Subject: Expanding the Covenant?

Right now, all of us have an understanding of what races were in the Covenant during the Reach Campaign. However, do any of you think new races could be added into the mix?

I mean, as much as I would love something like that, it may seem a bit contrived should they add something new.

Doubtful. It's been fairly established what factions and species are fighting for the Covenant. Adding a new species would throw the story off somewhat.

it could be a race that got shamed during the battle of reach, and they all drank the cool-aid

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

A Covenant Campaign and larger arsenal for separate Covenant species (Needle Knives for Jackals, new pronounced Brute weaponry, define a separation in the technologies between Elites and Brutes) would be great. But no NEW species.

As far as we know though, Brutes were not involved in the Battle of Reach. But I guess thats what this game is about.

In the books they don't talk about new species during the battle of Reach so it would probably throw the story off.

I think that the number of Covenant species (+humans) reflects the number of "wings" on the Ark (one wing for each species homeworld), so I doubt we could see any new species.

I like my Covenant like i like my woman, screamin and with a sticky on there face.

Brutes weren't in the halo storyline when reach fell and if there in the game im going to slap someone ;) But the only other species that isnt in any of the games is the little engineer things they have.

Why couldn't they be at Reach? They were members of the Covenant since before they first encountered humans, they could have been at Reach. They didn't join right before Halo 2.

IDK, could be just a little Bungie thing, but looking at it from the actual story, I remember seeing somewhere that the Forerunners didn't know about Covenant species or didn't favor them like humans, so why would they include them into their architecture?

Brutes where present before Halo CE, the practical reason they weren't in CE is because Bungie hadn't thought of them yet, but story-wise the fleet that followed the Pillar of Autumn was Elite commanded, not Brute.

I disagree about the Ark, otherwise the Habitats from one wing to the other would be far more different than it looks.

+ there are 9 species, not 8. I think your forgetting about the Huragok.

Well the Forerunner indexed all species which exist in the galaxy at present, humans were just some of the last ones. Its possible (and likely, IMO) that they had another sentient race sec up as the "Reclaimers" but revoked their status and gave it to the humans when they proved more similar to the Forerunner.

What about Halo Wars?

An opinion should be the result of thought, not a substitute for it.
- Jef Mallett

The Brutes were the first ones to land on Harvest, according to the book Contact Harvest, but they truly weren't created until Halo 2. Since Reach will most likely take place before Halo CE, I don't think Brutes will be involved too much. I'm sure they'll make an appearance, but I doubt they'll be a major enemy in the game like they were in Halo 2 or 3.

As for the OP, I don't think there'll be any new races. It'd require a lot of work to try and cram a new species into an already well-developed universe.

Well the Engineers are not biological species, so they would have had no need to have been indexed (the Halos do not effect machines, and they are made of nanobots). The Prophets simply found them in Forerunner facilities and used them as tools.

But if I'm right about the 8 biological races in the Haloverse each having had one of the "wings" on the Ark, its possible that there is one more Covenant race (Sharquoi?) since the humans were discovered after the Ark was built, so the 8 wings may already have been in place for 8 species already found, and then humans could have resided in the center circle... mating with the Forerunner?)

Thats pretty much what I feel. It may be a bit too contrived. And Brutes could very well appear even though they were not mentioned till After the destruction of Halo CE. Like, Rifleman Joe pointed out, they were the first aliens to ever land on a Human Planet and try to establish contact. They could have been involved somewhere in Reach. Just that that part hasn't been covered yet.

Edit: And yes. There is one other Covenant Species mentioned: The Sharquoi. We still have no idea what it is. Nevertheless, there is still room for this to appear. Somewhere.

I really dont think that would be a good idea. The Covenant is nice and rounded and the Drinol would make the Covenant seem like thick planks of wood that harvest animals for war.

  • 08.04.2009 4:32 AM PDT

I wish I was still legendary.

If a Drinol/Sharquoi was it there, it would have to be VERY well implemented and thought out. As to why they'd use a living, vulnerable creature as a vehicle/building killer rather than something tough like a locust, I have no idea...

more pronounced differences between species would be good though. Brutes that actually looked BRUTAL, in terms of armour and weaponry. Hunters where the worms actually moved. Elites that actually look dangerous and not like constantly smiling hunchback, split-lip lizards like in Halo 3.

Grunts with armour that actually looks plated on more, that sound more like how they were described in the books. They'd shuffle around and make a few less funny comments, with a slightly deeper pitch. They would be seen in situations OUTSIDE of standing behind an elite for no reason - maybe pre-defined animations for certain areas, like a grunt carrying a motion scanner or a couple scouting through some trees on their own.

Jackals that are actually scary, and somehow reflect their mercenary heritage - maybe they could have a belt or bandolier with grenades or an energy garrotte on it. I'm reasonably sure that as mercenaries, they must have weapons OTHER than the covenant plasma pistols and needlers as well...

Prophets that looked more sinister then they currently do, but still regal - for example, Truth didn't look evil as such in Halo 3. He just looked like another alien. they could have gaunter faces or something, I don't really know.

Drones that act like a proper hive mind rather then independent creatures, and have armour of sorts that looks more like natural plating - the shield generator thingies would have cracks and stuff around them, to look like they were placed into the armour by force.

Just ideas, probably not the best ones.

"Take my advice. Rookie. You ever fall for a woman?

...Make sure she's got balls."

To llamalizard, those are all GREAT ideas and i hope they are looked at by Bungie and are implemented into the game. I would love to see a more serious Halo game.

  • 08.04.2009 5:07 AM PDT

Actually one species that could atleast get shown is the engineers or whatever there called seriously cant remember the purple things that float on sacks and fix stuff if this game is going to be tied to the book which had them in then this would be a chance for the player to see one and for an expansion of there background
