Hmm.

Well while I wish they'd switched to Unreal 3, this will be good as well. New Engine = Better Graphics and Physics. Good to see Bungie get away from Havok, it's simply god-aweful compared to other Graphics Engines out there.

Havok is not a graphics engine. It is a physics engine. There's a difference between the two. The past 3 Halo games have used a game engine called The Halo Engine. They also used the Havok Engine for physics. You can expect Halo: Reach to continue using the Havok Physics Engine. But as for the graphical engine, that's where the changes will be made.

Halo 1 used a completely different engine than Halo 2 and 3. It did not use Havok.

No actually it did use Havok. Every Halo game so far has used Havok for the physics. You can obviously tell by the way bodies land when you die from certain types of explosion. The bodies will always land in a certain position which happens in all 3 Halo games indicating they used the same physics engine. This can also be observed in the game Stubbs The Zombie which also uses the Halo Engine which includes Havok.

Ok, please find Halo: Combat Evolved for me.

Hmm, you're right. I always thought they used the same physics engine because Halo 2 and Halo 3 still have a slight Halo 1 feel. Alright, I guess you're right about the physics engine. But the actual game engine itself is still very similar in all 3 games. Halo 2 and Halo 3 have the most similar engines.

i think bungie is going to try to raise the bar with good graphics this time. i hope they don't show a trailer saying it will look like this, but look alot worse.
why would they do that? they would make the graphics look good so more people will want 2 buy it.

I read a news article that Halo: Reach will not be using the standard Halo Engine. Instead it will be using something known as the "AAA Engine". You can read the article here:

http://www.gameguru.in/first-person-shooters/2009/16/halo-rea ch-aaa-engine/

Based on the article, it seems Halo Reach is supposed to have graphics that are like 10 times better than Halo 3. Anyone else have more info on this new "AAA Engine"?

"AAA Engine?" sounds like i will be able to have liability on my game...(knee slapper)

Euphoria for character models and havok for environmental objects...that would be amazing but then again this isn't Force Unleashed

Well, Halo has always had Havok for it's physics engine except for Halo 1. The graphics engine is something that Bungie usually makes themselves. I doubt Bungie is going to use someone else's game engine to make Halo: Reach.

Since halo is microsofts, im sure they can tell bungie to do what they want. like " use this engine please ;D"

I don't think so. Microsoft owns the rights to make Halo related merchandise. But Bungie still have the right to decide how they want to make the game.

I hope we see some more info soon.

My hopes are starting to get too high. Bungie, just hurry up and squander them. I'm almost sure you will anyway. Not too much. But just enough to let me know Microsoft rushed you through it and it wasn't your fault. lol.

Even if Reach is not built with a new game engine i would love to see improved graphics. Bungie seems to like to put a weird texture or pattern on everything, nothing can be truly smooth. Even though i'm not a halo wars fan id have to say its cut scene graphic make halo three look like a Xbox original. Also halo threes universal lighting tends to make the imperfections shine and overall make things look worse. For reach i would like to see the colors toned down a bit, not so bright. If you watch a cut scene from halo wars and look at the covenant equipment its not necessarily bright purple but its a metal looking color with a purple tinge making it look more like the purple alloy its supposed to be instead of the painted purple effect it has now. I recommend you look up halo wars cut scenes if you haven't already seen any and take a peak at there graphics! it will make you cry and wish halo wars had bean an FPS... (JK)

All of these sources are freaking stupid.

The job exists because the engine has not yet been created, which means it can not possibly be Reach, as Reach already has a playable engine.

True, but nothing has been revealed about that new engine. And the date for those articles was around the time of E3 which is when developers were discussing about their new games. That's probably where those sources come from. The AAA Engine probably already has been created, but the developers weren't allowed to comment too much on the new engine. I'm sure there are plently of other sources.

