Well, that's the thing with ODST.
----

...but the visual style is still a bit noticeably outdated compared to newer games like Modern Warfare 2. As I much as I hate to admit that, it's true. MW 2's graphics are beyond Halo 3: ODST graphics.

Modern Warfare 2's Engine is outdated too...sry,if u compare CoD4 and MW2..they look like the same..MW2 got some little Tech Update...but its the same...

Then what is the best game with the most up to date engine?

Gears 2, crysis, KZ2 (sorry to say), list goes on.

PS: A visual style cannot be "outdated". It's a STYLE. Not quality.

Bring Back Rocket Race!!!

Technically, the visual style can be outdated. What if Bungie decided to save time and money by making the visual style in Halo: Reach similar to visual styles in the 1950's? That's right, 8-bit gaming graphics. So those visual styles are definitely out of date.

  • 09.25.2009 9:22 PM PDT

Im going to be the one to say it....Xbox graphically blows. Wait, here's more. The so called 1080p on the games on xbox are modulated. That said as just an opener. I think there will be better graphics, but better graphics doesnt always equal a better game. Superficially it does but not gameplay. Remember that. It should turn out well, keep it fresh bungie!

Again. Style isn't the same thing as graphics.

Style is the difference between Okami and Killzone 2.

Graphics is the difference between Crysis and quake.

*Off the record, 1950's graphics weren't even 1 bit. It was a white block on a black screen.

What I'm really hoping for is fresh feeling gameplay. I was playing ODST today and (can't believe I'm saying this) But I'm actually BORED with Halo 3's gameplay. I just can't fdo it anymore. Now, 3 years was a good run... But something new'd better come up quick.

Well, ODST is just an expansion to Halo 3. So the gameplay will be a bit familiar. Personally, I liked ODST a lot, but I agree that the gameplay is getting kind of old now. The graphics weren't that bad though. A little bit of improvement from Halo 3.

Hopefully like crysis PC graphics LOL, or just like Crysis on medium settings atleast...oh played Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts here? Amazing Graphics. Why dont Reach use that Graphics LOL.

Does anybody know of a game that is already using an "AAA" engine?

  • 09.28.2009 6:30 AM PDT

Betatesters are disposable.

I didn't read the entire thread, but here are some thoughts of mine:

At first, when a game which is currently in progress uses any engine, this doesn't neccesarily mean that this engine is complete. There is much work on a game to do, that isn't engine related. You even could use parts of other engines and put them together etc.

I did some research and i found... not much. But AAA seems to be some kind of a classifiaction. Consider the fact the job description reads "in a AAA game engine" - could be any actual 3D-Engine

So i'll shorten my post:

I think, when this is a complete new engine, it won't be used by Reach, but it will be used on the next generation of xbox. Even a engine needs some years of developing (Unreal Engine 3 took 4 years for example).

But it's also possible that it's just somekind of advanced version of the halo 3 engine - in that case im sure halo reach will use it.

In any case, i believe Reach will have better graphics then ODST, but the difference won't be much - whatever this engine is somehing complete new or not. the 360 quite has approached her limits.
Remember: XBox 360 is almost 4 years old and even at this point the hardware specs were nothing special.

So it's time for an new XBox to beat crysis in the face :D

It sounds really cool, but I dont want that feeling, ''I'm playing Halo'' to disappear, as if your playing Halo on a call of duty 4 engine more like how you run how everything is played. They haven't dissapointed me yet with their Halo games and I dont think they will do it now.

Bring Back Rocket Race!!!

Hey, to all those saying that the Xbox 360 can't handle a whole new game engine for Halo that can compare to Crysis, well you may be wrong. I found an article on the internet about a new Xbox 360 coming out sometime in 2010. This isn't some random article with made up info. If you watched the news, Steve Ballmer (CEO of Microsoft) announced that the new Xbox 360 would come out in 2010 and would have Project Natal incorporated into it. He didn't say much about any other improvements to the new 360, but you can probably expect some improvements to the CPU, GPU, and RAM of the 360. Those improvements would allow for better games with better graphics to be on the 360. Crysis is about to become outdated in graphics. And I also think it's likely the new Xbox 360's will support DirectX 10.

Here is a link to the article:

http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/42919/118/

I wouldn't really consider the new Xbox 360 to be the next-gen Xbox but more like an improved modern xbox 360. It's still a bit too early to go into next-gen consoles. But then again, most of the current-gen consoles are getting huge price cuts which indicate that the current generation of gaming is starting to fade a way and a new generation is on the horizon.

Also, since Halo: Reach and the new 360 comes out in 2010, Halo: Reach may possibly be graphically amazing with ultra-realistic graphical environments. Crysis compared to Halo: Reach on the new 360's would be like Super Mario Bros. compared to Halo 3: ODST. Of course, not much is known yet about the new 360 so it's still a bit too early to make any judgments.

