ACTA NON VERBA

Is there a reason that the brutes in ODST have energy shields like the elites instead of the normal power armor they had in halo 3? They seem to behave the same way, but did bungie give us a reason what the ascetic change was for?

They have shields in regular Halo 3 as well, but you cannot see them as well. Likely it was just upgraded as an indicator of their shield status.

Wielding a double-bladed chainsaw, wearing a potato sack on your head and spinning around mindlessly is amiably quick at getting anything done

I noticed that too and thought the same thing.

The Mythic Threads (Halo 3) (ODST) (Reach)

Their "Shields" is called Power Armor, just as the OP said. In Halo 3: ODST, their armor behave like energy shields when you shoot them. No idea why.

NO GROUP INVITES!!!

Brutes always had Energy Shields in Halo 3 but the shield flare effect wasn't present. You do see how the lights in the Power Armor start brightening until the shield overloard and the armor falls apart. The shield does regenerate as long as the shield hasn't been overloaded, the lights go dimmer if you wait...

In ODST, shield flare was added, for unknown reason. Maybe it was bugged in Halo 3, maybe they wanted Brutes to be more like Elites who aren't present in ODST.
