The Heart of the War

PROLOGUE:
Private Timothy Coi unzipped his green UNSC standard issue duffle bag to reveal his matte black ODST armor, his ass kicking uniform. With almost thoughtless motion he methodically pulled out each peice of armor. First his helmet, then the chest and shoulders, then all the arm and leg armor plates that came together to make the baddest look a UNSC soldier could have. He is an ODST, a helljumper, and one the meanest sons a' guns you'll come across in the whole damn universe... or at least that's how he felt as he prepared to deploy on the surface of the the most dangerous warzone in human conntrolled space... Earth.

The year is 2546, war against physically and technologically more advanced alien bastards scorches the surface of planets all around the galaxy. Earth, however is safe from this threat for now. That's everyone elses problem. Instead, rioters and insurrectionists have gotten a little out of hand and decided it would be a good idea to assault two UNSC Military Police Officers standing gaurd outside of the governer's office in Philadelphia, North America. Both of them were killed which must have gotten people a little wound up. And that is where this story starts.

CHAPTER 1: Tim Coi, Civilian Chump

Tim Coi, 19 years old, standing 6 foot 3 inches and weighing 200 pounds graduated from Davidson Senior High School with great expectations of what fate would hand to him in the next stage of his life. With his high school degree now framed all proud and shiny on the wall of the living room in the apartment he, his mother, and his sister shared he simply sat and waited for something good to happen. Keeping in touch with his friends and girlfriend through mail, he sat back and watched the world move around him, watched his world move around him.

Tim would continue this pattern of life for two weeks of his summer vacation. Eat, eat, drink, drink beer, drink too much beer, sleep, play sports with friends, go over to girlfriend's house, kiss girlfriend, eat, eat, drink beer, fall asleep for a long long long time. That's right, Tim Coi is just a normal chump like anyone else around you. This all changed after a man in a bright white and gray uniform showed up at the door of the apartment, bearing bad news.

The man was named Major Colin Ward, and he had come to tell the Coi's about Tim's father, or lack of father... Marshall Coi was a long time military entheusiest, he knew about all of the famous battles that have occured throughout history. He even studied Military History in college. When the war against the aliens broke out Marshall wanted to stay away from it for the sake of his wife and new family, this did not last long. Marshall's uncle was killed in an invasion of some far away planet. Marshall could no longer resist the temptation to avenge the lost member of his family. He joined the UNSC marines, dropping out of spaceships onto wartorn planets would become the next 14 years of his life.Lieutenant Marshall Coi was killed in action on planet Juno on July 7th, 2545. It had taken a full year for the news to reach the remains of the Coi family.

Major Colin Ward was in command of the strike force that Tim's father was a part of, Marshall and his entire squad were killed by alien mortar fire. As Tim learned this, he became only a shell of the happy young man he was moments earlier. All had been sucked from his insides except feelings of hate and the will to get his revenge on the enemy that had seemed so distant until now. Tim was going to get them back for this, and he could think of no better way to do it than the way his father did. As a helljumper.

CHAPTER 2: Enlistment

Tim attended the memorial service at a military cemetary outside of the city. Only a day later, he marched straight up to the UNSC recruitment center and signed up. The place looked as if no one had set foot in it in weeks. A gray haired man with a solid looking face sat behind a desk doing paperwork, not expecting the 6 foot 3 inch former high school sports star to walk up to him and salute.
"Are you here to sign up son, or is this just another prank?" the recruitment officer mumbled
"There is no prank that I know of sir. I'm here to enlist for the Orbital Drop Shock Troopers."
"Kid now why on Earth would you wanna do a thing like that?"
"My father was an ODST sir. He was killed in action in the battle of Juno sir"
"Is that so, are you sure you wanna do this? I know you want to get some payback for what happened, but don't let that lead you to any bad decisions"
"It won't sir, I have thought this through and I know I want to serve with the ODSTs. I want to be with the best"
"That's what they all say..." said the recruitment officer with a slow sigh
"Sir, I want to enlist. I have no doubt in my mind that I can do this."
"Ok, you wanna join a unit with a 90% casualty rate be my guest" Said the man, pulling out a paper and handing it to Tim. "Just fill out this sheet"
Tim hesitated for a breif moment, then touched pen to paper and sealed his destiny. he was going to beome an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper, the craziest bastards you'll ever come across. And he was ready. Tim handed the paper to the enlistment officer and saluted one more time.
"Good luck son, that's about all you can hope for once you get out there. Welcome to the UNSC"

