I've always thought that the most important part of an fps comes down to how satisfying it is to kill an enemy, and the BEST way (though not necesesasarily the ONLY way) is to make their deaths look as realistic as possible through high quality blood/gore animations + ragdoll physics.
Halo is one of the only games that lacks the aforementioned effects, yet yields satisfying kills.
In Halo, there is absolutely no gore or dismemberment whatsoever, and the blood effects are minimalistic and extremely unrealistic. In addition, Halo 3 has the most broken version of havok physics I have ever seen in a game. (when a missile explodes at your feet, you do not scream "ahhhhhhh!" while swinging your arms around and flying through the air)
Yet the kills are still satisfying through other elements in the game that contribute to satisfying kills.
If the halo engine was updated to contain say, half life 2 quality death effects, the result would be a game that is unbelieveably satisfying to play.