I think there is always room for change, Yes the AAA engine might not be finished, but what if its better than the engine bungie are allready using when it comes out, i would prefer for bungie to delay the game than keep using an engine that is worse than one they could be using to make Reach the best it can be, as i see it, bungie have alot to make up for in the promises department, i loved halo 3, but it promised more than it delivered, and i dont want to lose more faith in bungie because they do the same again, i was expecting this huuuge amazing ending for halo 3 where the chief sacrifices himself to save the human race, because thats what the marketting suggested, but no, that didnt happen, and i know im rambling at the moment, but i think it is relevant, this engine could help bungie redeem themselves and make a game worthy of their creativity, halo 3 was nowhere near as good as it could have been, and i dont want to see them make the same mistake again, thats why i think ODST is a great move for bungie, they can make another great game, out of another game, which means people know what to expect, making it hard to get dissapointed, people that will buy ODST will be people that loved halo 3, but the people that didnt wont buy it, wheras Reach is moving in a completely different plot direction, and yeah its based on the fall of reach so we already know whats going to happen, but when was the last time you saw a film or game based on a book that stayed completely accurate, lotr left out one of the biggest chapters, the scouring of the shire, when saruman takes his remaining forces and pilages the shire, then frodo and the gang go and save it, but the thing is they had already filmed it, you see the footage too, in the first film when frodo looks into lady galadriels mirror, the reason they kept it out was because the film was too long, but it wasnt even in the extended version, or any other version, and i dont want to see bungie do the same with Reach, i want everything in there, and i want it to look and play spectacularly, so if Reach is a month from being completed with the current engine being barely what they promised (kike halo 3, and dont get me wrong i think halo 3 is the best game ever made), then the AAA engine is released, i would prefer for them to delay it for as long as it takes to use the AAA engine to make it a game worth their merit, one that will be challenging games in quality for years to come. do it right bungie!

Cool story, bro.

And BTW the graphics will be amazing.

There may be a new version of the 360 with the project natal integrated. But if they would make the other hardware bether, what would they get? It still would be another console. Then you can't play the games for this "new" 360 on the old won, at least not on the same quality. Or, on the otherside, you wouldn't have any advancement on the new console compared to the old - because the game must be playable in same quality on both systems. Another option would be to do a lot of the work twice - like for two consoles. But yeah, i think it still would be possible.

@ Project Offset Stuff:
This Studio is making a game (Project Offset) and an engine (Offset engine) - which is an AAA Engine. Again, AAA is a sort of classification, not an engine name.
Besides, I believe this game will have better graphics than crysis (on proper pcs) but i think it's only 20% done yet and won't be out before 2011 - in my opinion.

Also i think the next generation xbox (not natal) will come 2011/2012 - but who knows what crazy plans microsoft is going to realize

Actually, you should still be able to play all the 360 games. According to Microsoft, it's still an Xbox 360. It just has newer performance hardware like RAM or Graphics Card. But as long as the system software and core components remain the same, the 360 games should still work just as good. And I don't think the quality difference will be that huge. You have to remember that the resolution of all Xbox 360 games is limited to 1080p. So the resolution of the games won't change. However, what can be improved is lighting in games and anti-aliasing. But otherwise, you shouldn't notice any compatibility differences. It won't be like playing original xbox games on the 360.

Uuuuuh Halo1 is diff. to Halo 2 and Halo2 is way diff. then Halo3 and for all those who stopped playing Halo3 b/c it was not as good as Halo 1 or 2 WOULD LOVE FOR THIS TO HAPPEN!!! Hopefully make the gameplay more like Halo2 but enhanced graphics with a better campaign Oh and make better maps Halo1 and sidewinder and Hang em' High And Halo2 had Lockout, Midship, Turf, Elongation, Warlock, Sanctuary, Burial Mounds, Beaver Creek, I may have missed some but all those were great maps, not like Halo 3 which to me only has 2 decent maps

Crysis 2 has actually been confirmed for 360 and PS3, so we'll have to wait and see. The graphics are either going to be dumbed down, or they're going to have done something crazy with the graphics engine to make it super-efficient.

  • 10.01.2009 9:47 PM PDT

bungie has proven that a bunch of monkeys sitting in front of keyboards can randomly type out a masterpiece. the thing is, when you go to play the masterpiece, you cant help but notice all the monkey s**t smeared all over it.

it gets real old having to wait months for someone like mlg to clean off all the monkey poo.

you guys are dumb. its referring to how reach is expected to be a triple A title, just like the previous halo's, gears and cod.

a B game would be something like shadowrun or army of two, where the developer hasnt really proven themselves, and the game they release doesnt really have much staying power.

That game looks like a great example of the saying "Graphics don't make a game."

Really, the animations were disgusting and gameplay looked boring and repetitive. Sounds were also awful, music was did set the mood that I think it tried to achieve however.