CHAPTER 3: Ship out

Tim was all signed up. He had recieved his tickets to board a transport ship headed for a colony called Tantalus where there is an ODST training camp. Tim's mother had been reduced to nothing but a crying mess, she barely noticed or cared when Tim hugged her and left for the spce station. Those who had noticed him leaving were his girlfriend and little sister, they cried and cried in his living room. But Tim needed to leave this behind. He had a new world to see, and he had tickets to get there.

With a few kisses and hugs from family members Tim was off. At the space station in Chicago he was loaded onto a large transport ship called the New Beginnings, what a coincidence. The ship would move up into orbit in 14 hours, this gave Timothy a chance to look around. In the crowd he ran into Jake Morcello, an athelete from another high school in Tim's town. jake had played sports with Tim since they were 12. It was good to see a familiar face.
"Where are ya headed?" asked Jake
"I'm all signed up, the UNSC"
"Wow, good for you. I hear things are gettin pretty bad out there, good luck"
"Thanks..." Said Timothy with a timid laugh "What about you? Where are you headed man?"
"I'm goin to my grandpa's car factory on Luna. It's the only job I could find right now"
"Oh that's cool. Good luck".
Suddenly a thick lne was drawn between Jake and Tim. Both of them could feel it. Jake could no longer face Tim equally, he was oing to work at a family business. Tim was on his way to the front lines of the alien apocolypse. Jake felt guilty he wasn't doing his part as well, and so they separated for the rest of the trip.

CHAPTER 4: Welcome to hell

The New Beginnings landed in the Aloia Space Port on July 20th. Tim was scared stiff, he had signed up to do this but now he wasnt sure if it was right. After doing a little research about ODSTs and their training Tim knew it was possible he could get hurt or even die right here on this planet so far from home. At that moment he decided that wasnt going to happen, Tim would survive and prosper as an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper. Or at least that's the game he would play with his mind until he got to camp.

Tim got to Camp Anderson, named after a famous ODST, on August 1st. There to great him was a 6 foot 7 monster named Sergeant Fox. The man had a crew cut, the man had shoulders the size of a normal mans body, but one thing he did lack was a soul. Tim and about 30 other quiet recruits marched off a bus in the middle of Camp Anderson with Sergeant Fox staring right at them. All 30 brave souls shivered in the rain that pelted them.
"Alright you sorry bastards! I am sergeant Fox. I don't care what your name is because all I'll ever call you until you show me you have some potential as a soldier is Boot. 15 of you boots report to the uniform issue building where you will do exactly as those fine men tell you is that clear?!". A handfull of men said yes sir but the rest simply carried their bags as quickly as the could to the building labled as "Uniforms".

"And the rest of you com with me... we're all gonna get a trim".
Tim knew military men needed to keep their hair short as part of the uniform. But that hadn't been in his thoughts in the last couple days, he was surprisingly startled. 15 young men followed Sergeant Fox ocross the rain drenchd camp to a building labled "Barber". They were ordered to get into 3 equal lines and to line up by one of the black barber chairs with your group of 5. 3 giddy barbers fired up electric clippers, stripping the young recruits of their personal identites. When it was Tim's turn he slowly eased into the chair, the barber quickly removed the neat civillian hairstyle on Tim's head. Within minutes nothing was left. Tim got out of the chair, not daring to feel his head, and stood over in the corner where the other recruits stood like a bunch of freshly shorn sheep. The last person in Tim's line of 5 was a tall woman with shoulder length blonde hair that was dyed red at the ends, looking scared and trying to squeeze out words from a frozen mouth.
"I don't care what you've got in your pants boot, you too!"
This was not necisarry, female soldiers in the UNSC needed to keep their hair 16 centimeters long at the most. But there sat the poor recruit, speechless as the barber finished crafting a short military buzz cut.