I think you missed the point. It doesn't matter what sources have this article and information. The point is that these AAA Engine jobs are still posted, which means that the whole "AAA Engine" thing is not related to Reach, as Reach already has a playable game engine. Reach assuredly has a new engine, yes, but it is definitely not the one spoken about in any of these articles, and so people getting excited over the "AAA" descriptor should calm themselves down a bit or they'll find themselves disappointed.

I don't think you realize this but there is still over a year before Halo: Reach comes out. 1 year is a lot of time to create or tweak a game engine. Those job listings are probably for tweaking or improving the game engine. Which is why they're releasing a beta early next year which is still a long time away. In my opinion, Halo: Reach is only 50% complete at this point. They have the script and story laid down, but they're still working on the game engine and other stuff.

I thought it was the beta that released Fall 2010, not the actual game itself.

The thing with Halo Wars cutscenes is that they are all pre-rendered. All the other Halo games use real-time cutscenes. Pre-rendered cutscenes are generally better than Real-Time cutscenes. But Bungie does a good job making real-time cutscenes.

Yes most likley halo cutscenes are rendered using Maya's 3D max which is probably the same program they use to design the characters.

No, Halo cutscenes except for Halo Wars are rendered in real time which means that when you reach a cutscene, the game takes over the character and basically controls everything from there. The game is still going on. Basically the cutscene is happening while the game is being played. Halo cutscenes are not videos that start playing when you reach a certain moment. That is why in Halo cutscenes, if you move something in the way of the cutscene before it happens, that object will get in the cutscene. Or, in Halo 1, if you kill yourself right as a cutscene starts, the cutscene will continue but your dead body will be showing. In some cases, the game may still try and take control of the dead body and you will have a dead body moving around in the cutscenes in Halo 1.

Halo Wars's cutscenes are videos that are made already. When you finish the mission, the game stops going and the videos start playing. That is way different than how other Halo cutscenes work. I don't know what Halo Wars cutscenes are rendered by. But Halo 1,2, 3, and ODST cutscenes are rendered using the actual game engine. Sometimes in Halo 3, there is a glitch where you can still play during a cutscene. Everything in the cutscenes still happens except you're still playing while it is happening.

So Halo Cutscenes can be altered and changed. Halo Wars cutscenes cannot be changed because they are pre-rendered. Hope that clears up any confusion about how cutscenes work in the Halo games.

halo reach will be a ONlINE BETA IT WONT HAVE A CAMPAIGN BUT SOEMTHING BUNGIE HAS NEVER DONE BEFORE. sorry caps. yes i might have a campaing but it will be all co-op.

I know they are pre-rendered but i'm just pointing out things like color and texture problems, also if you look at games like kill zone, mass effect (excluding their hair), and COD 4 the graphics in reach could be greatly improved.

I actually don't recall any cutscenes in COD 4. The part where they show the maps and your next mission don't really count. And they're all pre-rendered as well.

No.

The graphics in COD4 are AGES behind their time. :/

All I'd really like in the engine is object based motion blur. THe screen based BS gets on my god damn nerves.

I'd hope there's a new engine. Halo 3: ODST was the only game thus far that Bungie said didn't use a new engine, and clearly because they didn't see it as a whole game in its own right (it's still Halo 3).

I hope they work on the physics more. Havok is fine, but it needs to be improved. When spartans die, they shouldn't bounce much. Their armour is heavy and made of rather solid metal and other almost-as-heavy materials, all accumulating to no less than half a ton. I also they work on making the damage inflicted on a player represented accurately on the character model, akin to how warthog damage is done.

Hopefully, this engine ups the ante.

  • 08.25.2009 8:15 PM PDT

It says they have to be able to work "in a AAA Engine" NOT "the AAA Engine". It's just a game engine that's used to make AAA games, not a specific engine. Halo 3 engine = AAA Engine. CoD 4/WaW/MW2 Engine = AAA engine. WoW = AAA Engine. Starcraft 2 = AAA Engine. They don't use the same engine, they just use a really good one.
