I know what people will be thinking, that Halo: Reach isn't the first step towards a Halo movie, a Halo movie that many claim is quite dead. I, however, think that it is the first of many steps towards the Halo movie that many of us are hoping for.
So, you all cry, where's the proof?
Well, as with all things Halo and Bungie orientated, a person never gets to see that proof until they have it in front of them. But hopefully this will help point you all in the right direction.
As we all know the first Halo game that was released by Bungie was called Halo: Combat Evolved. This saw us step into the shoes of the Master Chief for the very first time, and for those that were patient enough to see the entire openening sequence you would have caught the very first glimpse of the planet Reach.
So, I hear you all cry, what does all of this have to do with a Halo movie?
As I recall every other attempt to turn a computer game into a film has been a complete disaster. Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Farcry were all vague and desperate attempts to rake in cash but they all had something in common, besides being rubbish in movie form, they all had very thin storylines. Halo, however, is an exception.
Halo has one of the most in depth storylines of any game, even Gears of War isn't as powerful and that has a decent story to boot. Halo soars far above any of its rivals in this respect which obviously makes it a valuable target for those that wish to turn the First Person Shooter into a cinematic event. But before any of that can happen we all have to be familiar with the story.
While most of us know the basics of the story from the Halo trilogy and an awareness of other Spartans besides the Chief (Halo Wars/Books), the vast majority of casual gamers only know the basics to the Halo storyline. This means that Bungie have to do their part in educating the populace, or the majority that could send the sales through the roof.
I know that all three Halo games involving the Chief have been more successful than anyone could have dreamed of anyway but if you add more and more people to the picture then that means more profit. If you inform all of these on the storyline then that will also mean a greater understanding, and a greater understanding will draw more and more people back when a sequel comes out.
So where does Halo: Reach fit into this?
Although most of us started the Halo journey in CE the true begining of the Halo story begins with the emergence of the Spartans as key characters, and the bulk of this birth begins with the events on Reach.
Reach is where all of the Spartan II's were trained. It's where Dr Catherine Halsey did most of her research and it's where Cortana was created. Reach was also one of the largest military colonies of the UNSC and a major staging post for the vast fleets that reside there. So, although most are familiar with the Halo story we all need to be shown how it all began before we can enjoy the spectacle of seeing it in the cinema.
Along with Halo: Reach we have a number of other steps:
1. The obvious trilogy gives us the Master Chief - the protagoninst.
2. Halo Wars reminds us that there are other Spartans.
3. The novels provide us with detailed background information and a firm foundation on which to write a movie script.
4. The Halo short films gave Bungie and anyone else a chance to see the product in the flesh.
5. District 5 provides a a key directer with experience - with advice and guidance from Peter Jackson.
Just look at the evidence and you will begin to see a pattern.
