Thats horridly ill-advised though, first off youd have to crank up the gravity field to ridiculous levels, possibly even damaging the equipment, 2ndly, even if you could, youd be sucking all the debris into your hanger. the gravity lift isnt a weapon by any means. why take the time to tear it apart when they can just slag it?? much less effort
G-Lifts can move stuff both directions at same time... and i think the Covenant didn't dare to use Energy Projector (the weapon goes straight through any human ship) to destroy Delta Halo temple because the could have damaged the ring itself. In Halo: The Flood, a Prophet denies the Elite Fleet Master to fire at POA so close to Alpha Halo, he feared the ring might be damaged.
Also, the temple may have had some shield against energy weapons... Grav Lift isn't weapon directly so the shield wouldn't activate or wouldn't stop the Lift. But this is just speculation, let's stay on topic ok?
Easiest explanation to the molten area seen is that The Covenant were digging something there, maybe they thought the Portal was right there? We know its closer to Voi actually but Regret was in hurry *chuckle* I mean the human fleet versus single Assault Carrier, very bad odds for Regret
EDIT and why is it Gravity Lift? Look at the bottom of Assault Carrier and CCS-Battlecruiser, both have an ring-like shape.... and that's where the Gravity Lift is. Look at the cutscene in Halo 2 where the temple is destroyed, the Gravity lift comes right from the ring... Energy Projector is not in same place naturally.
