Ok,

I bet this is not the first time this argument has gone around here on the forums. But I think it is important to note a serious issue at hand. I believe this relates to the substance and expectations of games in the future.

In one sentence, Halo ODST cost too much. I do not know who priced it, probably Microsoft by the looks of it, but it is ridiculous and I think its an insult. I do not think I am the only one who remembers when new games used to bring in new features and content.

To organize my argument, I am listing every feature that Halo ODST has.

1) New "exciting" and "Different" campaign, takes place in new Mombasa, you play as an ODST, who is essentially a weak spartan (no shields, less health, cant jump as high stuff like that),

2) Firefight cooperative game mode. A New Multiplayer mode.

3) 2 new weapons

4) Halo Reach Beta access key

5) 3 new maps for Halo 3

Now I have to contend with the people who think this is not an expansion. To address the campaign, Bungie has stated the campaign is shorter than Halo 3's campaign. I thought Halo 3's campaign was short. I also Thought the campaign for Halo ODST would be one of its coolest features. I am dissappointed to hear this.

As for Firefight, yes it is cool, yes it is new and original, but it is a mode. It is not a new multiplayer. Some people give the impression that Firefight is a whole new multiplayer experience. it is not, it is a new game mode just like Capture the flag or territories, with different maps. So far I believe Firefight is the only substantial addition in this expansion.

Thirdly, the game lacks in substance as before mentioned. The campaign is short, there are only two new weapons, one of which is the SMG which we already have, they just added a silencer. You are being sold Halo 3's multiplayer again because you need those 3 new maps to be able to play online if you want to have fun. It is an expansion, it has nothing to do with quality of the game, I am sure it will be good, but It does not have enough to warrant a full price tag like this.

As a quick note, The Halo Reach access key should be free, like it is with other games. So when I see posts saying it is worth 10 bucks, please give it a rest.

To conclude I am not writing this post to commence a flame war of sorts, I simply want to address this in a orderly fashion and get some answers/explanations. This game is an expansion which I would gladly buy, but now they they are charging me for a game that lacks so much.

And another thing, why would you buy this game now, it is going to have no long term value, halo Reach comes out in Fall 2010, so ODST will be obsolete in just over a year, while halo 3's multiplayer has had us for 2-3 years, and they have the same price now?

And before anyone says that I am one of those cheap ass people, please don't post here. Some of us do not always have disposable income for constant micropayments from credit cards or 60 dollars to throw away all the time, some of us are strapped for cash especially in times like these. There used to be a day where you would spend 60 bucks for a full, new game that would be playable for 2-3 years. Look at COD4 and Halo 3.

Ive got nothing personal with Bungie, but I just think this is extortion and if we accept this without a voice of concern from the community even if that voice is useless in achieving anything, then game companies will get used to selling us less for more.

What say you?

Firfight actually comes with;

1.) Sgt Johnson when pre-ordered.

2) New "exciting" and "Different" campaign, takes place in new Mombasa, you play as an ODST, who is essentially an extremely skilled soldier with updated gadgets and level-interaction.

2) Firefight cooperative game mode. A New Multiplayer mode.

3) 2 New weapons confiirmed so far.

4) Halo Reach Beta access key.

5) 3 new maps for Halo 3 + The Legendary Maps ($10) and The Mythic Map-1($10)
So 3 map packs for ($30) of the $60.
Hmm. Yes.
$30 for a 5 hour game, Halo 3 multiplayer, a new multiplayer experience on Firefight, Halo: Reach BETA acess and cool new gadgets.

Totally unfair.

....Dip-blam!-.

ok, so we are paying for the map packs again? most of us have already payed for the legendary and mythic map packs, those are different products for a different game.

Cool New gadgets? SGT johnson? These are minor additions dude.

You are practically defending the position of paying for Halo 3 multiplayer again.

GETCHAPOPCORNREADY

yeah i totally agree with this thread. but i'm still gonna buy it. having a high price doesnt mean its not going to be a great game, but i wish there was a purchasable version without the halo 3 multiplayer disc and cheaper. maybe $40? $30? idk. or maybe a way to somehow get money back for having the mack packs already? that really ticked me off. especialy my friend whom i just convinced to buy the map packs and then all of a sudden they're coming with something new he's already getting.

In Soviet Russia, Xbox plays you.

First of all, Your forgetting ODST's Campaign contains a big free-roaming environment. Bungie was only speaking from the prospective of if you go straight to each flashback without exploring the city. Bakken did mention there would be 'side mission's' in ODST as well. These will add more gameplay time etc. You've got a big city to explore, with collectables tied in with achievements and easter egg's to find. So that adds tons more gameplay.

