Always here to help! Just ask me how!
In Halo 3, the fine folks at Bungie attempted to remove or mitigate lag. The most notable method was the melee system. They started with a system that attempted to make a "contest" where the one with the most damage won. This led to some odd discrepancies and strange random wins being awarded. Bungie abandoned this system for a system that could make both players die. This also seems somewhat unsatisfying, especially if you use it in system link or split screen. This causes a completely unnecessary contest for combating lag and can, in some situations, interfere with the game. (This can be seen most publicly in MLG games where it leads to toss up games, but I have encountered it at my own LAN parties.)
What I would like to see is a method of choosing different network latency correction schemes. These would be only chosen in custom games, may it be split screen, LAN, or even online. The use of this is blatantly easy to see in LAN or split screen situations, but would be useful online if you are playing with people you know are near you or with good connections.
The obvious schemes would be the existing melee contest method, with some minor tweeks or improvements. Overall it seems to work quite well online in matchmaking. Other schemes could be a flat out first player wins situation like it Halo 2 and 1. You could also switch to the first Halo 3 method of random death if you found that worked.
On the more extreme end, having the option to change the window for the beat down contest would also be useful. This would effect the amount of time the two players would have to hit each other to make the "both players die" situation happen.
Honestly, this would most appeal to MLG players, as they would want more control over their network situations, but I can see it applying to any custom game players.
