When are people going to realize that good games are defined by two things, and two things only: Gameplay and Story.

Everything else (like gore) comes second to those two things. To take a game like Halo and claim that tacking on something like excessive gore would make it better is ridiculous. Yes, some games benefit from the addition of gore from a solely aesthetic point of view, but I can't imagine any way in which it would benefit Halo.

I'd personally be horrified to see a mangled Grunt.

WTF???? Isnt that every Halo fans dream to overkill a grunt even more than we already can im gonna shoot his leg off with a shotty :)

I've always thought that the most important part of an fps comes down to how satisfying it is to kill an enemy, and the BEST way (though not necesesasarily the ONLY way) is to make their deaths look as realistic as possible through high quality blood/gore animations + ragdoll physics.

Halo is one of the only games that lacks the aforementioned effects, yet yields satisfying kills.

In Halo, there is absolutely no gore or dismemberment whatsoever, and the blood effects are minimalistic and extremely unrealistic. In addition, Halo 3 has the most broken version of havok physics I have ever seen in a game. (when a missile explodes at your feet, you do not scream "ahhhhhhh!" while swinging your arms around and flying through the air)

Yet the kills are still satisfying through other elements in the game that contribute to satisfying kills.

If the halo engine was updated to contain say, half life 2 quality death effects, the result would be a game that is unbelieveably satisfying to play.

You clearly don't get it. When people say they like the blood and gore from Gears of War, they are not saying they like the game. They are only saying that they like the blood and gore from Gears of War.

Here’s what Luke had to say about the differences in treatment between the Spartans and Elites in Reach:

“Instead of piece-by-piece customization like the Spartans, Elite customization is a full model swap with models selected from the various Elite classes appearing throughout the Campaign. There are all kinds of reasons for this, not the least of which is our continued emphasis on the Spartan as your identity in Reach.”

And more is not necessary, personal preference here.