If Firefight is as addicting as Horde, Zombies in CoD or Left4Dead then that too will add tons more fun.

I can agree with you about buying the same maps we bought as DLC but it's to sweeten the deal for newcomers into the game. Plus with Halo 3 still being played by millions I doubt that'll really get old.

If your so insulted by the price then simply don't buy the game,

I stopped reading after the list.

If it's too much, sell your copy of Halo 3 to get ODST (second disc has full Halo 3 Multiplayer) for cheaper. It's not a big deal.

Sorry, I can't hear them over the sounds of Modern Warfare 3 on my Turtle Beaches.

That's Micro$oft for ya.

I don't mind ODST's price, I have to pay $89.99 for my Collector's Edition.

What I don't like about Microsoft is the fact that you have to pay 800 MS Points to change your gamertag.

I'm starting to dislike my gt, AudaciousZealot.

I don't have the mythic map pack, so theres 10$. The new map pack, 10# firefight I'd say is worth at least 15, so is a new campaign. 50 $ so far. Considering I dont own halo 3 anymore I'd pay 10$ for the multi. 60$ to me is fair, and I'd gladly pay more. But don't raise the price. lol

There are so many of these threads and it simply has to be that price for all of the expences....marketing,developement,...and so on they need to make money for something they worked very hard for. If you cant afford it just save up...it aint like the game is going to dissappear. Also with the amount of (new) content is available I would say it is very well worth the money...its just another countless hours of fun gaming. Id say that Halo reach beta would be as good as odst or maybe even better so thats an even more of a reason to pay 59.99.You should be thankful that the price is not 69.99....that would be fun wouldnt it. So everyone that reads this just sit back for a moment and think Bungie are a big hard working family and we should just live with wht thay give us because by posting about how much the game costs isnt going to change anything.

  • 07.31.2009 11:31 AM PDT

theres open map witch you could explore for a very long time at least 5 hours of gameplay and firefight all the maps for halo 3 multiplayer reach this is one of the coolest games ive seen anyone who says its not worth 60 dollars is a retard

  • 07.31.2009 11:40 AM PDT

I think it is completely reasonable,
I'd pay:
-new campaign = $20
-firefight = $10

that's $30 dollars right there, then Bungie added all the maps so far:

-new maps = $10
-mythic maps = $10
-legendary maps = $8

which is $58

then there's the beta invite which although it is free, but the only way to get it is to buy the game, so I'm definitely willing to pay for it.

Any way if you don't want to buy it you can always rent it.

  • 07.31.2009 11:50 AM PDT

1. It's a full game, ive spent $60 bucks for many games that don't nearly have the same amount of content as ODST

2. the campaign is a little shorter than halo 3's, so what?... halo 3 was a lot shorter than halo 2, at least ODST isn't a lot shorter than halo 3.

3. don't want to spend it, don't buy it

4. it's not going to change

5. get over it.

sorry, but there are far to many of these topics, and i'm getting sick of repeating myself.

  • 07.31.2009 11:54 AM PDT

I totally agree with you but that is why I'm not going to buy it as soon as it comes out I'm going to wait for the price to drop and get it at christmas. I've waited nearly a year already for this game what's a couple more months.

  • 07.31.2009 11:55 AM PDT

The fight has been complete.... now get the cookies!

While we certainly share your enthusiasm for the return, we here at the Bungie.net community are mostly made up of snarky asses and jerks who will ridicule you for making a thread about something revealed months ago. We regret that your innocent intentions will almost certainly be replied with anger and sarcasm, and politely invite you to don your Flame-suit, because you just did the internet equivalent of jumping up the Construct lifts.

Or we could pay to have an awesome time playing a new and kick ass game. All of you who argue with the price obviously dont like Halo. Or atleast enough, so leave.

  • 07.31.2009 11:57 AM PDT

yeah it is priced too high but that's not Bungie's fault it's microsoft's fault.......cause they're evil

  • 07.31.2009 11:58 AM PDT

I completely agree with the OP. The pricing is wat too high for an expansion. Now I already pre ordered it because it's a Halo game. But that is exactly the reason why ODST costs so much. A lot of Halo fans will buy a Halo game even if it's at a ridiculous price, and smile and say, thank you for making pay more money than ussual, but it's still Halo! Thank you Microsoft!

I am a fan of Halo, but I know when I am being ripped off. I paid for ALL of the maps (except for the ones coming out for ODST) at full price. It isn't fair that they are counting the maps into the price and are making people like me who already paid for them to pay for them again!

It may be a good deal for the people who don't have the maps, but a lot of us have bought the maps, and it's not fair to us.
