I'm pretty sure Halo has used a different engine for every Halo game.

Well, like I said before, the engines could be considered different. But they are technically modified improved versions of each other.

You know, I've been so wrapped up in Halo ODST that I haven't really thought about that. Wonder what the Graphics will be like?

  • 08.08.2009 11:12 PM PDT

Were it so easy.

Wow, I'm really hyped for it now, both articles look very promising, I can't wait too see the graphics, though gameplay is the important thing, its so cool to see visually stunning effects and scenery, it brings it all together in one beautiful package.

Okay, I'm not reading through 7 pages, so if it has been posted, sorry.

"AAA engine" means tripple A engine, as in...good.

AAA games, halo, cod and the popular ones.

It's like saying: "I just head EA were working on a new tripple A title".

A way of saying, top of the range, very good.

But, if they said it is a AAA engine, they might be customizing the current engine (havok for physics I think?).
:)

Well, since they haven't officially named the engine yet, we're just calling it the AAA Engine for now. I guess we could call it the Halo: Reach engine though. And the physics engine is actually kind of separate from the graphics engine. Halo Reach will most likely use the Havok Physics Engine. But as for its graphics engine, that's where the AAA Engine thing comes in.

You know, now that I think about it. The Halo 3 Engine actually does push the Xbox 360 close to its limits. Even though it's a heavily modified version of the Halo 2 Engine, it still does use a lot of power from the 360. In fact, I think that Halo 3 actually pushes the 360 so much that it can cause the xbox 360 to overheat and have problems later on. If Halo Reach uses an even more powerful game engine, it could really push the xbox 360 past what it can handle.

I wonder if it's possible to overclock the xbox 360 cpu and gpu like you can on the PC maybe then, Halo Reach could run smoothly on the 360 without frying your console.

The Halo 3 Engine doesnt push the 360 to its limit...Look at the CryEngine 3 or Id Tech 5..this Engines pushing the 360 to its limit.
The Halo 3 engine is an improved Halo 2 Engine..watch some Youtube Videos from the old Alpha Halo 3 build and u will see.

The Halo 3 Engine, despite being an advanced version of the Halo 2 Engine does really push the Xbox 360 close to its limits. Yes, there are better engines. But Halo 3 Engine is one of the best ones there. If a PC port was made of the Halo 3 Engine, it would require a pretty good amount of power from your PC.

Yeah, the specs required to run that leak on your PC were through the roof.

-blam!- off, troll. If there was EVER a visually sub-par and ugly FPS series, it's the COD series.

Call of Duty's graphics were not 10 times better. They are comparable to Halo 3's graphics, but not 10 times better.

Wait... What did you mean by leak? You can't play Halo 3 on the PC yet. There are no PC ports.

i think bungie is going to try to raise the bar with good graphics this time. i hope they don't show a trailer saying it will look like this, but look alot worse.

Yay, now I get to look at prettier pixels.

I could care less if Reach went back to looking like Halo CE or all my enemies were just cubes that could somehow hold weapons, as long as the game is good. Seriously, how often do you stop in the middle of a game to look at scenery?

Well, when it comes to large maps and missions. I might sometimes stop and gaze in awe at the huge amazing scenery. In Halo 3, sometimes when you look at the sky, you see some pretty impressive things. Graphics aren't a priority for me, but it would make my game experience a lot better.

Seth White

If they do use a different game engine, it wouldn't matter. Bungie is a great company and I think they will make the game great no matter what. Plus, some people would like Halo to take a different turn.

I'll be utterly pissed if Bungie were to not use a new engine for this game to be honest. Halo 3 ODST can get away with using the same engine as its predecessor given the fact it's marketed as an expansion and has Halo 3 in the name. But the tech behind those games is at least 3 years old. And even then people complained about Halo 3 looked when it first released. Reach using the same, or modified, engine as it's 2 year old companion would not be met with better criticism.

So I'm hoping they don't re-use any assets for this game, whether it be graphics, animation, physics, etc. Hopefully Bungie has built some new tech to power this game.

I believe the physics will stay the same. They might tweak it a little bit though. But in every Halo game so far, they've always used the Havok Physics Engine.

If yall love Halo and Bungie so MUCH. THEN Y IS THE ONLY THING YALL DOING IS ITCHIN!!!!
I've been playin Bungie games on my Mac even before the days of Pathways, Abuse, Marathon, marathon: Durandal, Marathon: Infinity, Soulblighting on MYTH 1 & 2 (even myth3 that they didn't do),Oni and I WAITED 2 YEARS for halo to come out THEN Bungie was bought by Microsoft and I waited another 2 years for HALO to be totally remade in to HALO:CE for this new stinkin console called an XBOX (which we love so much). FOR HALO I left the computer gaming world and was the only one in my town that had an Xbox and halo during the Launch shortage....for HALO. EVER sence day one Bungie has been breakin down the doors with somthin new and is one of the few only companies like Blizzard Entertainment that refuse to put out a crappie product. I may suck at Halo but I LOVE (I repeat) I LOVE BUNGIE & HALO. Be appreciative of the products they have brought us OR DON'T BUY THEM!! Bungie will put out their product when its good and ready they will also tell us how and what its made of when they are good and ready to say so. If all we do is pressure them........It's good to give suggestions but don't be hypocritical by sayin you love halo, then Itch/moan and groan about Bungie makin halo.
BUNGIE DO WHAT YOU DO! Take your time and break new ground like you always have. FELLOW Xboxers have faith....BUNGIE always delivers.

P.S. BUNGIE
U Still Got a Faithful Few...........and we ain't goin nowhere
Hell Jumpers are in the tubes............WE'RE READY TO DROP!!!!!!

When you play Halo 3 on the console, you can really tell its taking a lot of power. It's not like when you play an original xbox game, the console is fairly quiet. When you play Halo 3, the console makes quite a lot of noise especially with the fans spinning. That's a sign of how much power Halo 3 requires.

Just because it doesn't look the best doesn't mean it's not a resource whore.

For all I know, the Halo 3 engine could be a crapily coded POS that's just an overly complex way of doing simple things and wastes power. But I don't. Some things in the engine could suffer from being built off of an old engine, but nothing too bad. Maybe it it enough to needlessly push the 360 to it's limit.

There are plenty of things in Halo 3 that take up lots of resources. Real-Time Reflections are an example but they generally aren't used that much except in campaign. The game's water effects are pretty good too. Lighting is also an improvement that requires a good amount of resources. And the fact that in the Halo 3 Campaign, there was a huge level called The Covenant where you had an all out vehicle battle including air and ground vehicles as well as two scarabs, really surprised me that it didn't cause incredible lag. But it probably was pushing the 360 to its limits during those large mission parts.

Here’s what Luke had to say about the differences in treatment between the Spartans and Elites in Reach:

“Instead of piece-by-piece customization like the Spartans, Elite customization is a full model swap with models selected from the various Elite classes appearing throughout the Campaign. There are all kinds of reasons for this, not the least of which is our continued emphasis on the Spartan as your identity in Reach.”