After all of the hair butcherings were over, the 15 recruits followed Sergeant Fox to the Uniform Issue building. Along the way they passed the other 15 boots. They stared with horrified looks on their faces at Tim and the other naked headed recruits, they awaited the same fate. At the uniform Issue building they asked you all of your clothing sizes, then gave you two neatly organized gray t-shirts, boots, pants, and other accessories.

After they all had been issued their training fatigues they followed Sergeant Fox out to the courtyard where the other team of 15 stood with thair fresh military cuts. Sergeant Fox and another man who didn't look half as tough as Fox stood beside him.
"Lisen up! Welcome to Orbital Drop Shock Trooper training. You all have already completed your initiation, so now we can get started on our real training. This man next to me is Sergeant Washington, he will be assissting me in turning you boots into something that resembles an ODST. You have already organized yourselves into two teams of 15, good. These 15 will be your squadmates for the time being. The 15 to my left will be training ith Sergeant Washington, you are red team. The other 15 I'm afraid are stuck with me for the next month. We are blue team. Good luck recuits. Welcome to the UNSC"

CHAPTER 5: What you're here for

Tim's eyes remained closed for a few hours in the rectangular barracks that was now his home in Fort Anderson. 14 other recruits also tossed and turned in their small bunks. The past day had been very traumtic for them all, after their pleasent introduction to the UNSC blue team went with Sgt. Fox on a 10 mile run and when they got back they were introduced to the helljumper workout. Tim slept more sound than any of the recruits in that barracks. He knew if his dad could make it through this, he most certainly could. So Tim slept knowing it would all ends at some point, he had nothing to worry about...

At 4:00 in the morning, Fox (As the recruits would learn call him when not in his presence) stomped into the barracks with an airhornand scared the living daylights out of the recruits who were sleeping near the door. Tim flinched, then took a long deep breath to try and drown the adrenaline that was racing through his body.

"Everybody up!" Yelled Fox, "Rise n' shine you sorry bunch of boots". Recruits groaned and rubbed their eyes. One feel right off of his bunk onto the tile floor, resulting in a small nosebleed. "Did I scare ya'?" Asked Fox, grinning at the stunned recruit as he stumbled to his feet. The 15 recruits eventually aligned in two rows in front of their bunks, that is just what they thought they should do. Only to be taunted by Fox until they got into straighter lines and then got dressed. After the morning fiasco, blue team was led out into the courtyard where they had recieved the introduction speech from Sgt. Fox. Tim knew what was coming next.

"Helljumper pushups... 100" Fox belched out. The recruits began, noticing Red Team as they stumbled from their barracks. "Hey! Pay attention before I make you start over". Blue team quickly returned to their pushups. Tim noticed the blonde haired girl doing the workout next to him, she was very pretty, even with almost no hair left on her head. She was doing her work just as well as him, maybe even better than him. She eventually finished, 10 pushups before Tim. The girl stood up with her ams at her side waiting for the next order from Fox. Tim was surprised, someone so beautiful shouldnt be in a place like this. But what could Tim do, she had volunteered just like the rest of the people there.

