I am a penguin. Every day I boogie on down to the water, and eat fish. Once, while fishing in the deepest depths, I saw great Cthulhu... And he said to me "Shine, to thine own self be true. They can't tell you what to do once you've gone guru." Also, I should tell you, "slide".

I've read all the books so that's really not a problem, I'm not saying they should put non cannon material in the game, but the story has many sides to be told.
I say they should run with the game cannon and not the book cannon; having all the Spartans die so that 117 is the last one. That's probably what I don't like most about the books, is that there are other Spartans left... Well that, and they Name 117 as John, taking away from the idea of putting the player in the armor.
His name was revealed at the end of Halo 3, too, when Cortana refers to him as "John". It's a part of the story.
Part of the book stories, they didn't need that at the end. Really, it was far from necessary to name the Chief.

Why is what you say so incoherent? And there's no difference between game and book cannon, cannon is cannon, details that are established, these do not change given a different form of story telling.
There is indeed a difference in the cannons. Bungie used to put stronger emphasis on that, but it seems more played down these days. The MAIN difference is in the number of Spartans, where they stressed the idea Of 117 being the last Spartan to play on old movies where one hero was the last of their kind making them more capable than others around them, and in that, making the player's roll more important. However, as for my inconsistencies in pointing out that one can read that 117 is much older than 6 at Reach where the new game will take place, it's because while the cannons differ, the time line is basically (if not exactly) the same. One can also read about the fall of Reach (very briefly, same with Harvest) in Halo: Combat Evolved's game manual, pages 4 and 5.

How do people say that they can put themselves in MC"s shoes. He has an established character.
The rookie on the other hand does seem to be that though.
MC is designed to be an empty shell for players to jump into. His face, or even skin is never shown, his voice could be distorted by his armor, his personality is never examined, and so on, except in the books where the cannon is a bit different... This is exactly why they should have never named him.
