Well the topic is a little misleading, because i can tell from reading the books that the colors mean something, but can someone give me a run down of what they all mean? Ya know i noticed when playing the game that there were a variety of colors on the covenant but i just thought that was for diversity. Do they actually play differently in the game (i imagine they do, but i didn't notice.)

Blue- Rookie

Red- Veteran, better shields, better tactics

Gold- Captain, best armor and shielding, carry energy shields, good tactics

Black- Special Ops, good shields and armor (not as good as gold) and they through grenades. Best tactics.

There don't seem to be many red grunts, compared to the orange ones. If this is true, as Cov wkiller says, that red grunts are veterans, then it makes sense. I'd say few grunts live through one battle, thus the low number of veterans.

Opinions are like arseholes - everybody has one.

Knowledge is knowing Tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

There is no such thing as a bad decision, only good decisions based on flawed information.

Has any of you read the book First Strike? It mentions a white armoured grunt, and there's been a picture of a white elite. What's your take on that. I reckon they could be the Prophets Elite Gaurds or something, the best of the best. Bring them on!

You dont play on legendary much do you... if you did youd notice the difference because you have to change your tactics depending on how many and what type of elites there are. For instance 1 red and 2 blues make you think about what youre gonna do a little bit more than just 3 blues.

Also someone forgot to mention that no other elite carry swords other than Gold. And that SkyBlue elites are invis.. i suspect they are part of spec ops but im not sure

Actually, the SkyBlue invisible elites also carry swords. And Halo2Facter, you obviously didn't read the books or play Halo regularly. The yellow/gold elites are the commanders, not the black ones. The Black ones are Spec Ops forces, and as you notice in the Maw, several are together at the same time, while the Gold ones are always alone. Therefore, commanders.

In halo 2 all elites are capable of carrying plasma swords.