After Fox issued the rest of the workout, the sun was barely creeping over the mountains in the distance.
"Rest" Said Fox. Surprised, the recruits all bent over and caught their breath.
"Hey" Tim said to the blonde through quick breaths
"Hey" She answered back, still not paying any mind to Tim
"You sure seem to be on top of things..." Said Tim with a fake laugh
"Why do you care?"
"What?"
"What I mean is, does you talking to me have anything to do with me not having a dick?"
"Uh... No..." Tim replied, wishing he hadnt said anything
"Well then that's good. I'm Katy" The girl said sticking out her hand to shake. "Nice to meet you...?"
"Tim" He said filling in the missing name.
"Nice to meet you Tim" Said Katy shaking his hand

CHAPTER 6: Going through the motions

Tim wasn't really sure what to think. Katy must have just been messing with him when she asked why he cares. The two continued to talk for a few minutes until Fox ordered them to make two lines behind him. Blue team knew exactly what was coming next. Tim and Katy got in line next to one another. Blue team began jogging down the road that lead away from Fort Anderson

"I guess we're friends right?" Said Katy grinning at Tim
"Yeah, 'guess so" He replied.
Blue team ran all the way to the gate that they had come through on the bus the day before. Fox then turned around and started moving back down the road. Blue team followed, not knowing where he was leading them or what would happen when they got there. They were simply going through the motions.

CHAPTER 7: Firepower

Fox led Blue Team back through the camp, the run was already at 5 miles. When they passed the barracks they knew they were in for something new. Sgt. Fox stopped by a long building labled "ARMORY". He ordered Blue team to follow him inside but not to touch anything. Tim and Katy walked in to find a whole room full of UNSC rifles.
"I think we might be getting our guns" Whispered one recruit who was in the front of the line.
"You got that right boot. Except for the part where you called your rifle a gun" Said Fox as he picked up a black rifle with a scope mounted on it.
"This is a BR55HB rifle, the standard weapon of an ODST" he announced to Blue Team

"Now that's what I'm talking about.." Said one recruit as he stared at the rifle
"When ya' think were gonna be able to get our hands on one of those?" Katy asked Tim
"How am I supposed to know? I sure as hell hope it's soon though" whispered Tim
"Ya got that right.." answered Katy looking back at Fox
"After I show you how to take care of your rifle and how to load and unload it, you'll get one. So shut up and listen if you want a rifle today.

Fox would continue to show Blue team how to take apart the rifle, clean the rifle, and load the rifle. No it was time for him to show them how to unload it. Fox grabbed an ammo clip and shoved it into the rifle. He then walked over to the firing range on the other side of the Armory and took aim at the targets down range. he seemed to sink back into a past time when he was a real fighting ODST, he didnt focus on his recruits, or anything else... He simply looked down range through the scope and switched into some sort of Hell Jumper "ass kicking mode". Sgt. Fox Unloaded the entire rifle into the targets that were in front of him, hitting every single one in the forehead. Fox took a deep breath as if getting fresh air after being in a cramped room for an hour. He then lowered his rifle and turned to face the recruits

"That is how you unload the rifle..." Said Fox "Any questions?". The room was silent, in awe at the firepower that had just been unleashed before heir eyes. "Good..." whispered Sgt. Fox.

CHAPTER 8: Your sword, and your shield...

Tim and Katy looked at eachother, half deaf from the noise Sgt. Fox had just created in the Armory.
"Daayuuum..." Whispered Katy, a smile creaping across her face.
"Sir when do we get our rifles?" asked Tim, breaking the silence
"Right now boot! Step right up theres plenty for everybody..." Said Fox, back into his Sergeant mode. he began to pick up rifles from the racks on the walls and handing them to each recruit. When Tim got his he couldnt help but reveal a big smile. This wa his first step towards killing some of those alien bastards. he had forgotten about his fathers death due to all of the chaos of training. But now he remembered, and was angrier than a helljumper in peace time.

"Take good care of these weapons. Remember, this is your sword... this is your shield... ladies and gentlemen (This was the first time Fox had ever noticed Katy's precense as a female). Without it you arent nothin but a peice of meat wearing armor" Said Sgt. Fox. Blue Team stood awkwardly with their rifles in their hands, listening closely to Fox's words of wisdom. Tim and Katy stood together, now having truly entered the world of an ODST. Blue Team was now officialy an armed unit of the UNSC. And they were proud...
