can cause the xbox 360 to overheat and have problems later on. If Halo Reach uses an even more powerful game engine, it could really push the xbox 360 past what it can handle.

I wonder if it's possible to overclock the xbox 360 cpu and gpu like you can on the PC maybe then, Halo Reach could run smoothly on the 360 without frying your console.

It's not just the graphics, man. It's the whole ENGINE.

What I'm more concerned about is how flexible the engine is. How many events can happen in the game that aren't scripted? Will soft bodies be used? If so on what? I'm concerned about how flexible the tools are to allow the artists to have maximum creative freedom, not what the artists will do with that freedom.

But then again, the power can come from the 360 calculating things it doesn't need to calculate. As long as there's another feature to add there's a way to simplify it into something that looks like a lot, but is actually a little.
