Subject: Perhaps we'll play as Master Chief Again?

Lots of people are thinking we'll play as someone else-- another spartan, even a marine at times, or whatever.

However, this could just be a generic Halo reference, but the Halo: Reach trailer is 77 seconds, in other words 1:17. So could this be referencing that we'll play as our Dear John-117, aka Master Chief. Personally, I think it's a subtle hint.

Sorry if this has been said, but I really haven't seen it being mentioned.

Mythical Group

There is no greater catharsis than arguing on the Flood.

Well, for other reasons, it's very likely we'll play a young John. Look at the first top forum topic on the list.

"I'm afraid of the man I'll become if I lay my life down for the people I don't even care for"

The problem is that blue team's (MC was in it) op was more in space

Red team's (fred etc) op was on the ground.

I don't think bungie will throw in zero grav missions.

but hey, anythings possible

  • 07.26.2009 11:58 PM PDT

If you want to see the MC die, play Legendary. If you want to see MC finish the fight, play Halo 3. If you want to see MC finish the fight by dieing, why did you waste six years when you could have done it yourself right now?

Why does it matter? I for one, am going to throughly enjoy ODST for playing as someone OTHER then MC for a while, Reach won't be any better if you're MC either. He'll only have 3-4 lines in the game as it is.

If Crysis can do it, then so should we. MC's Reach mission would only be as long as a campaign mission, so I doubt it will work.

Oh, I know. I am especially looking forward to ODST's, but I just saw the reach trailer and i noticed the time. I picked up on what I think could be a hint, but I think I wouldnt mind to play as someone else. But I also think, as it is reach, playing MC's story might help.

The above poster mentions MC's mission being as long as a campaign mission. Could it still focus on him without the gameplay following him? How about a bonus mission you get after beating it? I dunno. I feel like the MC has to have a somewhat big role here.

Playing as him for a single mission could be done. Might be pretty cool too.

Here’s what Luke had to say about the differences in treatment between the Spartans and Elites in Reach:

“Instead of piece-by-piece customization like the Spartans, Elite customization is a full model swap with models selected from the various Elite classes appearing throughout the Campaign. There are all kinds of reasons for this, not the least of which is our continued emphasis on the Spartan as your identity in Reach.”

Not third person, so I don't care.

umm...? either way they'll look the same. I'm talking more from a story perspective.

"Young"?! Younger than Halo 2/ 3 maybe... You realize that the attack of Reach happened JUST before Halo 1, right? This is where the Spartans were getting the Mark V armor, and where (in the game cannon, not the book cannon) Master Chief becomes the last Spartan. Because we loose the battle here (if this is a spoiler to you, you're a moron), MC escape on the Pillar Of Autumn, making a blind jump that lands him on the first Halo.

Younger than... he was six in the book!?! The game can span much more than just the battles on reach, how about the Spartan's first mission? Without their armor. Zero G could definitely be done, I think it'd be great if Reach covered many different settings throughout the time span. Kinda like in 2 when we get to switch between the Arbiter and Chief, maybe we could switch between different Spartans perspectives.

We're talking about the FALL of Reach. He was much older than 6 when the Covenant glassed Reach... And that's what THIS GAME is about... Not his Spartan training... The Covenant only attacked Reach once, and it's described in my post above.

Well this game is about the fall of Reach, but Bungie hasn't said how early in the time line they are going to start the story, or maybe flashbacks are involved. Everyone rules out so many great ideas just because they think they know what the game is going to be like, try a little open mindedness.

This is a matter of cannon, and I don't mean the kind that goes "kaboom". The planet Reach is attacked once, and only once. Did you play Halo: Combat Evolved? Read the story bits in the manual? Read the related book to The Fall Of Reach?

I've read all the books so that's really not a problem, I'm not saying they should put non cannon material in the game, but the story has many sides to be told.

I say they should run with the game cannon and not the book cannon; having all the Spartans die so that 117 is the last one. That's probably what I don't like most about the books, is that there are other Spartans left... Well that, and they Name 117 as John, taking away from the idea of putting the player in the armor.

His name was revealed at the end of Halo 3, too, when Cortana refers to him as "John". It's a part of the story.

Why is what you say so incoherent? And there's no difference between game and book cannon, cannon is cannon, details that are established, these do not change given a different form of story telling.

  • 07.27.2009 1:41 AM PDT

How do people say that they can put themselves in MC"s shoes. He has an established character.

The rookie on the other hand does seem to be that though.

Part of the book stories, they didn't need that at the end. Really, it was far from necessary to name the Chief.

There is indeed a difference in the cannons. Bungie used to put stronger emphasis on that, but it seems more played down these days. The MAIN difference is in the number of Spartans, where they stressed the idea Of 117 being the last Spartan to play on old movies where one hero was the last of their kind making them more capable than others around them, and in that, making the player's roll more important. However, as for my inconsistencies in pointing out that one can read that 117 is much older than 6 at Reach where the new game will take place, it's because while the cannons differ, the time line is basically (if not exactly) the same. One can also read about the fall of Reach (very briefly, same with Harvest) in Halo: Combat Evolved's game manual, pages 4 and 5.

MC is designed to be an empty shell for players to jump into. His face, or even skin is never shown, his voice could be distorted by his armor, his personality is never examined, and so on, except in the books where the cannon is a bit different... This is exactly why they should have never named him.

The original BADFINGER! (the second)

Who keeps saying its based on the 'Fall of Reach'? because that was never confirmed.

I reckon it will take place in both 'Fall of Reach' and 'First strike' where you will swap between Spartans, ie john one mission, Fred the next...... and so on. Its called Halo Reach!..... therefore taking place on Reach most likely. If you've all read the books as you have all claimed you'd know, that John returns to Reach in search of his fellow Spartans, which means theres a HUGE chance that John will be a playable character.

Im almost willing to put money on it.

In the trailer, they show Reach in a condition that looks fine... And the people on the radio are surprised to see covenant... This is when Reach falls, sir.

And by fine, I mean undestroyed.

This is when Reach falls, but they never said that that's all the game will cover. I forget where I saw it but somebody from Bungie answered a question of where the game will take place and he responded by saying that it will take place on or near Reach, therefore many different perspectives could be played, one of which very well could be the Chief.
